I would recommend that you check out the architecture guide, which
offers a large number of examples on different types of configuration:

http://haproxy.1wt.eu/download/1.3/doc/architecture.txt

It's perhaps not availabled for the most recent version (1.4), but it
should give you some good ideas.

Many on the list aren't so so hot on virtualised environments, notably
Willy, HAProxy's main author, but it should work well enough for
moderate traffic volumes.
