googling for "OpenSSL 1.0.0 betas break SSL_SESSION_cmp" I've found:

The idea of this was to avoid various types of casting. The best
solution is to update code to use the lh_SSL_SESSION_*() API, that
should work with both 0.9.8 and 1.0.

Thank you. Unfortunately I can find no reference to
these lh_* versions in 0.9.8, plus it wouldn't solve
all problems, so I guess only the ugly way remains to
fix it (branching by lib version).
