Heard on the Mazda Protg`s car radio of my father while driving from
Hochelaga-Maisonneuve to Pierrefonds (after staying 8 hours with a friend on the
Mont-Royal mountain I was boored so I asked my father if we could check out if in
Hochelaga-Maisonneuve we can get CFXM M105 in Grandby without CJLA Radio Fusion QRM).
First sign of probable Es was hearing techno music on 104.9 mixing with CFXM mostly
and a little bit of CJLA, then there were three stations on 101.1 - one of them had
one ad wich sayed "America`s ? store" and the only tropo-catter signal on 101.1 is
from Ottawa, so I had immediately the certitude it was skip.

At home in the parking lot, I found evidence of a lot of tropo mixing with the Es
activity as well. Only one new logging though.

Any help with the unIDs would be extremely appreciated.

Into the logs now:

89.9 unID jazz station mixing with CHIT (tropo)

91.9 CJEC "Rythme FM", Quebec City, QC test program with "Changer" from the musical
comedy Don Juan, followed by a contest of "guess wich artist will play first when the
official programming will begun". Bruno Pelletier was one of them. Very weak signal,
but easily readable at times. The weak Plattsburg, NY semi-local was nearly
non-existent at the time (2110 EDT). New !

92.1 CJDM, Drummondville, QC

93.1 legal ID (sounded like WEJO) with mention with mention of Augusta. Can`t find any
Augusta station on this channel.

93.3 CJMF FM 93, excellent at times !

93.7 unID on tropo - 10 minutes after the skip ended heard here "Don`t Speak" by No
Doubt. It`s not the first time I hear this (it`s in the Tropo-Scatter area I think),
but the weak signal and the local CBMX splatter makes this one very tough to stay
with. Also heard the 1983 dance-pop hit "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama here in June
followed by a proffessionnal ID announcement wich I don`t remember anymore. This one
need some work on it !

94.7 CHEY Rock Dtente, Trois-Rivires, QC completly overtaked WYUL and with a very,
very strong signal with "Les Grands Slows en supersuite la Radio Rock Dtente du
Qubec" jingle heard after the Francis Cabrel hit "C`est crit", around 2115 EDT. This
one is a semi-local in the north-eastern part of the Montreal Island, but hard to get
here (impossible during normal conditions) due to semi-local WYUL Hits FM

96.3 WKSP Augusta or WJIZ Albanywith rap and hip-hop music ?

97.3 WAEV, Savannah, GA - legal ID at 2059 EDT with mention of "100,000 watts" and
super-power hits or something like that; Excellent, my father was completly amazed
when he heard mention of Savannah on the car radio. New ! Also, New state for me on
FM, altough I don`t keep an FM logbook anymore, sadly.

97.3 unID ?? over / under WAEV with hard-core dance music including a sample of "The
Party Has Just Begun" by Freestyle heard in a R&B medley. Who can this be ? It`s the
first time I hear a dance music station via Es... the single-hop targets don`t have
that bad programming (

98.1 CHOI "Radio X" very strong signal with minor to moderate back-ground hash from
co-channel Es signal (s). Heard sports news followed by the familiar spots "Tous les
ans .(?).. l`t on ferme sa gueule et on met du rock" and "To, est-tu un Radio X ?".

99.1 unID w/ soft-rock music mixing with a second station

101.1 unID ?? public radio with mentions of California (double-hop Es ?) mixing with
an unID oldies station (tropo to WCBS-FM in NYC ?)

102.1 CFEL, Montmagny, QC - presumed with Adult Contemporary Quebec pops. Weak-poor
and fading. This one would have been a new one here.

102.9 CFOM, Quebec City, QC - tentative wih FF oldies at 2128 EDT.

104.3 unID

104.9 unID modern techno-dance music mixing with CFXM and CJLA in downtown Montreal !

106.3 CBV, Quebec City, QC

106.9 CKQB "The Bear", Ottawa, ON - tropo-scatter signal heard on the Sangean 606
telescopic whip in Montreal-Est !

107.7 unID weak with ads; weak and very instable. This is the highest frequency where
I got Es up-to-date. I wonder what aeronautical band Es sounds like. Since the
transmissions are in AM, the fading sound should be more similar to mediumwave DX, is
it ?

The FM skip lasted for well over 30 minutes wich make me wonder if the very beginning
of September will still produce some late season openings. It`s at least the fourth
time I get FM skip this season (with my limited equipment and relatively little
activity this is quite surprising), the first time in August and it`s a strong one !
Tomorrow, the Perseids will peak, so maybe we may have some meteor-induced E-skip like
in November 2001. The only thing I regret about this opening is to not have been able
to tape it, like I did the past seasons. It`s the first time I get Es IDs this season,
believe it or not !

Well, that`s it for now !
I`m very tired, I have to go to bed, `cause tomorrow I`ll be out in the downtown with
my friend all day long like today.
73 and good DX,
Bogdan Chiochiu
