Peru, 4826.50, Radio Sicuani, 1048-1105 Noted a male and female in
Spanish Comments thru the top of the hour. CODAR continues to
interfere with Sicuani's signal which was poor. (Chuck Bolland, February
10, 2008)
Peru, 4834.90, Radio Maranon, 1101-1115, Noted music at tune-in.
At 1106 canned promo over music. Signal was good this morning.
(Chuck Bolland, February 10, 2008)
Peru, 4746.86, Radio Huanta Dos Mil,(pres) 1116-1130 Haven't heard this
station in
a couple of weeks. Don't know if they have been off the air or just signing
on
later? They weren't up during the 1000 UTC hour. Anyway, noted a male in
Spanish comments at tune-in. Male continues to comment. At 1122 music
presented briefly. Keep hearing the place names as, "Lima" and "Peru". No
ID
heard before the signal collapsed. Signal was fair to poor. (Chuck
Bolland, February 10, 2008)

For what it's worth, when I worked on Media Network one of the RNW
technicians told me that he a special setting for my voice. When comparing
the sound of my recorded voice when he was on duty to the sound when working
with other technicians, there was a distinct improvement.
I remember, too, visiting TWR Bonaire (Glenn was on the same visit) when
they demonstrated how the sound processing could be asdjusted from telephone
quality to nearly hifi according to what material they were broadcasting.
Unfortunately, too many international broadcasters (and many domestic ones)
pay scant attention to audio quality.

If he were not referring to a ``self-proclaimed expert`` or ``guru``, I
would
think he was talking about me, since I have made just such comments about
phoning-in! But I have never proclaimed myself to be any such thing. Where
would he get that idea?
OK, tnx for the explanation, but then other announcers` voices must be
processed very differently since they are of higher fidelity, which with
RHC`s
huge signals is certainly a benefit rather than a detriment (Glenn Hauser,

** AFGHANISTAN [non]. An mp3 file of R. Solh music, 29 minutes, 6836 kb, 32
kbps, 22 kHz, recorded in late January at 1419-1459 UT on 15265 via UK, with
announcements removed, is now available for all to enjoy at
http://www.w4uvh.net/sohl0801.mp3 If anyone can identify any of the music,
please let us know as it would be nice to obtain CD quality recordings of it.
The second piece is partly in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** EGYPT. Altho I was hearing R. Cairo via ABZ site on 6290 some minutes before
2400 UT Feb 9 as I tuned by, at 0005 Feb 10 I found a strong carrier, but
extremely weak and distorted modulation on 6225, nothing on 6290. 0000 is when
the Arabic service is scheduled to switch 6290 from ABZ to ABS site, the latter
with its terrible modulation, as we have noted before, and also with a
considerable overlap between the two sites. This time on 6225, there was some
yelling and applause, but the modulation so weak and distorted I could not even
be sure of language, let alone pull a definite ID, but circumstantially it
appears that Cairo has moved from 6290 to 6225 for the service after 0000,
which remains a total waste. We shall hear subsequently whether this was a
mistake, fluke, or permanent change (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. R. Educaci?n, 6185, 0001 Feb 10, sign-on as SW station XEPPM on
6185, with current date and time, power 10 kW, live announcement in Spanish,
and then the same in English --- a good time for monolinguals to DX them tho
they occasionally throw in English IDs elsewhen. It`s a shame they don`t put a
little more effort into some real English programming.
Show following sounded like ``Su casa y otros viajes`` or was it ``carta`` but
neither makes much sense. Program schedule
http://www.radioeducacion.edu.mx/carta_programa.pdf does not match, just
showing ``RFI`` at 6 pm Saturday. Not clear if besides the sign-on, the SW
programming is partially or totally identical now to MW 1060 XEEP, but no sign
of a separate SW sked on the website.
Nor can I any longer find detailed playlists minute by minute they used to have
on website bookmarked at http://www.radioeducacion.edu.mx/HojaProg1.html nor
any trace of it on the site map, tho they have added a lot of text material and
the latest fad, podcasts. Maybe playlists are now for Registered Users only?
But no explanation of what benefits RU`s get! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** VENEZUELA [non]. Sunday Feb 10 made my habitual check for ``Al?,
Presidente`` frequencies via Cuba, vs mainstream RHC programming. At 1426 found
the A,P lead-in show from RHC, ``Mundo Siete``, week in review, both on 11680
and 11670! 11670 was much weaker than 11680, and the two were out of synch, so
from two different transmitter sites. Meanwhile, 11875, which had been one of
the A,P Sunday-only channels, was missing, with only a weak WEWN audible.
Apparently, RHC finally got our message that the 14-15 hour was colliding with
WEWN and moved that transmitter to 11680. However, at 1514 recheck, 11875 was
on, after WEWN had left. I wonder if they announce such a frequency change
around 1500? A,P also on // 13750 very strong, making a reverb with 11680. Also
on 13680, but barely detectable in skirts of CRI via Sackville 13675. At 1456,
17750 was starting to fade in with WYFR dominating, trace of Cuba.
Meanwhile, mainstream RHC was as usual on 11760, 11805 and 12000 around 1430,
closing around 1500; I noticed that 11805 was off the air before the others had
finished.
I was already hearing the blustery voice of Hugo Ch?vez Fr?as at 1435, so
apparently he was rarin` to go. His timezone change may have affected his
habitual startup time, tho it would logically be later in real time, not
earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

http://www.bohemia.cubaweb.cu/2008/02/06/historia/2-radio-rebelde.html
cercanas, no...
cubanos hab?an tenido que exiliarse.
extend?an hasta Argentina.

Audio file containing first male next female announcer mentioning "R. La Cruz

very short, 37 kbt, 7 seconds here:

Sometimes they mentions "Radiocomunicaci?n Roco" what could generates doubt,
and should sounds like "Radio...Co", "Radio Eco". Radiocomunicaci?n Roco maybe
is the name of the owner of R. La Cruz del Sur.

Greetngs,
After our storms this Winter, especially the big one in early December,
the Eastern beverage got busted up and it took me several weeks to
finally get it back up. It was too cold and wet to solder the splices so
I just twisted the splices and taped then up for the time being. I got
out yesterday and soldered two splices, as we were up into the 50s F, so
my little butane soldering pencil worked okey, but there was a wind, so
keeping it lit was not always easy. I was thinking of buying another 250
feet of outdoor extention cord to give me 500 feet total. With that, I
would have enough to reach the other splices that aren't soldered on the
beverage. I have a Radio Shack soldering gun (100/140 watts). Would the
soldering gun work running it through that much extention cord? If so,
would it harm the transformer in the gun? I fiqure a A/C soldering
pencil would not be harmed as there is no tranformer, but I don't have
A/C soldering pencil that has much wattage. The gun would work better.
With a pencil, if the voltage dropped too low the pencil would not get
hot enough, but with the transforer in the gun, I have no clue. Does
anyone know? If running 500 feet of extention cord would work, I will go
buy another 250 feet. I have run the soldering gun through 200 feet of
cord and that worked ok. I also have a deep cycle 12V battery I could
use with an 120v inverter, but thing weighs 70 pounds and not that easy
to carry. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Patrick

Patrick,
If you need to solder wire in cold weather, use a propane torch. A torch is
best suited to uninsulated stranded copper wire, as the heat will cause the
insulation on typical "zip cord" extension wire to melt back on either side
of the spice - but it will deliver enough heat to make a perfect solder
joint in just seconds - even if the ambient temps are quite cold. Use rather
heavy gauge rosin-core solder, and set the flame as low as possible. It's
best to do it when the winds are calm.
I constructed a 300-foot horizontal loop that had six spices - all of which
were soldered in this fashion. It has held up perfectly through 4
northeastern winters.

Dear amigo:
After running many tests... we found out what may best be described as
an almost
optimum setting of the audio frequency response curve that will provide my
listeners with the best possible audio ?punch?, that is audio that will
get trough
interference of all kinds...
As a bonus, if you remove the lower frequency segment of the audio ,
that is from
30 to 250 Hertz, your transmitter won?t waste power modulating that segment
of the audio spectrum that provides, according to psychologists and
audiologists,
practically no useful information for the human to decode voice.
Although of less significance, it is also a good idea to introduce a
high frequency
cut with a 12 or 18 dB per octave slope after 2.7 kilohertz or so...
I have heard my shows on short wave under the most difficult reception
conditions
and the programs came in a lot better than the other shows recorded with
the ?standard?studio quality.
I am sure that you are aware that the typical short wave broadcast
transmitter?s
audio frequency response curve starts around 50 Hertz and ends quite
abruptly
at around 4.5 kiloHertz with a very steep slope that is required in
order to comply
with the channel separation requirements...
The studio microphones, audio mixers, master control program amplifiers,
fiber optic
coders and decoders, STLs etc. are alway easily capable of handling a
minimum
bandwidth of between 20 and 15,000 Hertz... while the short wave transmitter
by its own nature is only cable of responding from about 50 to 4500
Hertz... and
if you really want to be heard under the most difficult reception
conditions, your
voice modulation should be restricted to the range between 250 and 3000
Hertz or
so...

Dear amigo Bob Chandler VE3SRE has hit the bullseye right in the middle !!!
After several years of doing Dxers Unlimited, one day the former station
chief
engineer and now senior technical advisor Luis Pruna Amer I.E. and
your?s truly
were talking about the people who listened to my show... Then we ask for
help
from the station?s correspondence department, and Irma Armas the head of the
English section came out with the surprising result that Dxers Unlimited
had been
heard and reported from 162 ?DX entitities?of the 192 that have been
reported
to Radio Habana Cuba until that time ( this happened about 5 years ago
or so )
Then Pruna and yours truly agreed to optimize the audio frequency
response curve
for not only voice, but specifically to provide optimum response to my
voice.
We ran many tests using an audio frequency spectrum analyzer , and ended
up with
a pretty nice audio that really punches trough ... The curve cuts down fast
below 250 Hertz, and provides a boost of about 6 dB between 500 and 1500
Hertz
then it is again flat up to 2500 Hertz and from there it goes down with
a very steep
descent of 12 dB per octave at first and then 18 dB per octave later.
THIS IS NOT HI-FI !!! But as Bob Chandler has very well analyzed and brought
to our attention, that type of audio frequency curve shaping ( together
with the use
of a well designed and adjusted audio compressor ) will increase the
possibility of
reception of the program in areas where the signal to noise ratio is not of
the typical broadcast quality ( no less than 26 dB signal to noise ratio
minimm ).
I remember when we used the old Siemens and RFT transmitters for
broadcasting
Radio Havana Cuba on single side band, that the 10 kiloWatts PEP Siemens
provided the coverage of a 100 kiloWatt AM transmitter !!!.
So, although Dxers Unlimited doesn?t make use of the full potential
quality of the
station?s studios. STL?s , fiber optic links and transmitters... I do
intend to keep
using the ?special for Arnie?s voice?frequency response curve !!!
