If you know please help me! I'm sorry, but I have not much experience with xvnkb. I tried it once, an old version, and it was not working quite well. I heard about it running almost perfectly now. But in the meantime I've just switch (from x-unikey) to SCIM, which the default and recommended input method in Ubuntu, and now I'm happy with this software that allow me to type in any language (my needs: French, Vietnamese and Japanese). There is a few xvnkb specialists on this list though...

In fact, I'm the author of this tool... :-P It can surely convert from TCVN 5712-3 because it was my main need here in Hano?. But I also wrote a VNI to Unicode conversion library so it's also able to convert from VNI fonts used in South Vietnam. About BK HCM2, I can't answer now because I don't know what exactly is this encoding. Do you have some reference (technical specification) about it? And could you send me some sample file to convert? Well, almost since in OpenOffice.org the "?" [SMALL U WITH HORN] in TCVN 5712-3 is at the [SOFT HYPHEN] position, which make it *not* editable... And you *will*, for sure, meet problems latter in websites and probably other applications because those .vn* fonts are technically considered as western fonts... About being able to type using .vn* fonts, you have to understand a few things: - typing for .vn* fonts require the use of a typing tool able to output characters in the TCVN 5712-1 encoding (x-unikey and xvnkb should be able to do so) ; - the TCVN 5712-3 encoding must *not* be used anymore, since the apparition of the TCVN 6909:2001 encoding (Unicode standard for Vietnam), put in application from 1st of January 2003 by decree 72/2002/Q?-TTg and others from other ministries after that ; - SCIM outputs *only* in Unicode and that's what we expect an input method to do on modern operating systems: use Unicode as much as possible since it's the only standard available on every computers around the World (well... at least it's the goal since the start of Unicode in 1991, and we are not so far from it now). Yes, I know that there still is a lot of Vietnamese people not using Unicode, but they are just doing wrong by not complying such a good government's technical decision (because Unicode is really a *must* for the future, oh well, present now). And worse than that, by doing so they are slowing down the country technological evolution... Using Unicode, your document will be read the same way in North, Center, South Vietnam, as well as in any country abroad without the need of specific font being installed. This is because every Unicode supporting system do have Unicode fonts already installed by default and, in most case now, they do contain Vietnamese characters too. -- Jean Christophe "????"
