Well, on my side, when I was studient too, the server was in some bunker (data center) in the USA (and I was in France, I never saw it in fact), and I had the "NOC Monkey" 911 number too... Just to tell him "please reboot using the "oldlinux" Lilo choice" (there was no grub at that time)...
I almost never had to call him, even when I installed a new Red Hat version fully remotly (and Red Hat was really not helping on that, I had to do every installer steps by hand) but still there were some case I had too...
