The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information
and Publicity, Cde George Charamba officiated at the
switch testing ceremony of the new channel based in
the Midlands city of Gweru.
General manager of the new station, Voice of Zimbabwe/
TV Channel 104, Cde Happison Muchechetere, told The
Sunday Mail that the test would run for the next three
weeks during which time management will be fine tuning
programming and receiving feedback from listeners from
all over the world.
He said while the station would initially begin with
radio broadcasts, television broadcasts were expected
to begin before the end of the year.
Listeners will during day time from 7:30am to 6:30pm,
be able to receive broadcasts on 5 975 kilohertz or 49
metre band while in the evening from 6:30pm to 7:30am
the following day they can tune in on 60 metre band or
4 828 kilohertz.
Those wishing to air their opinions can contact the
station on 011 870 558.
Cde Muchechere said the test run had been highly
successful and the station had received feedback not
only from Zimbabwe but also from as far as Botswana
and South Africa.
"We want to encourage Zimbabweans both at home and in
the Diaspora to tune in to this station for them to
get first hand information about the true Zimbabwe.
"During the test run, we will be fine tuning our
programes, which will include news, music, sports,
political debates and our cultural heritage," he said.
He said Voice of Zimbabwe, the country's first world
station would broadcast on short wave band, which is
powerful enough to reach all parts of the world.
Broadcasts are intended to reach target audiences as
far afield as Australia, Europe and the United
States.
Most worldwide broadcasting stations such as the Voice
of America, BBC World Service and Radio China
International utilise short wave electronic
transmission to reach listeners across the globe.
Cde Muchechetere is a veteran journalist and
broadcaster who has held several senior positions at
both the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Holdings and New
Ziana's electronic media division.
He said Zimbabwe's first world broadcasting services
mandate would not be to spread propaganda, but to give
a balanced account of events in the country through
unbiased news reports, analyses and discussions.

Radio Farda Correspondent Describes Ordeal From Tehran
http://www.payvand.com/news/07/jun/1059.html
June 6, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Radio Farda broadcaster Parnaz Azima has
been prevented from leaving Iran for the past five months. Azima -- an
Iranian-American -- had traveled to Tehran in January to visit her sick
mother when authorities confiscated her Iranian passport and charged
her with working for Radio Farda and spreading propaganda against
the state. Since then Azima has been unable to leave Iran and return to
her work in Prague. Azima talks about her situation in a phone interview
with RFE/RL correspondent Golnaz Esfandiari.
Parnaz Azima working in Prague
(file photo - RFE/RL)
RFE/RL: You have been trapped in Iran for the past five months,
authorities have confiscated your passport, and you cannot return to
your work and life here. How do you feel about this?
Parnaz Azima: On the surface it seems that everything is well, I'm in my
mother's house and I can go anywhere I want and no one stops me.
That is on the surface; but the truth is that I am facing a state of
uncertainty and waiting. I can describe it as a prisoner who is in a larger
prison and the length of the prison term has not been determined. [The
prisoner] is expecting an answer any minute that he will remain in jail or
be released. But I have to say that I'm grateful when I compare my
[situation] with that of Haleh Esfandiari, Kian Tajbakhsh, Ali Shakeri
[Esfandiari and Tajbakhsh are Iranian-American scholars recently jailed
in Iran; Shakeri is an Iranian-American peace activist who has also
been detained], and many other prisoners who do not enjoy the relative
freedom that I have. I do my best to use this opportunity -- when I left
Iran some 25 years ago I left some unfinished work -- I have found
some of my manuscripts but many have been lost and I am working on
them.
RFE/RL: There's been lots of support for you in the United States and
internationally and several human rights groups have called on Iran to
let you go and also release Esfandiari, Tajbakhsh, and Shakeri, the
Iranian-Americans who have been jailed in Iran. Have you received
support also from inside Iran?
Azima: There has not been such organized support [inside Iran], though
I have received emotional support from my family, my friends, and it's
very positive. There are people that I didn't even know and they just had
heard my name and seen my work; they came to my house with
flowers. Such gestures lift up my morale but I also have to say that the
extent of such support is very limited because everybody knows that it
is very likely that my phone is being tapped, my calls are being
monitored and people are to a large extent worried about their everyday
lives. They are common people with no support and protection
therefore I have many close friends who have not contacted me and I
understand them and I know that they have the right to think about their
own [situations].
RFE/RL: You have been charged with spreading propaganda against
the state by working for Radio Farda. What is your reaction to these
charges?
Azima: I gave an example to [the authorities] who interrogated me:
news organizations such as the BBC, CNN, and others that are based
in foreign countries, the governments of [these countries] can also
accuse them of propaganda against them because they bring the voice
of opposition forces to their [audience] -- and even the voice of those
who are against the policies of the U.S. government -- they cover their
views. In my eyes this is what journalism is all about: informing freely.
Unfortunately in [Iran] journalism is such that journalists should always
praise officials or they face censorship and pressure. But if we increase
our awareness about journalism and the principle of the free flow of
information then we will realize that [such practice] is not propaganda
against the state, in my view it's to the benefit of a state. Of course
democratic states, because dictatorships or totalitarian regimes are
afraid of people, they're afraid of telling the truth, they're concerned
about informing people. But officials from Iran's Islamic republic, who
always say that [Iran] is one of the best democracies in the world,
should not have any fear for [those] telling the truth. If they really care
about people's thoughts and opinions, they should consider people's
ideas and value them in order to improve the Islamic republic. The
other issue is that journalism is a profession that doesn't take sides and
is impartial; a journalist should say everything objectively therefore I
think -- as Mohammad Hossein Aghasi [Azima's lawyer] has said --
these charges are baseless.
RFE/RL: Do we know how authorities will proceed regarding your case?
Have they set a date for another court hearing?
Azima: The judge in charge of my case decided that I will not be
detained but I was allowed to remain free on a very heavy and
unprecedented bail of about 500 million tooman [approximately
$550,000]. They will now do their investigation -- the Intelligence
Ministry is doing the investigation. It will give the results to the judge in
charge of the case and the judiciary, then they will decide about having
a court session. My case is waiting now for the response from the
Intelligence Ministry so I will have to see what their decision will be
regarding my case. It is possible that they will decide to return my
passport and since I'm an optimistic person I think it is very likely, but it
could be quite the opposite -- so I'm waiting and I've been in this state
for five months now.

Israel 'stops' West Bank radio

The pirate broadcasts disrupted flights at Israel's
Ben Gurion airport [GALLO/GETTY]
A pirate radio station in the West Bank, which had disrupted flights at
Israel's Ben Gurion international airport, has been shut down, according
to Israeli officials.
Israel's communications minister said on Thursday that the station had
been shut down, easing disruptions at Ben Gurion airport and avoiding
a threatened strike by airport workers.
Ariel Atias was quoted in Haaretz as saying: "We have stopped the
operations of the pirate radio station in Ramallah in a way that is best
not spoken about, and I will not provide any more details, but it is clear
to everyone that this is not the way."
Broadcasts from the radio station had brought airport traffic at Ben
Gurion to a standstill several times because of interference to control
tower communications.
Airport staff had threatened to go on strike if the broadcasts were not
stopped.
Airport authorities have said the problem occurs regularly but that traffic
controllers can usually find alternate frequencies and rarely cancel
flights.
But late on Wednesday, all takeoffs at the airport were canceled after
the pirate broadcasts disrupted all the frequencies used by air traffic
controllers, Uri Orlev, an airport official, told Army Radio.
The pirate broadcasts were a "clear danger" that "do not allow us to run
the airport as we should," Orlev told Israel's Channel 2 TV and
appealed to the government to put pirate radio stations out of business.
Haaretz reported on Thursday that Israel's Communications Ministry
planned to tackle illegal radio stations by fining advertisers who use
their broadcasts and thereby cut revenues to the stations.

The Shortwave Report 6/8/07 ?Listen Globally!
by Dan Roberts ( outfarpress [at] saber.net )
Thursday Jun 7th, 2007 5:26 PM
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a
shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files-
broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast.
Netherlands, Cuba, China, and Russia.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (June 8) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both
broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form
(3.3MB) (28:59)
This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, Radio
Havana Cuba, China Radio International, and the Voice of Russia.
>From NETHERLANDS- As the G-8 Summit gets underway in Germany,
NGOs are accusing G-8 members of failing to deliver on debt relief
promises made at the last summit, and exaggerating claims of aid to
the African continent. Larry Birns of the Council On Hemispheric Affairs
comments on the government closure of a television network in
Venezuela, which the American press portrays as a crackdown on free
speech.
>From CUBA- A US warship in the Indian Ocean shelled a remote
village in Somalia, a nation the US is not at war with.
>From CHINA- The EU and Japan have announced plans to cut in half
greenhouse gases by 2050. China has issued a plan for dealing with
global warming and claims that they have already reduced CO2
emissions. The Iranian president says it is too late to stop his country's
nuclear development. In the Czech Republic, the US continued to claim
that the so-called missile defense system is not a threat to Russia.
>From RUSSIA- Mass protests were staged in the Czech republic while
George Bush was visiting on his way to the G-8 summit, while others in
Europe see the missiles provoking a new arms race. A commentary on
Russia's recent missile tests and Putin's threat to withdraw from the
Conventional Forces In Europe Treaty. Mikhail Gorbachev has warned
the US of falling into complacency and arrogance with the so-called
missile defense shield. While Putin and Bush face off at the G-8
summit, an interesting survey shows that Russian and American
civilians actually trust and appreciate each other.
There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on
line at- http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-
shortwaves
I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek,
available at http://radio.mediageek.net
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me
in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If
you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming
version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you
don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem
because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20
minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application
(RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your
computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PST) on
KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via <http://www.kzyx.org
>
There are several other streams that work better- <
http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am and Saturday at 11am(PST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from <

ents > or iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)
Check out the amazing streams at < http://www.radicalradio.org >
And Radio For Peace International at < http://www.rfpi.org >
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I
put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations
rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production
costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that
have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)

** ANGUILLA. More irregularity from DGS, or rather Pastor Melissa Scott who
seems to be devoting most of the airtime to herself these days: June 8 at 1525
check, nothing on 11775 aside Brasil 11780, but at 1544 she was back (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** AUSTRALIA. June 8 at 0525, 19m was hopping solstitially, with various
signals from Asia and Pacific, especially R. Australia on 15160 // 15240 in
English, but absent from the usual third // which is strongest, 15515.
Transmitter trouble at Shep? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CHINA. Tho there were lots of Chinese-language signals, RFA and/or jamming
on 16m, June 8 at 0527 Firedrake on 18180 against Sound of Hope was JBA (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH. VOK, 11710 to NAm, works surprisingly well on some mornings,
such as June 8 at 1521 during stilted English broadcast with usual bull, 1526
into music, also characteristic with some kind of primitive electronic
instrument, Hammond organ? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** LIBYA [and non]. June 8 at 1317 I found the Afropop music jammer on 17637.0
with good signal, and on BFO I could find it flanked by much weaker carriers on
17635.0 and 17637.5, which may have been Sawt al Amal and/or other jammer
inside Libya. After 1400, 17637.0 music was alone, and still going at 1518 as
usual (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** THAILAND. BBCWS, 21660 via Nakhon Sawan, is a prime propagation beacon at
Solstice, scheduled all the way from 03 to 11 in English at 25 degrees, so also
toward NAm. June 8 at 0529, around midnight here (really 11 pm LMT), was good
with some flutter, airing programme prommos, then back to World Today. Must
also look for R. Thailand`s English to Europe at same hour scheduled via Udorn
on 17655 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. CODAR, ocean wave radar, has invaded the 22m band, which is now
supposed to be exclusively SWBC worldwide, isn`t it? June 8 at 0522, weak CODAR
pulses ranged from 13700 to 13760, interrupted on 13730 by Austria. The other
CODAR transmitter, centred on 13550, was at a slightly higher pitch (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Hello !
In spite of the lack of any alerts on your web-site, there was some weak Es
hanging on in Montreal during the past few hours. Here is my logs of unIDs (all
heard on the car-radio between Pointe-Clerc and Pierrefonds):
89.9 1417 EDT: talkshow regarding unusual radio programs !! VERY strong,
completly over The New Hot 89.9 (Ottawa) for about 2 minutes, then faded to
never return !
89.9 1423 EDT: in and out for a few seconds with a weak-fair signal in MONO,
playing a REAL LIFE song, similar to "Send Me An Angel" but with a slightly
more emlancolic melodic theme ! Never above the "fair" strenght and quickly
lost to Ottawa
90.7 1452 EDT: salsa weak with the STEREO pilot on and off !!! Cuba via a
long-haul single-hop Es (1600 miles to Varadero) ? a Florida's multicultural
non-educational broadcaster ? Weak on the car-radio, with CBOF Ottawa gone all
thorugh the Ceres and Edward Higgins street, but on the Sangean CST 818
portable with a longer telescopic antenna, impossible to null out CBOF for
hearing anything useful !!! Near Des Sources (Dollards-des-Ormeaux ->
Montreal's West Island), a mess was heard on this channel consisting of at
least 3 or 4 stations fading very quickly !
As far as this is concerned, since a severe Thunderstorm watch is going on for
both Montreal and Ottawa, and during heavy rainfalls the amount of meteors
entering the Earth's atmosphere is way much higher than usually, long (and
impressive) MS bursts aren't too be excluded.
I don't know. I'm puzzled than the Band is said to be closed in the US and that
nothing was coming through your unfortunatly empty of Es channel 2, dear Girard
!
Let's hope something solid is coming soon !
May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu (in Pierrefonds / Montreal)
