thanks for your response. I shall gladly give a little more background information. We are currently in the process of setting up a new work group of animal breeders whos modern set of tools are derived from statistics and implemented in IT. Many open source tools have been developed and form the basis of the IT infrastructure. To be able to really handle these applications (statistics, data management etc) they will have to get into programming. Perl has been chosen because many of the subsystems to be used are written in Perl, so it simply makes sense to also use it for general script (Python would also be an option, but with much of the software being written in Perl, going for the latter is simply wise). So, what we have here is a bunch of excited folks that really want to get into it but have no clue about a real ;) OS, thus need to start with basic classes in - Linux - Perl - Database management (Postgresql) - R why R? well, its well suited for the statistical analyses to be done. Alterntives are SAS (not exactly free and opensource) I thaught that you people may be able to help identify class option for the areas listed above. many regards (meanwhile back in Germany) Eildert _______________________________________________ POST RULES : http://wiki.hanoilug.org/hanoilug:mailing_list_guidelines _______________________________________________ HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/
