Bolivia, 5996.29, Radio Loyola, 1004-1020 With a very weak signal that's
struggling with
all of the splatter, noted a male in what seemed to be Spanish language
comments.
Although the frequency was loaded with interference, it was still possible to
pull Radio Loyola
out of the splatter because of the announcer's tonal quality. Does that sound
correct?
Anyway, the "window" for Bolivia gradually closed after 1020 UTC, and all of
those "tiny voices"
on this band caused by the splatter, began to smother this spot on the dial.
(Chuck Bolland,
January 17, 2008)

Peru, 4746.80, Radio Huanta Dos Mil, 1030-1040 With music initially, noted a
female and male
in live Spanish Comments at 1030. It was very difficult to focus in on the
details with the CODAR
signal pinging thru my earphones every second, creating a "electronic
headache". The comments
continued during the period. The signal was fair with QRM. (Chuck Bolland,
January 17, 2008)

Peru, 4775, Radio Tarma, 1037-1050, In here with Huaynos music. At 1038, male
comments
in Spanish language giving TC and ID. This occurs while the music is still
playing. The CODAR
is still present on this frequency, and the pain in my temples is gradually
rotating to my frontal lope.
Thus I am nudged into tuning to another target. Tarma's signal improved at
1040 from fair to good. (Chuck Bolland, January 17, 2008)

Peru, 4826.46, Radio Sicuani, 1042-1100, Noted a male in Spanish Language
comments. Hearing
the male mention "Lima" every once in a while. During his comments, he
mentions "Colombia"
and "Venezuela" too, so I am thinking he's presenting the news. Canned
promos/ADs at 1050.
Heard an ID in there too as, "Radio Sicuani". Although CODAR can be heard, it's
not exactly
on 4826.46 KHz making listening less painful. Radio Sicuani was at a fair
level. (Chuck
Bolland, January 17, 2008)

Peru, 4834.90, Radio Maranon, 1053-1103, In here with a good signal, as a
male w/live comments
in Spanish language. At 1056, promos and ADs presented just for a few
moments. Male back
with live conversation with a second male at 1058 UTC. I am hearing place
names here too. I
heard "Peru" (obvisouly) and "Venezuela". Too bad I can't keep up with the
Spanish. At 1103
signal drops off of the air. I wait around for a few minuted, but it doesn't
return.  While
the station was on the air, it was at a good level as was CODAR. (Chuck
Bolland, Janaury 17, 2008)

Pacific Asian Log Radio Guide
New 2008 Mediumwave Edition

The first update for 2008 of this free guide is now online at
www.radioheritage.net and includes complete revisions for a number of
countries.

The radio guide lists thousands of operating AM radio stations across
the entire region from Afghanistan to Alaska, China, Japan,
Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and Hawaii.

Easy to use, with online search and downloadable versions. Stations
can be found by country or frequency for example. Data includes hours
of operation, program formats, transmitter power and much more.

According to the Radio Heritage Foundation [www.radioheritage.net],
the largest number of currently listed AM transmitters are located in
China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines.

Endangered AM Radio Watchlist

Meanwhile, a growing number of countries are now on the Radio
Heritage Foundation's Endangered AM Radio Watchlist, having just one
mediumwave station known to be on air.

These countries are American Samoa, Diego Garcia [British Indian
Ocean Territory], Christmas Island [Indian Ocean], Cook Islands,
French Polynesia, Kiribati, Macau, Malaysia [West], Maldives,
Myanmar, Norfolk Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau and Tonga.

In the last year or so, the following countries across the region
have ceased broadcasting on mediumwave: Easter Island, Cocos
[Keeling] Islands, Lord Howe Island, Nauru, Tuvalu and Wallis et
Futuna.

All of these countries now broadcast only on FM. As a result of this
major shift to FM radio across the region, the first in a new series
of Asia and Pacific FM Radio Guides will be launched at
www.radioheritage.net in the coming weeks. We suggest you regularly
check the site for these and other new content.

Bruce Portzer's Pacific Asian Log Radio Guide is currently available
in both updated mediumwave and shortwave versions at
www.radioheritage.net.

Pacific Island Public Radio
RNZI Mailbox documentary January 21

The latest Radio Heritage Foundation documentary on Radio New Zealand
International [RNZI] looks at the impending sale of government owned
SBC Samoa and considers its impact on local public radio in Samoa.

Previous privatization examples include Radio Cook Islands and WVUV
American Samoa. How have these stations fared since? What are the FM
radio options that listeners in Apia, Pago Pago and Avarua currently
enjoy.

Other broadcasters from outside the region, such as Radio China
International and Radio Australia, are now opening commercial free FM
relay stations across the region. Are the days of locally funded and
operated public radio stations in the islands numbered?

Currently, the 540 AM signal of SBC1 provides cyclone warnings for a
wide arc of islands including the two Samoas, Niue and Tokelau. With
the station being sold, will this vital emergency service continue or
be closed down to save costs?

Listen to Mailbox on RNZI on Monday January 21 as David Ricquish of
the Radio Heritage Foundation explores some of the issues. Visit
www.rnzi.com for shortwave frequencies and times, and to download an
audio on demand version of the program that will be available online
for four weeks from January 21.

For more information about broadcasting in the two Samoas, Cook
Islands and Tokelau, visit www.radioheritage.net. An online version
of the program script along with exclusive images of Samoan radio
will also be available from later in January at www.radioheritage.net.

Updated versions of the full Pacific Asian Log Radio Guides for
Mediumwave and Shortwave stations across the region are also
available, and a new series of Pacific Radio Guides including all FM
stations in the region will be available shortly at
www.radioheritage.net.
