Peru, 4857.41, Radio La Hora, 2345-2359, Noted a male in Spanish comments.
Noise was impossible, but still
able to make out some of the signal. Signal strength was threshold. (Chuck
Bolland, July 26, 2007)

Peru, 5014.15, Radio Aultura, 0945-1000, Noise and poor condx make for tough
listening this morning, but
on occasion the signal improved slightly to allow receiption of a male in
Spanish comments. Every once in awhile
he is joined by a female. Music is presented every couple of minutes. Signal
was threshold with the noise.

DXers,

At this time (1326 UTC) I am experiencing a shortwave fadeout where the only
stations I am able to hear without
difficulty are those from North America and Carriebean such
as Canada and Cuba (9550 & 5025) and CRI (9570).

Anyone else having this problem about this time?

IBB Will Shutter Transmission Site in Delano, Calif.
 http://www.rwonline.com/pages/s.0100/t.7486.html
7.27.2007

The International Broadcasting Bureau will stop broadcasting from Delano,
Calif., at the end of October, RW has learned.

The decision was announced in an internal e-mail to IBB employees on July
24. The move will result in job losses at Delano; the number was not
immediately available.

The announcement stated that the move is being made "as a result of the
Broadcasting Board of Governors' changing global mission to meet current
U.S. government broadcast requirements, along with reduced budgets and
changes in technology ... As operating budgets decrease, we have had little
choice but to downsize and realign the IBB transmission network."

IBB officials told RW Thursday night that the Delano facility will remain in
"cold storage standby status." As budget allows, a spokeswoman said, "we
will redistribute viable equipment to the rest of the IBB network."

In its memo, the IBB noted the historical meaning of the Delano
Transmitting Station.

"Located about 140 miles north of Los Angeles, California, the station
began shortwave broadcasts to the Pacific Theater of World War II in 1944.
In early days, it beamed broadcasts directly to local audiences and to
retransmitting facilities in Hawaii, Okinawa and the Philippines. Later the
station provided critical shortwave broadcasts to Cuba, South America and
Asia. These broadcasts clearly helped shape today's world."

But the IBB Delano station "relies entirely on shortwave radio transmissions,
a format that is relatively expensive to operate," the organization told
employees. "Although shortwave was the focus of international
broadcasting for many decades, shortwave has declined in importance as
traditional audiences have shifted to FM and MW radio, the Internet and
television."

A Wikipedia entry states that the Delano relay station is "famous for having
a rare installation of a TCI HRS 12/6/1 directional curtain array transmission
system" and said the facility was originally constructed in the 1940s as
KCBR by CBS.

IBB retains U.S.-based transmitting facilities in North Carolina, Flordia and
the territory of the Northern Marianas.

The Shortwave Report 7/27/07 ?Listen Globally!
by Dan Roberts ( outfarpress [at] saber.net )
Thursday Jul 26th, 2007 5:56 PM

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a
shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files-
broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China,
Netherlands, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (July 27) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast
quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (4.9MB) (28:59)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio
Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
>From CHINA- American corporation Westinghouse signed contracts to build
4 third-generation nuclear powerplants in China and transfer core
technology. China has urged that the interests of developing nations be
addressed at the Doha trade talks in Geneva. Foreign ministers of Egypt
and Jordan are in Israel representing the Arab League in talks on an Arab
peace initiative. Geo Bush has condemned critics who claim Al-Qaeda
operation in Iraq is distinct from those who attacked the World Trade
Center.
>From NETHERLANDS- The continuing rains in England have flooded vast
areas causing thousands to be evacuated. A press review on the floods,
covering research that claims that the excessive rains are a direct
consequence of global warming. While the rains are flooding in N Europe,
heat waves are killing many and creating havoc in Hungary and elsewhere.
By the way, 40 degrees Celsius equals 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
>From CUBA- Colombia has agreed to stop the aerial application of
herbicides to kill coca plantations along the border with Ecuador. A
Viewpoint on Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega's accusation that the US
has launched a campaign of destabilization in his country. Australia is being
courted by the US and others to become the major nuclear waste dump for
the planet.
>From RUSSIA- 2000 tons of radioactive water leaked into a hole beneath
the earthquake damaged nuclear power plant in Japan. A commentary on
the announced delay in assessing the effectiveness of the so-called "troop
surge" in Iraq. Arguments have heated up over Russia's refusal to extradite
citizens accused by Britain of involvement in the death of a Russian spy.

There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on line
at- http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-shortwaves

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek,
available at http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in
the
last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just
want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower
sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-
speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow
connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will
play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime,
iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PST) on KZYX/Z
Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- <
http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am and Saturday at 11am(PST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from <
http://www.radio4all.net/podcast.php/.xml?series=outFarpress%20presents > or
iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)
Check out the amazing streams at < http://www.radicalradio.org >
And Radio For Peace International at < http://www.rfpi.org >

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am
still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into
this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations
rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production
costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have
donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
