David Hermges dies. The long-time head of the shortwave service of the Austrian Radio and Radio Austria International, David Hermges, has died in Vienna following a lengthy illness. He was 78. Born in England in 1928, he came to Austria after the war and was based in Carinthia. He then returned to England to study at Cambridge (Philosophy and Modern Languages) and also spent some time at the Sorbonne. He returned to Austria and later began to work for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. His voice was known to generations of listeners at home and abroad from his English news bulletins on the first programme of the ORF, his announcements for all broadcasts from the Salzburg Festival and last, but not least the ORF's English-language news and current affairs programme Report from Austria. David is survived by his wife and one son.
