Just had a phone talk with our colleagues from Samara about all of these

September 7, 2007 (KHARTOUM) --- United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki
Moon Said today that the crisis in Darfur did not cause any reallocation
of funds from Southern Sudan.

"No money pledged for the development of South Sudan is going to Darfur"
Ban Ki-Moon told UN Radio Miraya FM in Juba in interview.

During Oslo international donors conference, held in April 2005, donor
countries pledged 4.5 billion US dollars to bolster peace and
reconstruction in the war-plagued southern Sudan

However officials in the South have complained that they have received a
small portion of these pledges.

The UN top official stressed that the United Nations Mission in Sudan
(UNMIS) is "a billion dollar peacekeeping operation, designed solely to
support the parties in implementing the CPA."

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in January 2005
between the National Congress Party which then ruled in the National
Government and the then rebel Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement,
bringing an end to 21 years of civil war in the country.

The Minister of Information in the semi-autonomous Government of South
Sudan, Dr Samson Kwaje, claimed last month that money pledged for
Southern Sudan by the international community was going to Darfur.

Ban Ki-Moon said that he was "overwhelmed by the warm welcome of the
people of south Sudan". He said this ''makes my resolve further
strengthened to work for the peace and security and development of
southern Sudan".

Ban Ki-Moon was speaking during a visit to the southern capital Juba
during this week's visit to Sudan which also took him to Darfur and
Khartoum.

New religious radio station launched in Tunisia
http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=22200

?Radio Zaytouna? aims to promote true Muslim values of enlightened
thought, tolerance, solidarity, moderation.

TUNIS - Tunisia's first 24-hour religious radio station, Radio Zaytouna
for the Noble Koran, went to air Thursday. It is the country's third
privately-owned station and will broadcast around the clock.

Tunisian President Zayn al-Abidin Ben Ali late on Wednesday
announced Radio Zaytouna ('olive tree)'s launch which has been timed
to coincide with the start of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Around 80 percent of Radio Zaytouna's programming will focus on the
Koran. The remaining 20 percent will focus on the life and teachings of
the Prophet Mohammed, as well as the lives of other prophets and
preachers.

The station's licence to broadcast "confirms interest in nurturing the
Muslim faith and those who are involved with it," said Radio Zaytouna's
owner Muhammad Sakhr al-Matiri.

"The aim is for Tunis to remain a beacon in the Islamo-Arab world and
a symbol of dialogue and fruitful interaction between cultures and
civilisations," al-Matiri added.

Radio Zaytouna's launch shows "constant attention to Islam and in
interest in its revival and the wish to promote enlightened thought and
true Muslim values, including tolerance, solidarity and moderation," said
an unnamed Tunisian official.

Although freedom of opinion and expression is guaranteed by the
Tunisian constitution, the government tightly controls the media. Until
late 2003 the state had a monopoly on radio broadcasting.

The state-run Tunisian Radio and Television Establishment (ERTT)
operates two national TV channels and several radio networks.

Egyptian and pan-Arab satellite TV stations command large audiences.
Two London-based opposition TV channels can be received via
satellite; Al Mustaqillah TV and Zaytouna TV.

Journalists working for Shebelle Media Network have vowed not to give
in intimidation after sixteen of them have been briefly detained today by
forces from the transitional federal government of Somalia.

"We are not going to stop our profession as journalists because of
threat and intimidation as happened today" reads a statement issued in
the name of all journalists working for Shebelle Radio which an
independent media house based in Somalia's volatile capital city of
Mogadishu.

Before the troops came into the premises of Shebelle Media Network,
there were sporadic but deliberate shooting targeted the hall where the
daily editorial meeting of the radio takes.

the TFG forces have fired ten rounds at the premises of the Radio
station before they came, said one journalist who doesn't want to be
named because of fear.

Meanwhile, the executive chairman of Shebelle Media Network Mr.
Abdmaalik Yusuf Mohamud has appealed to the Somali government to
withdraw some of its forces stationed at the main gate of the radio
station.

"These troops sitting our main entrance are harassing any journalists
getting in or out of Shebelle Media Network and it is the same that thru
TV and Radio of GBC was closed down by its management" said Mr.
Maalik in a statement.

GBC is another independent media house which is now off air after
Somalia's transitional government has deployed troops at its main gate
and that has led all its personal to cease their jobs as the deployed
forces have posed great risk to the journalists.

Burmese Turn to Foreign Radios for Latest News
http://www.irrawaddy.org/article.php?art_id=8627
By Violet Cho
September 17, 2007

Email Article Print Article

The people of Burma are turning ever more to outside broadcasts and
the media in exile to learn the latest news about the continuing protests
against recent price hikes.

With state media strictly censored and most Internet news sites
blocked, people in increasing numbers are tuning in to the shortwave
broadcasts of such international radio stations as the BBC, the Voice of
America and Radio Free Asia.

Although the regime blocks most Internet news sites and keeps users
under surveillance, those with the know-how are still able to access
online services provided by The Irrawaddy, Mizzima and NewEra.

According to an Open Net Initiative survey, 85 percent of email service
provider sites are subject to a high level of filtering in Burma. Of sites
with content judged to be sensitive to the Burmese state, 84 percent
are blocked. They include nearly all political opposition and pro-
democracy sites.

More than 50 phone services, mostly mobile phones used by members
of the opposition National League for Democracy and other activists,
were cut off last week in another regime move to prevent the spread of
free and accurate information.

Media censorship by the Burmese military regime severely restricts
access to unbiased information. State-monopoly radio and television
closely control all broadcast media, and the junta's Press Scrutiny
Board orders articles even slightly critical of the regime to be inked over
or torn from offending issues.

In its own coverage of the continuing demonstrations, the regime media
invariably blame protesters, activists and NLD members for the
violence that results when the authorities and pro-regime thugs crack
down on the protests.

One Rangoon woman spoke for many when she told The Irrawaddy:
?We rely on Burmese media in exile a lot now; they are the main source
of news about what is currently happening in our community and areas
around us.?

Another Rangoon resident said he and others he knew had stopped
reading the local press for news of current affairs.

The Shortwave Report 9/14/07 ?Listen Globally!
by Dan Roberts ( outfarpress [at] saber.net )
Thursday Sep 13th, 2007 4:50 PM

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a
shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files-
broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China,
Netherlands, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (September 14) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both
broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form
(4.9MB) (28:59)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International,
Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
>From CHINA- The US Treasury Secretary warns against punishing
China for its economic policies. A Canadian report points out that most
of the Chinese made toys recently recalled were design errors not
manufacturing problems. A team has arrived in N Korea to plan the
disabling of the nuclear facilities. The S Korean president says a peace
treaty with the North will be unveiled at an upcoming summit. The UN
Secretary General is optimistic about a future settlement in the Darfur
region of Sudan.
>From NETHERLANDS- The Dutch Minister of Education suggested
lifting a ban on Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf," while others have
called for a ban on the Koran. Greenpeace published some interesting
statistics about how first world nations consume first growth forests,
which is expected to increase along with the demand for biofuels.
There is a proposal in the Netherlands to require a 3 day waiting period
before the purchase of magic mushrooms. The Dutch Navy has sent 2
ships to aid Nicaragua in the recovery from hurricane Felix.
>From CUBA- A Viewpoint on the tragic destruction in Nicaragua from
the recent hurricane. A Viewpoint on recent and upcoming elections in
Guatemala, where political violence has resulted in 6000 deaths in the
past year. September 11th was the 34th anniversary of the coup which
ousted President Allende in Chile. The British medical journal The
Lancet published a letter signed by 260 doctors and medical personnel
from around the world condemning the doctors at Guantanamo prison
for ignoring torture.
>From RUSSIA- A commentary on the differences between US and
British perspectives on their war on Afghanistan. The Russian envoy to
the UN has been circulating a proposal to ban weapons from outer
space.

There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on
line at- http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-
shortwaves

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek,
available at http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me
in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If
you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming
version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you
don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem
because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20
minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application
(RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your
computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PDST) on
KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- <
http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am and Monday at 5:30pm(PDST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from <
http://www.radio4all.net/podcast.php/.xml?series=outFarpress%20pres
ents > or iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)
Check out the amazing streams at < http://www.radicalradio.org >
And Radio For Peace International at < http://www.rfpi.org >

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I
put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations
rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production
costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that
have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
