I just got my ticket a few months ago (KB3LYP) after being an SWL DXer since
1976.

You have to determine what exactly you want to do as a ham- work the big boys,
contesting, QRP work, VHF...etc. All that will affect what sort of rig you'll
need.

My interest is going into QRP work so those rigs are quite a bit less expensive
than others.

I cannot/will not especially recommend any equipment but I might recomment
checking out eBay or other ham auction sites and go for good, reliable used
equipment first. You can always sink $1000 into brand new radios once you
figured out where your interest lies as a ham. I picked up a sweet Kenwood
TS-520S off eBay for $175 plus a few QRP kit radios for very low price that
way, although many folks are wary of eBay.

Subject: [HCDX] SWL to HAM Question

Dear Friends,

My wife and I are both avid SWLers, and are thinking that
we would
like to be able to respond to the HAM transmissions that we so
often
hear (if for nothing else to tell them to say their callsign
SLOWLY!).
We are, however, concerned about the expense of purchasing
usable
tranceivers / antennas etc without killing our somewhat
limited
income. Do any SWL/HAMS have suggestions about beginning
equipment?

Many Thanks,
Aaron Prosser
WA4098SWL

---[Start
