Uhrm, I'm not sure how this is possible. What was the load average before the upgrade exactly? Please post the first 5 lines of top with the new kernel. Also, if you can boot the old kernel once, let it run for a few minutes and post a complete top from old and the new kernel, that would probably give as a better idea of what exactly the difference is.
