Subversion definitely has permission on committing; in fact on the server-side it has more control over permissioning than git does. Well, Git doesn't really have a "server-side" anyway, since everyone has an independent repository. As you noticed, I'm rewriting Chapter 3 to bring it up-to-date. A lot has changed in 5 years! The two main changes are: - To recommend Git as a default choice, with Subversion or Mercurial as the next obvious choice. - To recommend that people use "canned hosting" rather than assembling their own project hosting solution. 5 years ago, it made sense to build one's own hosting site, but for most projects that no longer makes sense. I appreciate any comments or ideas you all have on the changes to this chapter. I will continue committing there over the next week or two.
