It makes very strange to look at messages where you have no clue who
posted them. It's not even possible most of the time to tell who is
asking
and who is answering
I can turn this feature on and off. It's off to keep spammers from
trolling our archives and getting all of the email addresses so they
can have new spamming potential.
It's a simple change if we want to expose ourselves to such.
If you believe that users will do better in a forum for less
investment, then I'm ok with it. Just enter with the expectation
that it will be compromised and it will need to be dumped and
rebuilt from backups once in a while.
If the spammers would simply vanish, this would be a much easier
solution and I would be much easier on it. But reality is that it
will get broken. Unfortunate but likely.
Okay, but IMO current setting makes it very difficult to
follow anything there, or to find any pleasure to read
the content. IMO this is too high price to pay for
SPAM protection. Anyhow I'm aware of this concern and that's
also one of the reasons mailing list is less "secure"
than forums for user, where mail address is fully hidden,
but you can still see the name. For development this
price may be worth it on the long run (f.e. I opened a
numbered e-mail box just for this purpose), but not so
much for occasional users, not so much.
I'm not going to stand in the way and your reasoning seems solid.
But I would like for the developers list to stay on email since it
has momentum here. There are hundreds of people reading this list.
For developers list IMO mailing list is by far the best
medium, I had no intention to suggest otherwise. There
are different dynamics with developers than users.
In fact I honestly dislike our gmane/nabble/mail-archive/etc
interfaces for it which just helps to make more easily
accessible for *everyone*, which IMO has not much point,
and which in practice makes us much better prone to SPAM,
and much harder to find information via google.
IMO we should choose *one* web interface and turn off
the rest. We should probably leave nabble, or simply
redirect everyone to our official one. What everyone
thinks of this?

Viktor
