On 4 Oct around 1630 UT noted Ethiopian jammer on 7800
with some talk underneath. After a while the jammer stopped
and the frequency was empty. Scanning around noted Eritrean
broadcast on 7900 weak but clear. It was in parallel with
Eritrea on 7180. After a while both channels were caught by
jammer. The Ethiopian "multitone" jammer audio was also in synchro
on both frequencies.
Eritrean 1st program was on 7100.
I wonder if Eritrea now uses R Bana transmitter during 16-17 time block.

Hello Dxers,
The DX test of WIGG, 1420 KHZ, Wiggins, Mississippi didn't go
well at my QTH. I listened to the frequency during the test hours of 0900 to
1000 UTC and couldn't pull them out. I copied multiple stations on that
frequency, for the most part not understandable, which created a high pitched
het. What I could pull out was mostly talk radio stations and most of the time
WHK out of Cleveland, Ohio covered them up. I managed to filter out the het but
still with no results. Once I did hear country music but it was down in the mud
but that might have been WIGG but not enough for a positive ID. I had my
outdoor loop antenna aimed right at Mississippi. It was a big let down for me
as I was geared up and ready with a blank reception report form. I guess that
the frequency was just too congested for any kind of verifiable copy from here.
I hope that the rest of you that tuned in for the test had better luck than I
did! I wish to thank the station management for taking t!
he time and effort to do this.

Saturday around 1905UTC I was listening to HLAZ Jeju on 1566 khz.

The signal was good, but had some fading. In this moment of fading I heard
an other station ( male talking) of which I don't think it is AIR Nagpur.

The language sounds very unfamiliar to me, but can be an African language?
If it is an African language, can it be TWR Benin?

You can hear a recording on:

 <http://webdisk.planet.nl/mvarnhem/publiek/album/UNID%201566.mp3>
http://webdisk.planet.nl/mvarnhem/publiek/album/UNID%201566.mp3

It starts with rlg songs = HLAZ S Korea

Than you hear the UNID language, especially well audible during a short
silence of HLAZ, than again HLAZ gets stronger with Korean.

Anybody has a suggestion?

Max van Arnhem

North Korea Jams Overseas Private Radio Broadcasts
http://www.dailynk.com/english/read.php?cataId=nk00100&num=2865
By Namgung Min
[2007-11-05 01:39 ]
A study reveals that North Korea has been jamming private radio
broadcasts from South Korea dedicated to listeners in North Korea.

Northeast Asian Broadcasting Institute, a private radio broadcasting
institute, disclosed in the 10th issue of its monthly "Northeast Asian
Broadcasting Study," that North Korea has been jamming most of
South Korean radio programs which target North Korean listeners
except "Global Korean Network" of Korean Broadcasting System
(KBS), South Korea's premier public broadcaster.

The list of radio stations which broadcast programs dedicated to North
Korean people comes as follows: Radio Free Asia, Voice of America,
KBS's Global Korean Network, Free North Korea, Open Radio for North
Korea, Far East Broadcasting Company, North Korea Mission Radio,
Shiokaze of Japan and Radio Free Chosun.

The Institute had conducted a research on the condition of the
reception of radio broadcasts dedicated to North Korean listeners
through shortwave radio during the week between October 1st and 7th.
The study found out that almost all radio broadcasts, targeting both
North Korean listeners such as VOA and RFA and South Korean
listeners such as Central Chosun broadcasting station and Pyongyang
Broadcast station, experienced radio signal jamming.

Global Korean Network of Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) was the
only program broadcasted without interference. It is a radio program
aired on media-wave, so its frequency remains relatively stable from
jamming. Moreover, in these days, the program greatly curtailed its
contents specifically targeting North Korean people. Therefore, the
institute argued that the North Korean authorities might have
considered the program as insignificant and so ignored it.

Since the North Korean authorities continue to jam overseas private
radio broadcasts dedicated North Korean people, it is important to
come up with some countermeasures against the interference.

Meanwhile, the number of North Korean who listens to the foreign radio
broadcasts has been increasing particularly among the young people.
Many defectors said that it was KBS Liberty Radio which sounded
clearest. They said they have also heard of the radio programs of VOA
and Far East Broadcasting Company.

A defector, Kim Sung Chul, said, "Since 2000, the number of North
Korean people who try to watch foreign films and listen to south Korean
radio programs has greatly increased." He added, "People use
electrical wiring or an antenna to get a signal. It is hard for the North
Korean authorities to stop the people from listening to radio even if they
try to jam foreign radio broadcasts."

Ha Tae Kyung, the head of Open Radio for North Korea said, "We need
to use more radio frequencies to avoid North Korea's jamming
interference. However, many private radio stations dedicated to North
Korean listeners have financial difficulties. We really need support from
South Korean government."

Ethiopian forces close down Somali FM radio station.
http://www.shabelle.net/news/ne3926.htm

Mogadishu 03, Nov.07 ( Sh.M.Network)- Reports from central Somalia
say Ethiopian armed forces have crossed the border entering in
Goldogob district in Mudug region in central Somalia on early Saturday
morning.

According to Goldogob residents, the Ethiopians with armored vehicles
and battle wagons have crossed into Goldogob district raiding an
Islamic school and then taking two Quranic teachers with them from the
school.

The Ethiopians are holding the two teachers in an area which few kilo
meters away from the town.

It is unspecific why these two teachers have been taken away by the
Ethiopians but some reports suggest that local elders are waging
dramatic efforts to secure their release.

In the meantime, Ethiopians have also ordered the closure of an
independent privately owned Radio FM station in the town,

Alhikma Quranic Radio has been on air for only two weeks and it is
privately owned radio that was recently established in Goldogob town.

It is not clear the motives behind the closure of this newly set up Radio
but Goldogob inhabitants say the Radio began airing the developments
in the Somali capital Mogadishu in which many Somalis in Ogden
region widely listen.

Abdurrahman Warsame, one of Alhikma Quranic staffers told Radio
Shabelle that none of their employees detained, adding that, he is
unaware of the main reasons Ethiopian forces closed down their Radio
Station.

Somalia: an FM radio reopens after closed by Ethiopian troops
http://www.shabelle.net/news/ne3932.htm

Mogadishu 04, Nov.07 ( Sh.M.Network)- An FM radio comes back to air
after closed by the Ethiopian troops at Galdogob district in Mudug
region in central Somalia.

The coming back of Hikma FM radio in Galdogob district came after the
traditional elders in the district had a crucial talk with the Ethiopian
troops on the ground as Abdirahman Warsame an employee of the
radio told radio Shabelle.

The Ethiopian troops said they closed the radio with an order from
above (their brigade).

The traditional elders asked the Ethiopian troops to show them the
warrant letter to close down the radio station, and the Ethiopian troops
said they will submit in the coming Saturday.

Hikma FM radio was off air for three hours, and it is the first time the
FM faced such problems since its opening two weeks ago.

Fellow DXers,

I started tuning in to 1420 kHz about 0858 UTC and received some QRN, but
no voice or music. As time passed, R. Formula out of Matamoros came in
fairly well. This station is about 60 miles ESE of McAllen, TX, my QTH. On my
2010 I switched back and forth from a whip to a random lw. Both were fair with
RX of R.Formula only. I also worked my R-2000 with an AOR-LA380 loop. I was
able to null out R. Formula, but nothing else was heard. I worked both rigs
for about 1/2 hour, when Spicy, my poodle, told me it was time to get back to
bed, so I did that. This was my first attempt with the tests and I was
disappointed. Maybe, I shouldn't be.

    Some Questions:

Was R. Formula too close by? Only 1 kw output. WRTH says that it to TX
until 0600 UTC.
Is a 12 inch loop too small? Indoors?
Did I expect too much down here in the RGV?

Any comments, suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Several days ago I heard a couple of minutes of an English language news
broadcast just after 0400 on 1548 khz. It was only in briefly, but it
sounded more like an international broadcaster than a station intended
for a local audience. Any information on what station in the European
region would be broadcasting in English at that time would be
appreciated. It would seem most likely that the source of the
broadcast was the Grigoriopol station in Moldova, but I haven't found a
listing of a station using the site at that time. Thanks.
