Paul I have had zero problems with Sony's brands. I currently use E-12 models, but in the past have used the JB-940, JB-930 and JB-920 models. The E12/940/930 have the advantange of 4x long extended play (2x the usual mono times) plus the ability to use a standard PC keyboard to enter the names of discs and titles of the tracks. The E12 has the advantage of rack mounting (1 U high) plus an RS232 port. By the way, both the RS-232 port and the keyboard allow you to start/stop/etc the MD without using the front panel. For those of you that may be considering the cheaper E10 model, it lacks a number of key features such as time/date stamp that are so useful for DX recording.
Another alternative you may consider is recording directly to your PC disc using one of the many software programs plus your sound card. One program a lot of us use here on the WCNA is total recorder (do a search for total recorder using a search engine and it will turn it up - a relatively cheap license, not free/share ware.
