Malaysia, 6049.59, RTM, 1020-1030 A mixture of Islamic type music and
local(?) language comments. So far, this freq is in the clear, but expect
Ecuador to block it shortly. At 1027, a male in chanting. While this is
going on, heavy signal pops up at 1029 with opening remarks from
Ecuador. Malaysia is completely covered. (Chuck Bolland, June 7, 2007)

Thu, 06/07/2007 - 09:34 - admin
06 June 2007 -- The Somali government has closed down three main FM
stations in the capital, Mogadishu. Katy Migiro reports for VOA that the
media clampdown follows a surprise visit by the Ethiopian Prime Minister
aimed at shoring up confidence in the Somali government.
Shabelle Media Network, Horn Afrik and IQK, a Koranic radio station, were
all shut down by a Somali government decree.
This is the second time these three radio stations have been targeted in the
past six months. No reason has been given for this latest closure.
But announcer Mohamed Kawashito, of Radio Puntland that operates in the
semi-autonomous northern region of Somalia, says private radio stations
are shut down when they criticize the government. The stations have in the
past been accused of pro-Islamic bias.
"Several times the traditional government has banned the Shabelle radio,
Horn Afrik radio," he said. "We do not know the reason, but I think
sometimes the local station and local media pointed to bad things or the bad
situation in the central government or traditional government."
Tuesday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi paid a surprise visit to
Mogadishu. Mr. Meles' trip was aimed at boosting the morale of his troops,
which invaded and occupied Somalia in December, as well as that of
Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi who survived a fourth
assassination attempt on Sunday.
But the secretive nature of the unpublicized Meles trip only underscored
how dangerous and violent the Somali capital is.
Nairobi-based Somali analyst Daudi Aweis compares Meles trip to the
surprise visits by U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister
Tony Blair to Iraq, which he fears Somalia is starting to resemble, especially
in the increasing numbers of suicide attacks against targets regarded by
some as supporting a foreign occupying force.
Aweis says the only solution to Somalia's problems is through negotiations,
not violence.
"The best way forward is to have negotiations, because all these problems
are well known," he said. "If they are discussed deeply, a solution can be
obtained. But the military solution will not be the best option to solve these
problems. Because if you try to defeat one side or to exclude one group
from the Cabinet or from the government, it means that that group,
according to their clan lines, they are going to regroup. It takes for them two
or three years and they can come back. So the problem is there again."
Aweis believes there is little hope that progress will be made at the national
reconciliation conference, due to open on June 14.
The transitional government has said it will not talk with the Islamic Courts,
ousted in December, and the Islamic Courts say they will not come to the
negotiating table until Ethiopian troops withdraw.

Japan to Launch Radio Channel Targeting N.Korea
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200706/200706070017.html
The Japanese government will launch a radio channel for North Korea
focusing on Japanese citizens abducted by Pyongyang. A Japanese
government official on Wednesday said the channel will be launched in July
and is different from the privately-run Shiokaze channel that started
broadcasting for North Korea in late March. Shiokaze is run by an activist
group calling itself Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably
Related to North Korea.
The new state-run Japanese radio will focus on the Japanese government's
position on the abduction issue, messages from victims' families, and efforts
to have them sent back to Japan. Shiokaze recently reported the new
channel would carry official messages about the Japanese government's
position. A staffer with Free North Korea Radio, a South Korean radio
station targeting North Korea, said the state-run Japanese channel will
broadcast for an hour a day, half in Korean and half in Japanese. The radio
is under the supervision of the Japanese Foreign Ministry and a Cabinet
committee dealing with the abduction question.
South Korea's only official radio channel targeting North Korea is KBS
Social Education Service. But the channel is mostly educational and targets
not only North Korea but also Korean nationals living in northern regions
such as the Maritime Province of Siberia and China. In South Korea, there
are four civilian radios for North Korea led by North Korean refugees or
activists for human rights in North Korea, including Free North Korea Radio
and Open Radio for North Korea, which transmit their programs using
frequencies of a British shortwave service provider.
Kim Seung-min, the founder of Free North Korea Radio, said the launch of
the state-run Japanese radio is a graphic example showing the Abe
administration's "determination to pressure North Korea."

** CHAD. The extremely distorted signal which has been traced to RNT being over
1 MHz off-frequency from 6165 is still there: June 6 at 0510 check, it was
pretty much centered on 7290 causing severe QRM to BBC in Portuguese, which is
via South Africa, 500 kW at 335 degrees, 0430-0530 and M-F only. Does BBC care?
RNW, DW and our team tracked down the source already when it was on 7312v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** JAPAN [and non]. R. Japan, NHK Warido, really goes after the
language-learners. UT Thu June 7 at 0623 I was hearing Japanese lessons for
Germans on 11970 via Gabon, and at the same time on very strong 11715 direct,
Japanese LL for English-speakers. I wonder how many people actually learn a
language this way? 11715 tho for NE Siberia following the Russian broadcast at
0530 is on a 35 degree beam so might as well be designated for NAm too like
13630. Program is Brush Up Your Japanese, Thu 0620-0654 among other times,
while on Tue at same hours it is Basic Japanese For You (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. XEYU again barely audible, June 7 at 0623 on 9599+ with classical
music, het (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** TURKEY. Not sure why I keep listening to the Live from Turkey webcast,
Tuesdays 1850-1920+ which is also on 9785, but something to distract me while I
am putting the finishing touches on preparing to record WORLD OF RADIO. LFT is
usually just three or two announcers chatting, about how bad the traffic is in
Istanbul, how hot it is in the studio at 10 pm, or the current political
situation, or how Turkey ought to go after the nasty Kurds across the border in
Iraq (which they reportedly did the next day). This time, June 5, they
mentioned that they now know why they have not been getting any calls for
several weeks. It turns out both the phone they had been using and the phone
line are out of order. Some people e- mailed to tell them they tried to call
but could not get thru. The German sexion finally traced the problem, so a
repair order is pending. This time the IS did not start until 1924, assuming
the usual webcast delay of half a minute, so VOT remains flexible about whether
broadcasts last anywhere from 50 to 55 minutes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** U S A. Another time for WORLD OF RADIO on WRMI is 0600 UT Thu on 9955, as I
happened across it at 0621 June 7; Jeff White says that has been added tho like
most of the overnight broadcasts it is ``semi-permanent``. 9955 has been
propagating lately, without jamming, also e.g. UT Mon 0530 with WOR (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. KMOX IBOC is certainly a problem here around sunset, but checking out
recent report that they were running it around local midnight, June 5 at 0545
UT there was no sign of it on 1110-1120-1130. However, when I first tuned in
there was some other kind of pulsing around these very frequencies --- went
away once I unplugged a TV set (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. I thought LV de la RASD, 6300, signed on around 0700,
but June 5 at 0606 it was already going with monotonous chants, 0609 YL
announcement in Arabic, an ID, I think, and into instrumental music, 0610 OM
talking. Meanwhile, RHC mixing product of 6060 leapfrogging over 6180, 120 kHz
further up, could be heard underneath on 6300, and the two produced a SAH of
about 4 Hz, which speaks remarkably for the frequency control of both stations,
unless it is just coincidental. Then DX Mix News, Bulgaria confirmed that the
morning Arabic transmission has shifted to 0600-0800, and evening sign-off an
hour earlier to 2300* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1362, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
Solar-terrestrial indices for 04 June follow. Solar flux 86 and mid-latitude
A-index 11. The mid-latitude K-index at 0600 UTC on 05 June was 0 (4 nT). No
space weather storms were observed for the past 24 hours. No space weather
storms are expected for the next 24 hours (SEC via DXLD)
