Indonesia, 9525.93, Voice of Indonesia, 1035-1045, Noted a program of
English
language comments by both a male and female with music interspersed. Signal
was
very good compared to previous mornings. Noted a number of ID's as, "...
Voice
of Indonesia ... " However, the female had trouble with the English and was
difficult
to understand at times. (Chuck Bolland, January 17, 2009)

Russia, 6075, Radio Rossii, 1059-1115, At tune in, noted time ticks
followed with
ID's as "Radio Rossii". On the hour news in Russian followed by comments.
Signal
was poor with noise, but I was glad to hear this anyway. (Chuck Bolland,

17, 2009)

India, 4920, AIR, 0113-0130 At tune in, signal was at a fair level with a
female
in comments briefly. She was followed with a male talking with possibly
news.
Heard the name Obama mentioned often. Signal finally ended up as a poor.

Warm greetings to all of you !

LW TAs were gradually improving, though the past night the trans-atlantic skip
on LW was only half-decent and tonight LW signals seems unreadables yet. MW TAs
still are inexistent, as reveal both Spain-585 and Morocco-595, but I think we
are running fast from solar minimal and I'd rather expect good auroral southern
enhacement than a feeding-frenzy high-latitude east-west opening ! What are
your thoughts about this ?

Trans-Atlantic DX

162 FRANCE France Inter, Allouis JAN 17 0251 - Fair-good with minimal
computer-like hash playing slow music on guitar. SIO 453 ! (Chiochiu-QC)

171 MOROCCO Medi Un, Nador JAN 16 0345 - continous plantive Arabic vocals
which were perphaps religion-related. Generally fair ! The best North African
LW in the Montreal area ! (Chiochiu-QC)

183 GERMANY Europe 1 JAN 16 0310 - Booming in as I tuned it with a French
talkshow regarding the sexuality of the older persons ! This and Iceland-189
are usually the strongest longwave broadcasters to reach my QTH in the Montreal
area ! (Chiochiu-QC)

189 ICELAND Rikisutvarpid, Gufaskalar JAN 17 0125 - with a mixture of
Icelandic and English-language pops and short IDs as "Ruv (Fier?)..." between
almost each song. (Chiochiu-QC)

207 unID JAN 14 0320 - bits of unredable audio getting through several beacons
including perphaps QI on 206 kHz in Nova Scotia. SIO 111, nothing usable.
(Chiochiu-QC)

216 FRANCE RMC, Roumoules JAN 16 0420 - French news, poor-fair in the absence
of the usual groundwave and/or short-skip beacon that dominates this TA
channel. (Chiochiu-QC)

225 POLAND unID JAN 15 2231 - weak man talk, pretty much a threshold signal.
Probably Poland, as this is the only broadcaster heard on this channel by our
dearly Sylvain Naud ! (Chiochiu-QC)

234 LUXEMBOURG RTL, Beidweler JAN 14 0549 - with a joke regarding the Barak
Obama's rise in status "il casse la baraque" which roughly translates to break
the shadow between him and his futur status as the president of the USA. Very
good, way over NDB QRM, had armchair copy for a couple of minutes, but then
faded under the beacons ! Best ever reception of this 2 MW powerhouse ! SINPO
43522 (Chiochiu-QC)

Pan-American DX

570 CUBA CMDC, Radio Reloj, Pil?n JAN 17 0342 - Woman with nx and RR code IDs
at the end of one news item. Couldn't copy much, as the reception wasn't as
good as the last Sunday morning, but obviously you don't need armchair copy to
get the RR code IDs past WSYR Syracruse... I wonder when is WSYR nest
maintenance period ? (Chiochiu-QC)

600 CUBA CMKV, Radio Rebelde, Urbano Norris JAN 15 0210 - "...el primero,
segundo..." baseball play-by-play. Good under domestics. SIO 422 (Chiochiu-QC)

640 CUBA CMBC, Radio Progreso, Guanabacoa and / or CMBD, Radio Progreso, Las
Tunas JAN 17 0339 - Presumed with Spanish programming in heavy QRM from WNNZ
and other weaker visitors. This one is NOT as strong as it once had, giving
real hope of hearing the Jos? Elias Diaz Gomez's DX tests during the Sinton?a
DX program over Uni?n Radio (YVQO, Puerto-La Cruz, Anzo?tegui) during, at
least, a decent semi-auroral opening, if not a heavy auroral one. (Chiochiu-QC)

730 unID JAN 17 0450 - In local CKAC null: romantic Spanish male vocal getting
through strong residual CKAC, followed by Spanish announcements way under
residual CKAC. SIO 412. I had some fadings in null of their groundwave, as if
skywave already start to blen with groundwave at such a short distance
(probably 12 km from downtown Montreal as the crow flies) ! HJCU Melod?a AM in
Santaf? de Bogot? is suspected, as XEX is now "Sports Ya". Also, didn't seem //
640... (Chiochiu-QC)

750 VENEZUELA YVKS, Radio Caracas Radio, Caracas, Distrito Federal JAN 17
0350 - Woman announcer with several repporters concerning a lost video and
their attempts at trying to locate that lost video which seemed fairly suspect
(weird, to say the least). SINPO 33322, as the signal wasn't too stable and
almost completly faded away with WSB fading-up. Overall, pretty fair reception
! (Chiochiu-QC)

760 COLOMBIA HJAJ, RCN Cadena Bas?ca, Barranquilla JAN 17 0350 - Man in
studio chatting with someone outdoors, very threshold and unreadable. Condx
need to be at least SLIGHTLY below average to South America for this one to be,
at least, listenable ! (Chiochiu-QC)

770 CUBA CMKB, Radio Rebelde, QTH ? JAN 17 0449 - Cuban "beisbol" event way
under WABC, noted in passing. (Chiochiu-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM, Radio Coro, Coro, estado Falc?n JAN 17 0445 - one hour
later, after an unsuccesful attempt to listen to a definite signal out of
HJAJ-760, got to hear an upbeat cumbia using major chords with lots of
accordeon at a fair level. Quite surprised to get this, as this one is well
heard when conditions are at least AVERAGE toward South America and the past
night they were well subpar. A couple of dozens of seconds later, I was
chassing possible Colombia-730 ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Additionnal comments: In addition (another use of that "famous" word) to
joining the NRC, I was gladly invitied to ABDS a wonderful Yahoo! Group where I
could all, but boore myself. The moderator of that group knows me quite well
and found suspect that despite my young age, being passionated by radio and by
history, I tried desesperatly to locate information on the web about how well
and how regularly the CX Radio Imparcial out of Montevideo could be heard on
1090 kHz back in the late 60's durign WBAL's Monday Morning Silent Period... He
though I wasn't a teenager, but an adult and did think I could pay the NRC dues
by myself.... Well, there is a magic word for this: Asperger's Syndrome which
also explain why I'm so obsessed with the history of oldschool DXing and
oldschool radio stations, especially the French one Aventure FM and to a
somewhat lesser extent, other ones as well...

This will be probably the last of the regular repports, as the comeback to
school is imminent.

I have a special meeting with a girl tonight, so I have to keep the additionnal
comments shorter than usually !

This repport is brougt to you by Bogdan Chiochiu, DXing from Pierrefonds
(Montreal's West Island), PQ - QC using the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot and the
Sangean CST-818 along with the PK's Shielded Magnetic LW loop !

May the good DX suddenly comeback in a brutal way !
Bogdan Chiochiu

5005 UNID/(NEPAL?), This freq was dead this morning at 0140 on 18 Jan.
The last few days there has been a carrier there at the same level of the
regional Indian stations, and once I thought I heard a little modulation.
This morning propagation seems to be poor w/even the regional Indians coming
in at a bad level. An email from my old friend Ram Karki, the Technical
Director for Radio Nepal, states that they are indeed using 5005. I will
have to press him further to see if they are testing or actually active.
Ram and I worked together for the UN in Sudan in 2005/06.

6035 BHUTAN, BBS, heard at 0150 on 18 Jan with exceptionally strong sigs
with some chanting and traditional mx. If you can ever catch the opeing of
transmissions with the monks chanting, it is a real treat for the ears -
truly haunting.

6190 CHINA, PBS Xinjiang, heard at 0203 on 18 Jan in CH w/CH hard rock mx
and telephone talk show. The mx was interesting, but to a westerner, the CH
lang just doesn't "fit" to hard rock mx. Good sigs, but weaker than normal
here in Kabul.

Yesterday, we had another suicide bomber (read: coward) who detonated
himself right next to a fuel tanker being escorted by US Soldiers from Camp
Eggers, about 3 blocks away from my office. The blast shattered my office
windows and I was the recipient of a few cuts and abrasions, but still
managed to get out on the balcony and shout that they missed me. As I
understand it, one soldier is dead and about 8 wounded, several guards in
front of the German embassy were killed as were several children playing in
the area and a number of other civilians. My intel sources say that more
such attacks are expected, so I guess I have to batten down the hatches for
a little while and am essentially confined to my office and the guest house.

Guess I'll have time to do some antenna maintenance and DX.

I hope everyone else is doing alright and enjoying the DX.
