**CONGO DR (non). 9525, Radio Okapi, *0700-0758*, Nov 22, What
is going on here? I tune in to hear Star Radio to Liberia & I hear
Radio Okapi to Congo DR instead. Is this an error in programming or a
permanent change. Needs further checking. Via Ascension I assume.
Sign on with "Okapi" jingles & talk in French & vernacular. Many "Okapi"
jingles & mentions of Congo throughout programming.
CTN programming to Sierra Leone at 0730 with English CTN news at
0730 and later back into vernacular. "CTN" ID at 0758 & off. Good at
sign on but fair to poor in noisy conditions by 0730. (Brian Alexander, PA)

Hi all!

A little bit more researching made me discover the
decisive probe to demonstrate that 711 is (as ever
was!) the La?youne station placed (as ever was!) in
La?youne. And, as a collateral damage, the discovering
of no MW transmitter actually in Dakhla, listed
erroneously as La?youne (864, 7.5kw). I have found
this information in the own Radio Dakhla web pages,
hidden in the most unexpected place... inside the
Radio Laayoune site!. In this place you can read: "Les
In English (my own
traslation): "The programs of the Radiodif. Regionale
de Dakhla can be caught from the transmitting antenna
of the Radiodif. Regionale de Laayoune placed at
Foum-El Oued in the frequency of 711 AM and from
Dakhla in the frequency of 91.8 FM". I have not
written this but Mr. Ahmed Haiba Ouaiah, "le Directeur
de Radio Dakhla". So, Radio La?youne gives some
antenna time to Radio Dakhla probably because its lack
of MW transmitter to cover its whole area and the FM
covering only Dakhla city.

http://www.radiolaayoune.ma/Radiodakhla/index.html

"...?tablie ? Foum-El Oued..." but, where is this
place?... Google search:

--"...Foum el Oued is the best place to go swimming
if you live in Laayoune..."

I hope that this will be sufficient to demonstrate
that the SNRT tx. on 711 kHz is the one of Radio
La?youne located where it was always, in La?youne or
its environs.
(in 1967: AOE EAJ203 13W12, 27N10, according ITU "Int.
Freq. List").

BBC Monitoring confirms jamming to Ethiopia
http://www.biddho.com/content/view/501/29/lang,english/
Tuesday, 20 November 2007

BBC Monitoring (BBCM) can confirm that two major Western broadcasters
are suffering consistent jamming of their transmissions to Ethiopia. Jamming
is deliberate interference aimed at preventing the target broadcast from
being heard. The standard technique is to transmit an irritating noise or
continuous music on the same channel as the target.

In the latest media development to hit the Horn of Africa, the scene of
numerous "radio wars" over the past quarter-century, shortwave broadcasts
from Washington-based Voice of America (VOA) and Germany?s Deutsche
Welle (DW) are now being jammed.

In both cases, the target of the jamming is radio programmes in Amharic,
the lingua franca and main official language of Ethiopia. VOA is also
suffering jamming of another of its regional language services. The
deliberate interference appears to have started in the first half of this
month,
possibly on or around 12 November.

VOA and Cologne-based DW are funded by the US and German
governments to broadcast radio and TV programmes to foreign audiences.
The moves against the VOA and DW follow intensification by Ethiopia of its
jamming of broadcasts from neighbouring Eritrea. The jamming of Eritrean
state radio, the latest episode of which began in summer 2007, was stepped
up in late September and early October, BBCM observed at the time.

Details of the jammed broadcasts

The VOA?s daily one-hour (1800-1900 gmt) service in Amharic is now being
jammed. According to the opposition website Ethiopian Review -
www.ethiopianreview.com - the jamming of VOA began on 12 November.
BBCM observations have confirmed the presence of jamming signals on at
least three of the five frequencies used by the VOA. The direction whence
the jamming originates (established by the use of directional aerials) is
consistent with the signals being transmitted from within Ethiopia.

VOA currently uses 9320, 9860, 11675, 11905 and 13870 kHz for its
Amharic service. The service is not streamed on the Internet, but audio of
recent broadcasts is available at www.voanews.com/horn.

On 19 November, VOA?s service in another major Ethiopian language,
Oromo, was also observed to be jammed. VOA?s Oromo service broadcasts
at 1730-1800 gmt, immediately before the Amharic transmission and on the
same frequencies.

DW?s daily one-hour (1400-1500 gmt) service in Amharic is also being
jammed. Noise interference has been observed on two of DW?s shortwave
frequencies (11645 and 15640 kHz). DW recently added a third frequency
(15660 kHz). At the start of its Amharic programme on 19 November it
announced that this had been done in response to the jamming. The lead
item in the news bulletin that followed was that the Ethiopian government
had conducted air raids on villages in the Ogaden region in the southeast of
the country. DW maintains a multimedia website for its Amharic service at
www2.dw-world.de/amharic.

Opposition broadcasts

Ethiopia has also jammed various private opposition radio broadcasts. The
country has been targeted for many years by such operators, which hire
airtime (generally an hour a day or on certain days of the week) from
commercial shortwave transmission facilities, including those based in
Germany and the former Soviet Union. The number and identity of such
broadcasts, and their schedules, often varies, depending on the availability
of funds to hire shortwave airtime. Eritrea is also targeted by private
opposition shortwave stations.

Concept, from the Association for International Broadcasters.

The station was announced as joint winners with France 24 for the most
creative marketing concept.

"SW Radio Africa?s use of SMS text messaging to beat the censors enables
the station to reach an audience under the most difficult censorship
conditions," the AIB said yesterday.

Gerry Jackson, the founder of the station which is run by former radio
personalities from Zimbabwe and exiled journalists, said: "This Media
Excellence Award was given to us for our sms campaign, where we send
news headlines into Zimbabwe on a daily basis via mobile phone text
messages."

Jackson said everyone at the station was thrilled by the award.

"We would like to thank our supporters and friends and to share this award
with all of them," she said.

The radio station is one the three independent radio stations that beam into
Zimbabwe on a daily basis from overseas due to the country?s draconian
media laws that have seen the shrinking of media space.

There are no independent or private broadcasting stations in Zimbabwe.

The AIB is the industry association for all sectors of international
broadcasting. It's membership is global and includes television and radio
broadcasters, satellite operators, transmission companies, technology
providers and consultants.

Judges for the 2007 awards were drawn from media companies around the
world.

France 24?s got the award for its launch campaign, which AIB says was
"very well thought through and well executed, with a unique use of animation
to bring in younger viewers".

Bloomberg Television was named AIB?s International channel of the year -
television for "consistently high quality and punching above its weight,
successfully marrying specialist material with more mainstream coverage of
news and current affairs".

Radio New Zealand International is the International station of the year
because it "proved it has the ability, clarity of vision and resources to
deliver
something that?s valued by audiences throughout the
region".________________________

Hello Eike and All,
As I type I'm listening to a similar broadcast of an
Arab type station mixed up with at least one other station, language unknown on
11965 KHz @ 2126 UTC on November 21, 2007. I can hear Arab style music, male
and female announcers, stations unknown so far but haven't checked any
schedules yet. Severe fading with weak to strong signals and a het which is
understandable due to multiple stations.

Hello DXers,
I can still copy the unid Arab station on 11965 KHZ @ 2208
UTC. During one of the "fade ups" I could copy what sounded like Spanish with
male and female announcers and music in with the mix of multiple stations. I
checked EIBI and could not find any Arab speaking stations on this frequency at
the time of my last post.

Hello DXers,
The upcoming test of WCHX is going to be real tough for me,
the las two nights I've tuned up on 780 KHZ and WBBM in Chicago is blasting and
covering everything from my QTH near Pittsburgh, Pa. No matter how I turn my
loop antenna I can't null Chicago out. I'll not give up, if I have to I'll
drive my car to the highest point around here that I can find and keep
repositioning it and maybe get results that way. Good luck to all participants!

JM,

Desde hace muchos a?os, WWCR (no WEWN) cuenta con una hora en espa?ol de lunes
a viernes 4 a 5 pm hora central.
73, Glenn
