Honduran president orders radio, TV to air government propaganda
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/05/24/america/LA-GEN-Honduras-
Media.php

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras: President Manuel Zelaya has ordered
private radio and TV stations to broadcast government propaganda to
counteract what he called unfair coverage of his administration.

Zelaya said Wednesday that all 500 radio stations and 100 television
stations would be required to simultaneously air conversations and
interviews with government officials two hours a day, for 10 days
straight. Broadcasters said the transmissions were to start Monday
between 10 p.m. and midnight.

Under Honduran law, the government may order broadcasters to air
messages that are deemed to be of importance to the country.

"We find ourselves obligated to make this decision to counteract the
misinformation of the news media about our 17 months in office,"
Zelaya told a news conference in the Caribbean city of La Ceiba, where
he was inaugurating a water treatment plant.

The College of Journalists, a trade organization with more than 1,200
members, said Zelaya should speak to the media about his
administration's accomplishment instead of resorting to an ineffective
tactic commonly used by military governments that ruled Honduras
from 1956 to 1982.

Zelaya criticized the press earlier this month, saying that "the owners of
this country ... are the owners of the news media, groups with great
economic power and personal interests that focus on exploiting
(Honduras') political and social problems."

In April he unsuccessfully asked Congress to outlaw publishing reports
on violent crimes, saying the press is interested in "glorifying evil to
make money."

The leader of the opposition Innovation and Unity Party, Olban
Valladares, said Thursday that Zelaya "is nearing authoritarianism" with
the new measure.

The Shortwave Report 5/25/07 ?Listen Globally!
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/05/24/18420736.php
by Dan Roberts ( outfarpress [at] saber.net )
Thursday May 24th, 2007 5:09 PM

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a
shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files-
broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast.
Netherlands, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (May 25) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both
broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form
(3.3MB) (28:50)

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, Radio
Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
>From NETHERLANDS- In Lebanon, deadly fighting between the
Lebanese army and Islamist gunmen from the Fatah al-Islam group
has created much chaos- some believe that Syria is involved in the
conflict centered in a Palestinian refugee camp. Members of the UN
security Council want to reprimand Muhamad El Baradei of the IAEA for
stating that Iran should be allowed to keep its nuclear enrichment
program. Israel has warned Hamas in Palestine that none of its leaders
are safe from attack after rocket attacks on Israel.
>From CUBA- There is an increase in attempts to ban the use of cluster
bombs which have been used at an accelerated rate in Iraq and the
Israeli invasion of Lebanon last year. Oxfam has called for an end to
the US choosing the head of the World Bank, and World Bank directors
want Wolfowitz to leave at once, not at the end of June. George Bush
has granted himself extraordinary powers in the event of a catastrophic
emergency, under a National Security Presidential Directive and
Homeland Security Directive. While the well-publicized surge in combat
troops in Iraq has been accomplished, there is a second serious
increase in troop levels underway by extending tours of soldiers already
there.
>From RUSSIA- A commentary on the US single-minded determination
to deploy its missile shield components in the Czech Republic and
Poland, despite the fact that the citizens of those nations are opposed
to the project.

There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on
line at- http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-
shortwaves

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek,
available at http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me
in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If
you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming
version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you
don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem
because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20
minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application
(RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your
computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PST) on
KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via <http://www.kzyx.org
>
There are several other streams that work better- <
http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am and Saturday at 11am(PST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from <
http://www.radio4all.net/podcast.php/.xml?series=outFarpress%20pres
ents > or iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)
Check out the amazing streams at < http://www.radicalradio.org >
And Radio For Peace International at < http://www.rfpi.org >

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station.. I
am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I
put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations
rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production
costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that
have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)

25 May 2007 at 1805 UT noted a station on
4828 with nonstop African music (fair signal).
They continue programming past 1830 without
announcements. At the same time 3396 is carrying
another program. Maybe 4828 is a test from Zimbabwe.
The jammer against SWRA on 4880 is also audible,
so possibly 3 transmitters from Zimbabwe on the
tropical bands at the same time.
