I'm getting the SIBC at fair level now at 06:50 UTC on 9541.51 with an
improving signal since 06:30 tune-in. Not much more than threshold initially,
but now at fair level, although there's a bit too much local noise to make much
out from the transmission. Fun to watch the improving signal, though on the
Perseus SDR screen. Mostly music. Getting pretty close to good signal
strength (only S2 or S3 on the meter, though) at 06:55 UTC.......Walt Salmaniw,

Almost one third (31.7 per cent) of the UK's adult population have listened to
the radio via the internet, according to new research from Rajar.
According to a report in the New Media Edge, the third Rajar Measurement of
Internet Delivered Audio Services has revealed that 16.1 million people claim
to have listened to the radio via the internet compared with 14.5 million
people in May 2008.
The report, compiled in October this year, says that of this, 15 million listen
live and 13.5 million use a Listen Again service, with the majority tuning in
at home (89 per cent) while 21 per cent listen at work and six per cent listen
elsewhere.
The number of people to have used a Personalised Online Radio was 2.9 million,
up from 2.1 million in May. The survey also found 7.2 million people have
downloaded a podcast, up from six million in May with 4.1 million tuning in
weekly, up from 3.7 million in May and up 2.2 million year-on-year.
The average podcast user subscribes to 4.41 podcasts with comedy and music the
favourite genres. Some three quarters of users listen on their personal
computer and 78.7 per cent listen at home, while 65.7 per cent transfer them to
portable devices and 44.8 per cent listen in the car or on public transport.
Some 55 per cent of respondents would be interested in downloading podcasts
containing advertising if they were free. 33 per cent responded positively to
the idea of podcasts without adverts that had to be paid for, however just
three per cent of podcast listeners have ever paid for a podcast.
The report quotes Rajar research manager Christel Lacaze as saying that, "With
the increase in broadband internet access rising from 51 per cent of UK
households in 2007 to 56 per cent in 2008 and the high profile launch of BBC
iPlayer, listening to the radio has never been a more attractive proposition.
The survey was conducted during October 2008 by Ipsos MORI and is based on the
responses of 1,142 respondents.

** CANADA. CHU has started announcing the upcoming frequency change from 7335
to 7850, heard on 7335 Dec 11 at 0723:15 in French, 0724:15 in English,
alternating from minute to minute; and the pips are deleted for the duration of
each brief message, referring to http://nrc.gc.ca/inms which leads to this as
already quoted in DXLD:
http://inms-ienm.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/common_files/stories/chu/communique_e.pdf
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. RHC, 12000, Dec 11 at 1429 referring to webcast via
http://www.radiohc.cu said that programming is repeated ``integramente`` at
1500-1900. That`s when SW is off the air, except when they forget to turn off
the transmitters at 1500 sharp. At 1453 when I happened to be tuned to 15120,
plugging the date`s Mesa Redonda show at 6:30 pm = 2330 UT on 9820, 6000, which
would be about --- human rights! What chutzpah! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** LIBYA. V. of Africa, 11860, Dec 10 at 1926 in African language, music, fair.
Scheduled 19-20 in Hausa due south from Sabrata (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** MEXICO [and non]. Still trying to hear some audio from XEQM, to tell whether
it is really in Maya now during daytime, but all I can detect is a het from
6104.8 against 6105.0 stations: Dec 11 until 1459:30 VOA Chinese closing, but
Tinang carrier seemed to stay on; then I heard CRI IS, which is opening in
Russian, and VOA opening Uzbek via Tinian, both much weaker than Tinang had
been, but still way too much for M?rida (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U K [non]. For the fourth day in a row, BBCWS in English on 9625, Dec 11 at
1423 under CBC Northern, and easily confirmed as such by // 5975 BBCWS via
Thailand. Again there is a SAH of about 3 Hz, and possibly RSA is in the mix
too. Now we have a VTC schedule update showing that it`s Cyprus with BBCWS at
14-15, 64 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [and non]. 15580 open carrier, Dec 11 at 1450-1458* and covering up a
weaker signal, i.e. VOA S?o Tom? blocked by VOA Greenville-B, which doesn`t
modulate on this frequency until 1700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** VENEZUELA [non]. RNV via Cuba, 15290, Dec 10 at 1922 somebody other than
Ch?vez giving a speech but big hum; pause for some music without the hum, and
resume speech by Jesse Chac?n with hum. I should have paid more attention as he
was otherwise reported to have announced that RadioSur would begin in the first
quarter of `09 --- is that referring to their new SW facility under
construxion, or something else? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** ZANZIBAR. RTZ, 11735, good signal Dec 10 at 1927 with hilife music, but the
unstable transmitter warbling is getting worse. I was thinking they got a new
transmitter only a few years ago, but TDP shows the 50 kW Dole unit started in
1984y, http://www.tdp.info/tza.html so is TDP not up to date, or was the
transmitter refurbished? It was off the air for a considerable period (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Warm greetings to all of you !
While looking for Ecuador on 540, with the November 2004's Barry McLarnon
Ottawan reception in mind (although I'm silly to look after such stuff, as
Sotuh Americans are almost inexistent, even RCR-750 is unimpressive), I came
accross an interesting Spanish station giving a load of phone numbers and IDing
as Radio Cadena La Voz de la Victoria with live announcers... Is it a domestic
or a Latin America ? Is it a new slogan for Ecuador ? Also, I'm VERY happy
because it is not // any local spur from a multilingustic station such as 1280
or 1450 (mainly in arabic, but some spurs form it are picked up on a Venturer
clock radio with it's BROKEN ferrite bar antenne, ao who knows)... It is
clearly DX ! Seems like 540 is an interesting channel to watch out for those of
you, like me, chassing South American DX from eastern North America...
Any thoughts on "this weird bird" ?
May the good DX be with you !
