Well no point in sticking around. Compared to last night, conditions are
dismal. Tonight, 6792.5 is heard at 20 dB at best above the noise floor, with
the moon bounce still audible weakly most times. Sounds a lot like the 2nd
hour did on 7 megs last night. I don't think I'll bother to stick around for
the next hour. I did notice some SSB interference a few minutes after the
start of the broadcast. Otherwise, just mostly a lot of noise and poor
propagation tonight.....Walt in Victoria.

HAARP VIDEOCLIP

Here the reception on 7407,5 KHz was not good with a lot of QRN & QSB but for
someone intersted the short videoclip of reception is available at:

Dear Bj?rn,
I didn't hear anything yesterday 19th January except presumed Morocco with
Koran at 2357, very weak. The station I had last spring was very strong here
and did not have any talk at all, not even at TOH. I suspect that the
station you heard now could be Morocco after all. Maybe you have an audio
clip of the speech part so we could try to find someone to recognise the
language? The Mekele project may have been delayed still further.

Dear friends,
On February 16th 2007 I heard an African station on 1044 kHz, playing HoA
music. Although never confirmed by the station itself, several DX-ers found
out that I had heard the new Mekele station in Ethopia. In the 2008 edition
of WRTH there is a note about the station starting in January 2008.
Yesterday night, January 18th 2008, I heard again a station with exactly the
same programming style on 1044 kHz, lively HoA music and lots of
"phone-ins", at 21.50-later on, many times with better reception than the
German MDR Info on the same frequency. At 22.00 there was a news bulletin in
presumed Amharic. I believe that the station in Mekele is now on with
regular programming. The conditions towards Africa were generally good,
because I earlier in the evening also heard Radio Kahuzi on 6210 kHz for the
first time.

Morocco and Ethiopia are at widely divergent angles from Sweden. Surely a bit
of direxion-finding can rule out one or the other. Hmmm, seems like I pointed
this out before... 73, Glenn

Hi all,
Thanks for trying to help me with this UNID broadcaster. Yes, Glenn, I believe
that you have said it before. I am quite sure that it is the same station that
I heard last February = one year ago. To Mauno: I haven't got any electronic
equipment like Mp3, but an oldfashioned cassette recorder, where parts of the
broadcast has been recorded by me. I haven't been able to check any details
yet, because the connection to the suitable earphone are broken. I hope to be
able to listen to the cassette at the end of the coming week. If there is
anyhting useful I'll send it to you, ordinary posted. OK? Maybe Max's recording
is better and I look forward to get an audio-file, which I am able to listen to
via my computer.
So, maybe together we can solve this mystery, which seems as mysterious as it
was one year ago. The theories are many - I hope there will be only one
solution, the correct one!
73 from Bj?rn

Hallo - regarding HAARP, I succeeded only in receiving the signal on both
days, and on both frequencies by refraction of the ionosphere, rather than
by reflection of the moon. I wrote a seven-paged reception report with some

RT? plans to switch off mediumwave on 24 March:
(January 19th, 2008)

Irish public broadcaster RT? plans to axe Radio
1?s mediumwave service on 24 March. RT? believes
the transmission cost can no longer be justified,
since the content is now available elsewhere. The
mediumwave service, on 567 kHz, shares almost all
its content with the FM version of Radio 1,
except for Sunday religious services and a
midweek soccer game. But the decision has been
criticised by rural listener and politicians.

There is to be a public information campaign
ahead of the switch-off date. This will highlight
the fact that the full Radio 1 mediumwave service
will remain available on longwave (252 kHz). It
is also available on the Sky Digital platform.
RT? is also talking to charities about providing
subsidised radios for those who don?t have sets with FM or longwave.

The station?s research shows that one in ten
radio listeners use the mediumwave version of
Radio 1, with the service particularly popular
with the elderly and those living in remote areas.

Fine Gael communications spokesman Simon Coveney
said shutting down mediumwave transmissions has
implications for people in rural parts of the
country and at sea. ?This is a public service
broadcaster and this shouldn?t be abandoned,? he said.

Labour communications and marine spokesman
Michael McCarthy said the decision would have the
biggest implications for fishermen working 50 or
100 miles off the coast and relying on the
broadcasts for weather reports and for farmers.

BBC's "viral" game adds virtual dimension to presence at Africa Cup of Nations:

(17 Jan, 2008)

Just as football lovers across Africa rally
around their national teams ahead of the Africa
Cup of Nations 2008 in Ghana, the BBC has
launched a virtual game in which fans can "play"
for their favourite team ? and "win" a cyber-tournament.
Farayi Mungazi's Penalty Shootout is an online
game commentated by the popular presenter of the
BBC World Service flagship African sports programme, Fast Track.
It is available at
bbcworldservice.com/penaltyshootout from Thursday
17 January and will culminate on the day of the
final of Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday 10 February.
The rules of Farayi Mungazi's Penalty Shootout
are simple. Each player has to save as many
penalties as possible. In this viral game it is
also important for players to spread the word
among supporters of their favourite team as their
total scores will be added to the global league table.
The more penalties online players save for their
team, the more chances there are for the team to
win the virtual tournament. There are no prizes,
but there will be a virtual cup for the most
successful team, which will be announced.
Farayi Mungazi says: "This is a first for the
BBC, and I am thrilled to be fronting Farayi
Mungazi's Penalty Shootout. Football fans are
passionate about the game and I know they are
going to love this virtual competition.
"Just as 16 teams from across the continent
battle it out in Ghana for Africa Cup of Nations
2008, lovers of the beautiful game can also
support their teams in the BBC's cyber-contest. I
look forward to a great tournament."
Farayi Mungazi's Penalty Shootout also features
on the social networking site, Facebook. A
dedicated page enables members to play for their
country, join in daily discussions about the
games, upload pictures and videos and encourage
their friends to play the game. They also can
view the league table updated daily.
The BBC will bring its most extensive coverage of
Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations to millions of
football fans across Africa and the world.
A special joint broadcast on Friday 18 January
between BBC World Service's two flagship
programmes, The World Today and Network Africa,
will launch the three weeks of BBC coverage which
will include live game commentary and in-depth
analysis by the BBC's best football experts, key
interviews, up-to-the-minute news and special features.
Listeners will be able to follow Ghana 2008 in
Arabic, English, French, Hausa, Kinyarwanda,
Kirundi, Portuguese, Somali and Swahili.
Further information, minute-by-minute text and
audio coverage and podcasts will also be
available at bbcworldservice.com/africanfootball.

BOLIVIA 4732 R. Universitaria (pres.) 1026 LA Pop. No anmnts noted and
dropped way down after 1040 not to recover. No RTTY this morning. (16
Jan.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3290 R. Central 1106 nx in PD by M anncr. 1109 studio M
anncr but audio too low to copy, and into "Take Me Home, Country Road" by
John Denver. One or two other Top 40-like songs, but all the rest were
Island Pops. 1157 M anncr w/final anmnt including what sounded like a ment
of NBC, but couldn't really copy. Voice anmnts were too weak. 1158 instru.
NA and off. Signal faded slightly after 1130. Was hoping to get a nice
recording of s/off. (16 Jan.)

BOLIVIA 4732 R. Universitaria (pres.) 0038 LA ballad at t/in mixing with
and slightly overtop the RTTY. 0040 M brief voice-over anmnt. Ad block
0050, then long tlk by live M anncr w/what sounded like a ment of Pando.
Certainly sounded like an ID at 0157 and ment of ".de la noche". Still
going after 0200. Seems to play more ballads than Pops. Best signal so far
from this one and CODAR not that much of a problem. (18 Jan.)

PERU 3329.61 Ondas del Huallaga 1103-1107 ad block, all w/excited tlk and
also SFX. 1107 into mx. Didn't stick w/this as I wanted to record 4732
Universitaria, so no ID. (18 Jan.)

BOLIVIA 4732 R. Universitaria 1107 Tuned in in the middle of a full
canned ID by M in echo ".informativo, en ?? 97.9 en Frecuencia
Modulada.Universitaria..los Pando". Deadair, then soft Rom. Ballad. 1110
live W anncr, then what sounded like a LA Rap song w/just drum machine and
group of men 'singing' so to speak. 1115 into LA Dance song, then another
ballad at 1118. Another very brief anmnt at 1126 but it was too far gone by
then. Noticed that the RTTY isn't on in the mornings, so that's the best
time to log this. Glad to finally get this one!! (18 Jan.)

Once again the MUF was only 5 mhz this morning. S.F. was 71, A Index was 9,
and K Index was 3. Very poor conditions. (20 Jan.)

MOON 7407.5 CW HAARP (HF Active Auroral Research Program) 0730+ Could
(weakly) hear the CW tone at :01-:02 (direct xmsn), followed by less than a
second of silence and then a (stronger) echo (return bounce) from :03 to
:04. The silence between the signal return signal and the start of the next
direct transmission seemed just a little longer than the split second
between the direct transmission and the return. Both were not very strong
and fading was a bit of a problem. (20 Jan.)

BRAZIL 3254.91 R. Educadora 6 de Agosto (pres.) 1027-1032 All tlk by M
anncr in PT over BoH, tuned out briefly, and when I returned a minute later
they were into ZY mx. Decent signal at t/in but fading. Wish I would have
been there at s/on. (20 Jan.)

PERU 6173.84 R. Tawantinsuyo (pres) 1033 end of OA mx, then M anncr w/TC
3 min. slow twice and short anmnt in pres. Aymara, then back to campo mx.
More anmnts at 1036 and 1039 but way too much adjacent slop QRM. Beautiful
Harp mx at 1041. 1044 another anmnt including TC again 3 min. slow. When
the adjacent stn was playing mx, it was impossible to copy. Too much QRM
after 1056. (20 Jan.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3315 R. Manus 1240-1344 Pop ballad at t/in, then "You're
My Inspiration" by Chicago. 1244 M in PD, ment of Papua New Guinea. More
Pop mx w/M anncr host. 1258 M anncr again, TC, ment of NBC and Papua New
Guinea. Usual bird call then native mx signature, and into NBC EG nx by M
to 1303, then immediately back to mx w/oldie-sounding song. Surprised that
this continued. Different M anncr at 1316, so maybe a continuation of the
NBC relay. Definitely still there at 1344, and what sounded like strains of
audio still at 1358 and 1400 which would be pretty decent considering it was
almost an hour and a half after sunrise on 90 meters. (20 Jan.)

HAARP Test

Heard the test signal at 0249 EST on 7.4 mc. on 21 January 2008. The signal was
_VERY_ weak with lots of QRM from Radio Bulgaria. Have no idea if it was from
HAARP or the reflection signal.

Thought I listen for the full hour I only heard a small part of the test around
0240 EST.

The Drake R-4C is a ham band only receiver, so it does not cover the 6.5 to
7.0mc part of the short-wave spectrum, thus making it just a little bit hard to
hear the test on the 6.7 mc frequency. (Because I never bought the crystal for
that frequency range.)

My antenna is a home made 40 meter inverted V, with the apex height of 20 feet.
