Prasar Bharati bats for private radio (Friday, Jan 27, 2006 - 06:00 am) Televisionpoint.com Team Prasar Bharati CEO K S Sarma on Thursday said that private radio stations should be allowed to broadcast news and current affairs programmes. This is a departure from the current norm where only infotainment programmes are allowed to be broadcast.
"The government must allow private radio stations to broadcast news and current affairs programmes since radio can reach more people than any other medium,'' he said. Describing the guidelines under which private radio stations cannot broadcast news or news programmes as "illogical'', Sarma said, "There is no such restriction in force regarding television channels.'' He asked: "If we can see news on private TV channels, why can't we hear it on radio?'' "The government must allow private radio stations to broadcast news and current affairs programmes since radio can reach more people than any other medium," he said on private radio stations and their popularity. He was speaking at the launch of the book 'handbook of the media in contemporary India' edited by Uday Sahay, Deputy Director General of Prasar Bharati here.
