Hello Dxers,
The test of this morning was a flop for me. 940 KHZ in
Montreal broadcasting "Coast to Coast" was covering everything up. I managed to
null them out a little but then I couldn't pull anything understandable out of
the mud. Maybe I'll have better luck on the next test. Have to try anyway!

The first reports on last night's DX Test from WFAW are coming in. It looks
as though lots of their signal was going north and south, and most of the
more distant listeners - including yours truly - heard on Morse code and
sweep tones. Those a little closer to the station heard some of their
interesting programming, including special music and PSAs for amateur radio.

Thanks to Ernie Swanson for running this challenging, relatively low power
test, and to everyone who listened. Please keep those e-mails coming, and
I'll publish a final report in a couple of days. Here is the preliminary
list of those who positively or tentatively logged the test.

The Shortwave Report 11/09 Listen Globally!
by Dan Roberts ( outfarpress [at] saber.net )
Thursday Nov 8th, 2007 6:32 PM

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a
shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files-
broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China,
Netherlands, Spain, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (November 9) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast
quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (4.9MB) (28:59)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio
Netherlands, Spanish National Radio, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of
Russia.
>From CHINA- China's lunar probe has entered into its orbit around the
moon- if you wonder why this is important, search on the web for Helium 3
and nuclear fusion. China's automobile manufacturers are developing
alternative energy vehicles. China has asked that all nations follow the
Chemical Weapons Convention.
>From NETHERLANDS- In Pakistan, thousands of Human Rights activists,
lawyers, and judges have been arrested- a report from a member of Human
Rights Watch. Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, has been helping to
negotiate between the Colombian government and FARC rebels- some
Colombians worry that Chavez is supporting the rebels.
>From SPAIN- Guatemala's newly elected President plans to take back
territory from heavily-armed drug gangs. The devastation from the floods in
Mexico continues to be uncovered. I apologize for the poor sound quality of
these stories but I do want you to consider tuning in to SNR.
>From CUBA- Developing nations are being forced to grow crops for ethanol
rather than food for starving people in their own countries. UN experts say
that more nations are using mercenaries in conflict zones, but that the
nations will be held responsible for their actions. The UN Secretary-General
spoke out against the continued use of land mines, calling on countries to
ban their use.
>From RUSSIA- A US opinion poll nearly 3/4's of Americans are dissatisfied
with their governments' activities. A commentary on Condi Rice's cable to
State Department officials about the need for them to serve in Iraq.
There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on line
at- http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-shortwaves

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek, available
at http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in
the
last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just
want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower
sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-
speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow
connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will
play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime,
iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PDST) on KZYX/Z
Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- <
http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am and Monday at 5:30pm(PDST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from <

Check out the amazing streams at < http://www.radicalradio.org >
And Radio For Peace International at < http://www.rfpi.org >

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am
still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into
this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting
this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so
through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!

TEHRAN, Nov. 11 (ISNA)-The Islamic Republic of Iran's Youth Radio
channel intends to connect the world's similar channels so to start a
discussion program among young population of the world.

Twenty five radio channels have been selected up to now according to the
similarity of their content and performance to that of Iran's.

Forty five selected radio channels in Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union
meeting had received e-mails conveying the message "the world's youths
want to talk to each other."

The first step of the program was to make connections and the next will be
voicing the topics which youths need to talk about.

Human rights, liberty and democracy are among subjects for discussion in
this project. ________________________

National Union of Somali Journalists (Mogadishu)

PRESS RELEASE
12 November 2007
Posted to the web 12 November 2007

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is gravely concerned
about the growing press freedom crisis in Somalia following today's (12
November 2007) shutting down of Radio Shabelle, a popular Radio Station
in Mogadishu, by the Security Forces of the Transitional Federal
Government of Somalia.

Around 11:30am Mogadishu time, heavily armed security forces operating in
Bakara Market forcefully entered the premises of the Radio Station and
ordered all staff to come down from their building, according to the
management of the Radio. The security forces, subsequently, commanded
the Radio Director Ja'far Kuukay and head of its Programmes Abdirahman
Yusuf, publicly known Al-Adala, to go with them. Although Shabelle staff
were released, they were informed by the commander of the army that their
station is closed, Chairperson of Shabelle Radio Abdimalik Yusuf told
NUSOJ. The radio station, immediately, went off air as ordered.

The security forces of the Transitional Federal Government did not cite the
reasons behind their closure. But the Radio Shabelle journalists believe that
their professional and independent stance caused the closure.

"We denounce this illegal action from security forces which silenced today
Radio Shabelle" said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. "We
appeal to Transitional Government to allow Radio Shabelle to resume its
operations because of the important community service function it performs
in serving the news and information needs of the people".

Radio Shabelle and its journalists experienced gross violations of their
professional freedoms and rights, according to the records of the National
Union of Somali Journalists. Apart from continuous threats and terror acts
against its employees, its acting Chairperson Bashir Nur Gedi was recently
assassinated at his home in Mogadishu.

"Somalia became the worst country for press freedom and security of
journalists in Africa and the second most dangerous place for journalists in
the world after Iraq, because political groups do not like the Somali media's
role of disseminating useful, impartial and objective information to the
public"
Omar Faruk added.

"Since this is blatant violation of international law that severely restricts
the
Somali people's access to information, an internationally-recognized human
right, we call upon the international community to immediately intervene and
end ongoing grave violations of press freedom" Omar said. "We again
inform the Transitional Federal Government that it has international
obligation to protect and respect journalists by allowing them to freely seek,
receive, and impart information without fear of their safety'.

Somalia.- El Gobierno somal? cierra una emisora de radio independiente en
Mogadiscio acus?ndola de antigubernamental
http://www.europapress.es/00069/20071112174359/somalia-gobierno-somali-cierra-emisora-radio-independiente-mogadiscio-acusandola-antigubernamental.html

MADRID, 12 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -
No
