Downlad a Cdrom from Ubuntu with the last version 9.10 and install it

try to download alternate CD version ( is a text mode version , with more
options at the moment of install )

Do you have separated / ( root ) and /home partitions ?

If you have , only format / ( root) partition to save your home data

in this way you can have an operating linu box quiqly and without lost any
of your data
