Hi, Thank you all for such positive response for working towards improving Linux accessibility.
Right now we are trying to address the problem Vietnamese blind screenreader users. If you are interested work in working with other forms of disabilities please let me know. Let me write down few points to discuss in Saturday morning meeting in Hanoi. To get started please lets use espeak [1] Vietnamese language data, Jonathan Duddington <[email protected]> is very interested in working with this language. I am not a native speaker and have no knowledge of working with language data. It is essential we have good support for Vietnamese as both Orca [2] and NVDA [3] uses espeak (along with other TTS systems). How good is espeak vn-test speech data? What needs to be done to improve it ? Are there any alternative TTS systems that provide better support ? N V D A Portable --------------- NVDA is GPL screen reader that works on Windows Operating system. You download [4] the NVDA portable and install it on to USB drive. A blind person can walk into a Cybercenter or use a computer at work with windows. He/she plugin in the usb drive and start using any windows computer with a portable screen reader. Do document the steps to create a NVDA portable usb disk, beginners guide to NVDA portable and shortcuts keys in English and Vietnamese. [Flame bait: Why not promote the use of Linux LiveUSB instead of NVDA] Remastering Ubuntu ------------------ We can customise the Ubuntu Desktop CD to start with screen reader mode.vinux [5] already does this. You can work with vinux image or the standard Ubuntu LTS image. The idea is make a full desktop accessible with orca with vietnamese TTS. Documentation -------------- I have written some of the Orca Documentation man pages, cheat sheets and started writing Orca training manual. If possible try to translate some of the documentation into Vietnamese or help us conduct the workshops and training camps. Documentation and local community support are the key to successful adoption of Orca and NVDA screen readers. Last but not least if you are a developer or someone who wants to be one. You can work with a11y teams to find and fix bugs in gnome applications and NVDA.
