Malaysia's ASTRO buys THR.fm: (26 April 05) ASTRO All Asia Networks plc (ASTRO) has acquired Malaysia's second-most popular radio station, THR.fm, for US$7.9 million (RM30 million), Business Times Online has reported. The purchase allows ASTRO's radio subsidiary - Airtime Management & Programming (AMP) - a larger share of radio advertising, which has over the last few years grown at a much faster rate than newspapers or television. "The purchase of THR.fm with a 14 percent share of listeners and a five percent share of radio advertising expenditure, further cements AMP's position as the country's leading radio broadcaster, boosting its share of radio listenership and advertising expenditure to around 62 percent and 79 percent respectively," analysts said. Commenting on the acquisition, ASTRO said the purchase would enable the company to grow its product offerings for the Malay and Indian market segments. With THR.fm in its stable, ASTRO will now operate eight radio stations which include three in Malay, three in English and one in Chinese. (ABU Website)
