William and I had a discussion about it a few days ago and where hesitant,
remembering there are some downsides to this but not remembering exactly
which ones. However it's certain that it's a pain for a number of
environments and I suspect that it's easier to address manually for those
with a specific use case than for thoes who expect it to just work.

What I'm proposing is to take it as it for 2.2 and that we observe if
anyone starts to complain. Then we'll see how to address this (revert,
better doc etc). If after some time users seem happier with this than
the previous options, then we could consider backporting it.
