Hi, I have made a total of three upgrades from Gutsy to Hardy heron on three different Laptops (all using SCIM to type Vietnamese, installed through the hanoilug-desktop package).
On one Laptop, Upgrading with Alternate went fine although I had to perform a "dpkg-reconfigure --all" at the end of the upgrading as I had an information that the upgrading went wrong and that the system might be unstable and unusable and that I may have to run the dpkg command as above. Running the command was lenghty but in the end I had a perfectly working system upgraded to hardy heron with SCIM (Vietnamese input) working in OpenOffice.org 2.4. On two other laptops, upgrading with the Alternate CD was quite problematic and has to be made through several passes. In the end, upgrading was successful on one laptop, but is stucked on the other one. SCIM input method however was no more by default : when you had logged on the system you could not see the SCIM keyboard icon on the bar as usual. Lauching gedit, you had to do a right-click to choose the input method and then "system" was the default. Choosing "scim" or "scim-bridge" make possible inputting Vietnamese with Gedit. But as soon as Gedit was closed, so did the Scim keyboard icon. I tried verifying the content of ".scim/config" and of "/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim" but they seems to be not very different. For the last case, in the Hardy file I saw: "XIM=SCIM XIM_PROGRAM=/usr/bin/scim XIM_ARGS="-d" XIM_PROGRAM_SETS_ITSELF_AS_DAEMON=yes GTK_IM_MODULE="scim" QT_IM_MODULE="scim" DEPENDS="scim,scim-anthy|scim-canna|scim-chewing|scim-pinyin|scim-hangle|scim-prime|scim-skk|scim-tables-additional|scim-m17n|scim-uim|scim-tables-ja|scim-tables-ko|scim-tables-zh" I tried replacing "scim" by xim in lines GTK_IM and QT_IM and also commenting XIM_PROGRAM..., to get the file with the same content as in the Gutsy file, and restarted Xserver but without success : i.e. I don't have the SCIM keyboard icon on the navigation bar and the default input method is "system" in Gedit (you have to manually choose scim to be able to type in Vietnamese). But as you cannot right-click and choose the input method in Firefox and OpenOffice.org, it means that typing Vietnamese in these two programs is not yet possible. I'm going to check the content of the above two files with the third laptop which works by default with scim this evening after coming back home. I believe the problem is to be solved elsewhere i.e. how to get the scim input method by default instead of system or something else. If someone has clues on what to do... -- M.
