Authors do, plus you never know who else does, I seek this information
a lot of times, since it can give a lot of information about what to expect
about a contribution. [ How would you think Linus Torvalds could decide
about a submitted kernel patch without knowing who submitted it? ]

Copyright is there, yes, but after all these years we all know that many
files have changed completely since their original author initially
submitted
it into the source tree.

F.e. I do lots of, lots of code cleanups and fixing, none of these makes
me a Copyright holder, yet it's tons of (I hope valuable) work and
contributes
to the final quality / state of the software. Do you think this work is
nothing
and should be hidden? Or even more: Do you think it's fair for someone
else to attribute these changes as his own?

There is: Respect, correctness and attention to other developers and their
work.

Viktor
