I'd rather think that users have their own customized version
of old bld*.cmd and it's the reason why it was not tested so far.

Ups. Sorry I forgot to answer to your question earlier.
It's not very important but OpenWatcom does not cover all
platforms supported by Watcom. So keeping some pure Watcom C
make files may help people who will want to make such ports.
Anyhow there is a long time as I was making real Watcom C builds
so I cannot say if we do not have some extensions which will not
work with this compiler. AFAIR Ryszard also was using it and
he asked me to keep watcom.cf and add owatcom.cf with new switches/
extensions for OpenWatcom builds.
