Repport from: Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu DX'ing from Pierrefonds-Roxboro /
Montreal's West Island using the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot for MW and the Sangean
CST-818 with the battery-powered PK's Magnetic LW loop for LW
Trans-Atlantic DX:
162 FRANCE France Inter, Allouis DEC 22 0205 - woman reading poems with a
dramatic voice, followed up by 1 or 2 FF electropop numbers, then a feature
about an African immigrant coming to Paris followed by corny African Jazz-Ethno
music, then talk about the true nature of coup?-d?call? (conteporary rhythmic
music originating from the Ivory Coast), mainly using major chords, though
using minor ones too at times) which puts you in a Trance without "un philtre
d'amour". Generally very good, but local computer-like QRM maked
understandibility partial especially during the poem reading when the signal
was slightly lower. In any event, best ever reception of this station ! The new
battery (which already weakened) definitely allowed the PK's Magnetic LW loop
to be the perfect choice ! +162 DEC 25 0005 - End of newscast, then into a
discussion w/ a religious zealot about what is the church's position on the
economical crisis which is shaking the Earth right now. Fair-good and liste!
nable in spite of some moderate growl, likely from a computer in the
neighborhood. Best reception was on 164 in AM Narrow Mode to avoid the
computer-QRM which was stronger around 161 kHz (Chiochiu-QC)
171 MAROCCO Medi Un, Nador DEC 22 0407 - about one hour later after getting
France-162, I had my best reception of these guys with broadcast announcement
in French (station's identity, frequency, etc.), probably talking about the
upcoming FF language px (this station is bilingual), but it was so chopped...
Poor-fair with severe computer-like QRM. I see old repports about the GWEN,
what the Groundwave Emergency Network is all about ? Noises, morse, voice
utility signals or computer-like noise ? All the repports I saw are in the Mark
Connelly's IDXD archive from the 1990s... (Chiochiu-QC)
183 GERMANY Europe 1, Felsberg (Saarlouis) DEC 22 0330 - fired their tx on
about this time. I heard that Europe 1 is 24h on FM and broadcasts from
0230-2300 UTC on LW or something like that. First heard with a half electropop
half acoustic Afropop tune by Amadou et Mariam, then the announcer was
complementing their work saying in French they found the right balance between
African and Occidental music. Then into the analysis of an english-speaking
singer singing like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston that was fairly obscure to
me. Weird to have African music-related features on two differents FF stations
! Huge with very little in the way of deep fadings and absolutely no local
computer or beacon QRM at all on this frequency as the PK's Magnetic loop seems
unsensitive to overload from strong pests such as CINF-690 or CFAV-1570 ! This
and Iceland-189 were the best LWers the past evening ! +DEC 22 0550 -
mentioning the journalist Emmanuel Maubert which worked for AVENTURE FM b!
ack in 1988. Is anyone having any airchecks of Aventure FM which switched to
MaXXimum-M40-RTL1-RTL2 afterwards ? +DEC 23 0000 - start of a talkshow, part of
it dealed with the reality of a lesbian who forced herself to marry because she
wanted kids and the psy didn't understand her (when he meet it 20+ years ago).
Huge, the best TA LW signal at this time ! (Chiochiu-QC)
189 ICELAND RUV - Rikisutvarpid, Gufuskalar DEC 22 0225 - Man in Icelandic
making some comments in between obscure musical selections that sounded like a
gothic version of mid-1950's rockabilly with Icelandic lyrics. (Iceland,
despite it's small size and small population, has a rich musical industry).
Good, slightly weaker than Europe 1 on 1983 which was VERY good, but the best
was yet to come. +DEC 22 0800+ - after a good movie watched past midnight and
all that astonishing DX couldn't sleep, so fired the Sangean CST-818 / PK's
Magnetic LW loop combo once again. France-162 was still fair and partially
readable in spite of computer-like high-pitched growl and this one was
EXCELLENT, semi-local-like and unbelievable with, at this time, mainly two men
and occasionally a woman in Icelandic with two or three songs sqeezed in
between the talk segments of their program. The chatter was partly
music-related, I think, as I recognized the "rock" and "blues" words. At the
end of one!
of the talk segments, heard a man making his voice softer and the other one
said a word ressembling English "Thank You" and German "Danke!" (Icelandic is a
Germanic language and have small ressemblance with both English and,
especially, German - Bogdan). After the Danke-like word, 4 seconds break, then
a classical interlude with beautifol trompett sounding like Bolero de Ravel.
Our dog was sitting in the bed and as the classical trompett-based interlude
began, he jumped toward the radio... So it seems we have a second DXer in our
house. (Our dog was treated by a series of psy trance, progressive rock,
classical music, World Music and French-Caribbean zouk music all summer long; I
played the same record once every 3 or 4 days in order to help him developp a
melodical sense. At night, I almost always left the radio switched to the
classical music local CJPX on 99.5 MHz FM. He is quite sensitive to music,
indeed. What maked this unusual was that it was a distant station with !
EXCELLENT signal by DX standard SEMI-local-like and with FAIR signal f
or a local listener, so a few barely noticeable noise - for me - was audible
and the dog has even better ears - Bogdan). SINPO 44444 +DEC 26 0628 - playing
a wide variety of mx -> Xmas mx, alternative rock, then switched to classical
mx selections that included Chopin, then a man was heard mentioning Reykjavik.
Fairly good SINPO 35343. (Chiochiu-QC)
198 UNITED KINGDOM BBC Radio 4, Droitwich DEC 22 0258 - Man in
British-accented English with a fair accent with QRM from a fairly strong local
beacon on 201 kHz and from a weaker skywave-propagated one that was right on
198 and was a bit weaker than the BBC-198 signal. +DEC 24 0000 - giving weather
forecast for various QTH's within the UK, then a news item about Russia which
is "the biggest trade exporter in the World". The Russian news item, as well as
the rest of the newscast was probably relayed from BBCWS. Fair. SINPO 35243-2.
(Chiochiu-QC)
225 POLAND Raszyn DEC 22 0325 - music at a threshold level briefly noted here
but faded away at 0331 recheck. If I get this, which is a fairly difficult LW
catche under what our nearby colleague Sylvain Naud judge by himself to be
less-than-spectacular condx on LW, then my home country Antena Satelor on 153
kHz out of Bod should be, AT LEAST, remotely possible. +DEC 23 0015 - Tentative
! Slavic talk and unID music almost barely getting though powerlines-like
noise. SINPO 25222. Surprised to get this, as almost anything else was burried
in powerline-like noise (Chiochiu-QC)
234 LUXEMBURG, RTL, Beidweler DEC 22 0046 - this alerted me before using the
Sangean CST-818 barefoot I could hear Sting way down in the noise. Very
excited, I changed the battery out of my brand new PK's Magnetic LW loop and
using the brand new one, rotating the antenna's QRG amplifier I could either
amplify the 232 kHz beacon, RTL-234 or a 237 kHz beacon, so this one was
sandwiched in between 2 NDBs, yet thanks to it's good signal was partially
readable. Using the Sangean CST-818 barefoot, this one was threshold and the
beaconds which were slightly weaker were at VERY threshold levels, so I can't
say the reception pretty much improved, but at least it had a rich fully
dynamic sound in spite of high-pitched NDB's morse QRM. + DEC 22 0341 - good
once again in spite of NDB QRM that was reduced by amplifying only 234 with the
amplifier right in the center of the wanted frequency in order to somewhat
attenuate 232 and 237, playing "Musique" by France Gall from 1975, one of he!
r very few Disco records then man in FF with RTL ID and time-check "4 heures
quarante-et-une", but the rest of his talk was buried in adjacent channel
beacon's splatter. Partially readable, of course, but at least the signal it's
self was quite strong. (Chiochiu-QC)
252 ALGERIA, Alger Cha?ne 3 DEC 22 0111 - with the receiver tuned to 253 kHz
in AM Narrow mode (the BFO is a lackluster for listenable BCB signals) and the
antenna's set to favour reception around 252 kHz while reducing the 4 kHz
distant local UL beacon on 248 kHz heard at a poor level a plaintive male AA
vocal (not ra?, sounded more traditionnal than ra? does) getting through the
still not completly nullled UL-248 kHz QRM. I didn't even think I was sure of
getting this one someday. Of course, if the Sangean CST-818 has slightly below
average IF image rejection and slightly above average sensitivity, it's
selectivity is excellent - UL is super-powered (1000 W), yet this one managed
to get through at a somewhat impressive level, at least by the rather tolerant
DX standards. Impressive ! Now, if I could only get Atlantic 252 which is off
the air since 2001 - one of the very few commercial broadcasters using LW. Is
RTE Radio One using less power than the former Atlantic 252 d!
id ? + DEC 22 0410 - FF talk, unreadable, very weak and unreadable, weaker
than at 0111 UTC. (Chiochiu-QC)
Bogdan speaks: after a brief amount of very slight solar activity, the solar
activty went to extremely quiet once again, even though the Earth remained with
a quiet high-spead coronal stream which in theory does enhance "mediumwave
Latins", but instead it maked LW reception almost unbearable. I tentatively
logged Poland-225, but nothing else interesting a few days ago, then the past
night things improoved. The best was Sunday night and early Monday mornings,
when Iceland-189 was excellent and unheard-since RTL-234 was quite good in
spite of NDB QRM.
585 SPAIN, Radio Nacional de Espa?a, Madrid DEC 22 0046 - briefly fading up
at a poor and partially readable level with radio drama in Spanish, otherwise
mostly threshold at best. MW TAs were almost inexistent the past night. Even
this one (the only one heard) was very unimpressive. On Friday evenings they
were much stronger and so they were on Saturday. +DEC 22 0151 - female host
talking very fast with his listeners in a rapid-fire way, very hyperactive
chatter; couldn't pick up a word, maybe because of this and because in Spain
the accents are tougher to follow on and to understand than in Cuba or
Venezuela which I'm used to hear on MW and to a lesser extent on SW too. Very
good signal though. SINPO 44422 faded away near the ToH to a very poor strenght
and afterwards the MW TAs were almost inexistent and the LW ones weren`t much
better. Best reception ever ! (Chiochiu-QC)
1071 SPAIN, Euskadi Irratia / 1080 / 1143 SPAIN, SER DEC 21 / 22 - no log -
just out of the amusement, I tried for this channel. I managed to null out WTIC
to a fairly fair and barely acceptable signal level even the past night even
though the further and lower in frequency WJR was almost unnulable. In spite of
that nothing under the nulled WTIC. I think the SER-1080 is the best way to log
an even-channel TA from Spain (Vatican-1530 is easier but I think Jesus was a
masochist and the Pope is part of the Reptilian brotherhood who used the
masochism of Jesus to manipulate us and to use the pain of a lack of justice to
provocate nvrosis while our passions flew away in an unneded way - another
reason why I didn't had the patience to positively identify the SS rel. "Radio
Cadena La Voz de la Victoria" mystery on 540 a few weeks ago), but nothing
materialized. The nulling of WTIC's IBOC hash enabled me to get a nice signal
out of CHOK-1070 which has country music (ex. oldies) !
for a midldly interesting domestic DX challenge (I love to DX stations playing
music, any kind of music with the exception of punk-rock which is way much
worse than the hardest form of metal - is like someone laughing at you in a
very cold and unfriendly way). Maybe CHOK was, at a good level, too strong to
allow the 1071 local Spaniard Euskadi Irratia to squeeze by, I don't know... On
1143 while tuning between 1140 and 1150 only got some splash from
CKOC/CJRC-1150 that almost reached 1140 and were quite noticeable just above
the high side of the 1140 kHz NA channel. So a no log. (Chiochiu-QC)
1215 - nothing heard yesturday using the Sangean-CST-818 barefoot as there are
way too many overspills using the Sanyo MCD-S830 which its relatively wide
selectivity. (Chiochiu-QC)
1134 SPAIN COPE, synchros (probably the 50 kW tx) DEC 21 0021 - Man in
Spanish and some music getting through for a few seconds through difficult to
maintain a null on WBBR-1130. Probably Croatia in there too, but not sure. A
narrow filter would have dealed easily with this one, but, alas, the Sangean
CST-818 rx may be more selective than my Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot, but it's much
less selective (though I tried 1134 in AM Narrow position and heard nothing). I
don't have a MW loop right now. What models should I try ? (Chiochiu-QC)
Bogdan speaks: no other MW TAs heard despite several checks the past night,
although something on 603 or 612 was having a high fluttery growl, not sure at
all if a TA het and no audio other than Spain-585.
9575 MOROCCO, Medi Un / Radio M?diterann?e Internationale, Nador DEC 23 0556
- caught the end of the FF newscast with an item about a doctor judged for
illegal practice of medecine, then music including "Miles Away" by Madonna and
an AA rhythmic vocal by almost-certainly Nancy Arjam (a Libanese singer that
achieved a certain level of popularity in North Africa as well in spite of the
huge amount of ra? listeners). Very good with little in the way of fades; I
felt asleep listening to this and I when I woke before 11 AM local (before 1600
UTC) they were still hanging on at a fairly threshold level. An interesting
phenomenon: when this is on, the supposed 171 // is either out or totally
unreadable, when LW-171 is listenable, this one is absent. SINPO 44533. +DEC 23
2120 - playing sad R&B tunes; very good with only slight splatter from
Gabon-9580 in AM Wide mode which was considerably weaker (at a poor and fadey
level). (Chiochiu-QC)
Bogdan speaks once again: The nice presence of Spain-585 hasn't allowed me to
go after the Europirates, even though LW and, especially, MW TAs are good
beacons for lower-powered Europirates around 48m according to George Maroti.
Pan-American DX:
750 VENEZUELA, YVKS, Caracas, Distrito Federal bolivariano DEC 22 0035 -
Woman in Spanish way under WSB. The only South American noted the past evening.
Like I said, condx on MW for both the LAs and the TAs were really awful the
past night and they seemed short-skip dominated, but I understand that 375
miles can make a huge difference (cf Bruce Conti). On 760, WJR was almost
unnulable using the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot with not even the faintest trace of
the Colombian powerhouse. +DEC 23 around 0400 UTC - with a man announcer with a
fairly serious voice talking about what the "angeles" did when they meet Jesus
Christ at his birth, then, after this narrative rel. segment, a few canned IDs
such as "Usted escucha RCR, Radio Caracas Radio, 750 AM, ..." during which it
started to mix w/ WSB and fade away. SINPO 43523-2. How comes I couldn't follow
the program content of Spain-585, yet Venezuela-750 was very listenable, at
least for several minutes ? Spain-585 on DEC 21 at 0151 U!
TC was at about the same level as YVKS-750 on DEC 23 around 0400 UTC ! Are the
"mediumwave euros" using slighter modulation than the NA and LAs ? Curiosity
enquires ! (Chiochiu-QC)
760 COLOMBIA HJAJ, RCN Cadena Bas?ca, Barranquilla, departamiento del
Atlantico DEC 26 0358 - Man w/ mention of "R-C-N" then commercial ads; poor and
very quickly lost. Heard on the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot in my room as at the
sweet DX spot of my parent's room I placed the Sangean-CST-818 / PK's Magnetic
Loop combo in order to catch up Iceland-189 and other LW Euros. (Chiochiu-QC)
770 CUBA Radio Rebelde, unID QTH DEC 26 around 0248 - bits of Spanish audio
trying to get through the WABC's non-stop Xmas mx broadcast. What must be
annoying for those trying to listen to WABC using, for exemple, a car-radio's
whip is that WBBM-780 is using the IBOC exciter all night long. (Chiochiu-QC)
780 VENEZUELA YVNM, Radio Coro, Coro, estado Falc?n DEC 23 0356 - Tentative
w/ slow LAm mx, fair and fadey in a more or less solid WBBM null. What maked
this unusual is that when YVKS is strong, YVNM is totally absent and
vice-versa. Be careful if you get Romantica 7-80, it might well be that
station... They replaced the empty time slot between "La Discoteca del Pueblo"
and "Ruta M?sical 7-80" with romantic schlager-like SS music instead of the
ever-popular Ley Resorte-related trad. joropos, golpes, pasajes (m?sica
llanera), gaitas or even Afro-Venezuelan music. (Chiochiu-QC)
Bogdan speaks: Finally, here comes the end of my repport. Impressive, ain't it
? Well, yes it is, but there are a few disappointments. I won't talk about MW
since using what I might call a clone of the GE Superradio models (according to
the reviews, they might show quite some similarities with my Sanyo MCD-S830) is
less than perfect for trans-oceanic MW DX, but I will instead talk about LW.
First of all, the battery inside my Magnetic Loop antenna have weakened a lot.
Last night, my UL beacon on 248 kHz was at a strenght of 7 out of 7, this
morning at 6 out of 7 and right now at 5 out 7. It is not a huge problem,
but... Then, Morocco-207, Germany-207 and Romoules-216 were either missing or
completly covered by beacon QRM to the point that nothing more than imaginary
level audio (c.f. WEAKER THAN POLAND-225) could be squeezed out. 207 is clearer
than 216 which is burried by an NDB right on 217, so would 207 be possible. Is
207 still active ? Also, nothing more than unintellig!
ible audio on 153 which is supposed to have an Algerian pest covering my
home-country Antena Satelor, in Bod 20 km north of Brasov. I'd love even to
hear that Algerian pest, as I love ra? music and since I grew listening to
Middle Eastern SW while in Bucharest Arabic music has always been to my liking.
Anyone getting something on 153 at a few hundreds miles of distance that could
definitively make a difference ? In the mean time, it is nice that the barely
listenable yet challenging and HIGHLY interesting FF outlet on 252 kHz plays AA
music as well !!!!!!!! Maybe Alger Cha?ne 3 is closing down for night and is
replaced by AN px from Alger Cha?ne 1 or RT El Jazaira Radio Wahad ???? I don't
know !
But, in spite of those few disappointments, my LW experience on the wee hours
of December 22 rewarded me with a great lack of sleep. I fell asleep shorlty
after 4AM while Iceland-189 was still really loud and I woke before 8AM, so
almost 3 hours and a half of sleep and I don't seem that tired. Sounds like my
enthousiasm for DXing is in full swing...
Also a big thanks to Walter Salmaniw which, yesturday, said the Magnetic LW
loop is a better performer than the average Beverage. This makes me regret I
gave back a Realistic TRF receiver to the family which loaned me it back in
late 2000 / early 2001... They put it in the garbage... It worked quite well
barefoot and resisted well to overload - at that time the AM band in
Pierrefonds was much more empty -> nothing on 1450 or 1570... - of course with
the Magnetic LW loop, it could have done wonders, but let's not try to loose
our DX freedom...
I'd also like to congratulate Paul Karlstrand for having built the antenna with
so much love and with so succesfull results. I didn't hoped the antenna could
pull in such difficult signals like Algeria-252 or Poland-225. Congratulations
! I wonder if LW reception (at least Mongolia-164 or Far East Russia) is
possible from Australia, from QTHs like Darwin that have a water path toward
Asia... I did read somewhere that the first 3 broadcasters ever in Australia
used LW and the first station ever in the world to start broadcasting
officially was XWA on 250 kHz (Montreal) back in December of 1919, although in
1920 it switched to 600 kHz and LW was never used anymore for broadcasting in
NA which is why this band is so interesting...
May the good DX bless your ears and make you forget daylight even exists !...
Bogdan

Hi Karel
Your reception was very impressive, it shows that despite the over crowding
on MW, medium wave DX is far from dead. I found the following recording on
YouTube, you might be interesed to compare locations
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5SFy7ZrlQQ&feature=related
This is what I assume to be a satellite picture via Google of the
transmitting site. Use 44 09 22.71 N 86 53 58.76 E as the search terms.

** CANADA. It`s always something awry at Sackville. 9625 remained in whack with
no spurs audible, but at 1419 Dec 29, NHKWNRJ relay on 11705 was overmodulated
somewhat and splattering 11680-11730 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CHAD. No sign of RNT on 4905, Dec 29 at 0600. Perhaps they were back on
6165, but nothing much there either, poor propagation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDONESIA. 9526, VOI, Dec 29 at 1457 poor signal hit by perpetual het from
on-frequency 9525, CRI about to start English via Kashi, but Jakarta on top, at
1500 opening its own English, mentioning 11785 which they are not using at this
time, 1502:30 into news headlines, but knowing I would shortly be abandoned, to
avoid frustration, I stopped listening but left a receiver with BFO on 9527, to
detect how long the transmitter would stay on by mistake this time: until 1511*
Ron Howard, California was listening at exactly the same time, reminds us it`s
really 9525.90 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. XERTA, 4800, Dec 29 at 0601, with Mexican national anthem at local
midnight. If you are not familiar with it, a good chance to hear it any night,
and help locate other stations, especially on MW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** PHILIPPINES. FEBC, 9430, VG signal with unpublicized bilingual broadcast,
Dec 29 at 1453 OM in American English talking about grace, another tenuous
theological concept, alternating with YL in Chinese, presumably consecutive
translation. Bocaue, 100 kW at 345 degrees, but could have been aimed right at
US.
Then at 1504 found weaker but sufficient signal on 9400 saying Salaam Aleikum,
Turkic language and only recognized an occasional foreign word such as druzhya,
Bethlehem, all talk, still at 1518, but 1523 a bit of music; 1525 splatter de
Brother Scare/WWRB 9385 worsening as 9400 faded some, wrapping up, 1528:30
mentioned Almat?, Kazakhstan, I think. 1530 Jesus-Saves IS, so it`s FEBC, and
off at 1530:30*. Then looked up in Aoki to find it`s Uighur from Bocaue at 323
degrees. No trace of jamming, so the Chicom are not so worried about the gospel
huxters as they are about the few secular or Islamic-influenced broadcasts on
SW in Uighur (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** RUSSIA. 6115, Dec 29 at 1443 with brief Russian axualities into Chinese
voice-overs, somewhat distorted. If I were list-logging with PWBR `2009` I
would have to conclude this was YFR in English via Irkutsk, but unseems;
instead per Aoki it`s VOR in Chinese via Khabarovsk (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** SEYCHELLES [non]. Just above big signal from Turkey 12035, found English
preaching with British accent on 12045, Dec 29 at 1422, mentioning believers,
femininity. S9 +12 on the meter, but quite undermodulated, and flutter. 1428
closing with a P O Box 8700 address somewhere in India, and separate FEBA
address. 1429:30 IS and off, but back on a few sex later, much weaker with tone
or het.
I had just happened upon one of the rare English broadcasts from FEBA, this one
via UAE, on Mondays only, and switching from 110 to 70 degrees for Urdu
following, per Aoki. I`d think the UA Emir would be in trouble with his Islamic
brethren for broadcasting all this Infidel stuff; but then compared to the
debauchery going on in Dubai, this is small potatoes and who`s to know where it
is really coming from? Heh, heh (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** VENEZUELA [non]. RNV CI, 11680 via Cuba, Dec 29 at 1541-1546 had segment
Contacto con los Diexistas: intro and outro in Spanish but body of program by
the YL with broken English. She read report from Juan Franco Crespo in Spain
(who surely wrote in Spanish), and from someone in Kanagawa, then quick
explanation of SINPO and UTC, formerly ``GTM`` -- Like the hoary schedule
announcements, RNV keeps running these items over and over too (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 6074, 8GAL back with conventional V/CQ marker at *1400-1401* Dec
29. Started before the 5-second-late timesignal from RUSSIA 6075 had finished
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

QTH: Kabul, Afghanistan
RX: WinRadio G303e
ANT: 200m Longwire/Randomwire
ACC: Palstar MW-550P Mediumwave Preselector
3321 AFGHANISTAN, RTV Afghanistan heard at 1627 on 29 Dec with local talk
in vernacular and some music. This is the 3rd harmonic of nominal 1107 kHz.
This just appeared so they may be mis-tuned. VoA audio heard underneath the
main audio, so it would appear that the US govt. has their fingers in this
somehow. Supposedly this is 400kW. This was very strong, so there is a
very good chance those outside of Afghanistan may hear it.
4865 INDIA, AIR Unid. heard at 1610 on 29 Dec w/subcontinental mx, Hindi
talk and booming signals. Lots of talk about Pakistan. Several IDs as "Yeh
All India Radio Heh." Audio stopped at 1622 in mid talk. Dead air carrier
clear through until 1742 s/off. Nothing listed in EiBi, AOKI, WRTH or AIR
website. Was this 4860 that was misprogrammed?
4925 INDONESIA, RRI Jambi heard at 1558 on 29 Dec w/Indonesian talk,
station ID, up until s/off at 1622. First Indo regional heard by me here in
Kabul. Weak, but may be the precursor to a good opening.
Well, the flu is just about gone, and I can at least walk up the stairs
without wheezing.
Our guesthouse generator died the other night, so there was no power and we
spent the night freezing and huddled around one of the famous Afghan stoves.
Thank you Johnnie Walker! Kept me warm all night.
We now have a new generator and it is practically brand new. The noise and
hash on the bands have been greatly reduced, (witness RRI Jambi) and there
are lots of new signals to be heard. Mediumwave is especially clear now
(used to be a lot of spurious genset noise on there), and I am hoping to get
some good DXing in for the New year.
Best 73 de Al Muick
