I think what he wants is to be able to have persistence for clients, but
be able to 'reset' their affiliation to a backend, when he has no
control over the client. He's currently maintaining sessions via cookies
but...

Would I be foolish to suggest that if you want control over this, stick
tables would be the way forward?
