To answer your exact question: absolutely no changes to the config file on disk will be picked up by the HAProxy process(es) without you first restarting/reloading the process. NB Do note that that doesn't answer the wider question about making changes to a running process' *idea* of what its configuration should be. That can be done in a variety of ways, but not via the config file itself. I'm not best placed to help you with that, however. Jonathan
