Another article frm an older WUN issue =================== Safety, Urgency, and Distress Calls: Maritime monitors often encounter transmissions that are preceded by special urgency signals. Here are the definitions of the terms used when unusual circumstances dictate. DISTRESS: "MAYDAY", spoken three times, indicates that a vessel is threatened by grave and imminent danger and commands absolute priority over all other communications. URGENCY: "PAN PAN", spoken three times, indicates the safety of a vessel or a person is in jeopardy, e.g. an urgent radio-medical message, "man overboard" or "engine failed, request tow". Only distress calls command a higher priority. SAFETY: "SECURITE" (pronounced SAY-CURE-E-TAY) spoken three times, indicates a message that concerns the safety of navigation or an important weather warning. Radiotelephone "Silence Periods" occur on the International Calling and Distress Frequencies commencing on the hour and half hour for a duration of three minutes. All stations MUST CEASE transmission on 2182, 4125, 6215, 8291, 12290, and 16420 kHz and listen for any distress calls.-
