The Shortwave Report 02/06/09 Listen Globally!
Posted February 6th, 2009 by outfarpress
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (February 6) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both
broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (4.9MB)
(28:59)
(NEW! If you have access to Audioport.org there is a higher quality version
posted up there {26.7MB} http://www.audioport.org/index.php?op=producer-
info&uid=904&nav=&)
This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio
Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- MacDonalds is opening up 175 new outlets and creating
10,000 jobs in China this year. Northern China is continuing to experience a
severe drought. The new US Secretary of Energy has warned that the Sierra
Mountains in California could lose 90 percent of its snowpack due to global
warming. Britain is covered in record-breaking snowfall. The World
Economic Forum concluded in Davos, with few representatives from the
banking industry in attendance. Leaders of Hamas in Palestine say that they
will accept a one year truce with Israel. The Egyptian President lashed out at
Hamas for not being willing to make a compromise with Israel. Palestinian
President Abbas reasserted his charge that Israel is guilty of war crimes in
the latest attacks on the Gaza Strip.
From NETHERLANDS- Radio Netherlands has eliminated shortwave
broadcasts to North America. The decision is based on their surveys that
find very few listeners in N America. If you ever listen to RN on shortwave,
please let them know- by email to [email protected] or send them a letter to
Radio Netherlands Worldwide, PO Box 222, 1200JG, Hilversum, The
Netherlands.
One of the effects of the Israeli attacks on Gaza is the destruction of 60
percent of its farmland, setting up serious food shortages for the coming
year. A press review on the Dutch government?s inquiry into their support of
the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Militants in the Pakistani portion of the
Khyber Pass have cut off a supply route for the NATO troops occupying
Afghanistan. An American organization thinks that the Netherlands should
be made a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for its policy on drugs.
From CUBA- Israel has placed severe restrictions on the Al-Jazeera
network because of their recent coverage of the Gaza massacre. The
Obama White House has decided not to end the practice of Extraordinary
Rendition. Many legal and human rights activists in Europe are demanding
that George Bush be charged with crimes against humanity.
From RUSSIA- The head of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, says that
direct dialogue between the US and Iran will lead to a normalization of
relations in the Middle East.
There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on line
at-http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-shortwaves
I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek, available
at http://radio.mediageek.net
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in
the
last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just
want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower
sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-
speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow
connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will
play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime,
iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PDST) on KZYX/Z
Philo CA, you might be able to stream via < http://www.kzyx.org >
There are several other streams that work better- <
http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this
program on Friday at 9:00am.(PDST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from <
feed://www.radio4all.net/responder.php/podcast/podcast.xml?series=outFar
press+presents > or iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)
Check out the amazing streams at < http://www.radicalradio.org >
And Radio For Peace International at < http://www.rfpi.org >
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am
still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into
this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting
this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so
through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!

** COLOMBIA. Altho Yimber Gavir?a in Colombia had reported no signals from
Lleras on 5910 or 6010, Feb 8 at 0300, when I checked Feb 9 at 0607, Marfil
Est?reo was on with songs, good signal on 5910; on 6010 a mess of hets and
could not be sure LV de tu Conciencia was among them (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. RHC Esperanto service missing, Sunday Feb 8 at 1500 check, 11760
already off the air; nor any RHC Spanish frequencies overrunning as often
happens, in quick scan of 11, 13 and 15 MHz bands. A repeat of Esperanto is
scheduled Sundays at 1930 on 11760, but nothing there either at 1948 check. I
wonder if the Sunday 0700 and 2330 broadcasts were also absent.
However, RNV CI was active on 11680 opening 1500+ in broken English with
program summary, much of which would turn out to be in Spanish. This
transmission has normally been missing on Sundays with transmitters tied up for
Al?, Presidente, but none of those were on the air this date (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** ROMANIA. I was waiting to hear the conclusion of the 1300 English broadcast
from RRI on 11970 as soon as WYFR signed off at 1345 Feb 9 ? but no trace of
it, while Romanian service on 11940 was audible, as was English on 15105. I
again wonder if they have moved 11970 somewhere else, as they should, or if
this new transmitter keeps breaking down. Schedule at
http://www.rri.ro/art.shtml?lang=1&sec=20&art=15758
still shows 15105 and 11970.
Anyhow, on 15105 at 1352 after rock music in English and ID, plugged their
current contest THE GOLD OF THE APUSENI MOUNTAINS all about which is here:
http://www.rri.ro/art.shtml?lang=1&sec=16&art=18303
Prizes are two 10-day trips for two in August, all expenses, EXCEPT you have to
pay your own way to and from Romania, and get your own visas. This page does
not say HOW the winners are chosen. I suspect that from all the correct entries
(assuming there are any), a drawing is held, but why don`t they say so? Failure
to clarify this is unethical, and makes entrants think if they get all the
answers right, they are bound to win (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SAUDI ARABIA. BSKSA, 15435, Feb 8 at 1504 in Qur`an with buzz, the latter
not too loud but definitely problematic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SPAIN [non]. Surprised to hear Vatican Radio in the clear on 5965, Feb 9 at
0605, English Bible lesson, no trace of REE relay via Costa Rica which normally
collides. But it was back to usual mess at 0612 recheck, with Vat underneath //
7250. Meanwhile I had checked 3350, and that was also off the air --- but the
latter is supposed to be off, scheduled only 0200-0600 Tue-Sat, while 5965 is
0200-0800 daily.
Just as I suspected, the new program schedule effective Feb 1, at
http://www.rtve.es/files/70-13363-FICHERO/Parrilla__5.pdf
mentioned in DXLD 9-012, turns out to be another imaginary one!
M-F at 1330-1400 UT it shows Fuero Propio ? fuero means laws or privileges, so
I don`t get what this is supposed to be about. But in fact, Noticias en Lenguas
Co-Oficiales is still running in this slot as reconfirmed Monday Feb 9 at 1347
in Galician, talking about Mallorca, 1350 into Basque as usual, via CR on
11815, and surely on all the other frequencies relayed and direct (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. One of the Greenville transmitters is starting to squeal, ? la WEWN,
probably exactly the same problem, needing replacement of modulation cards
covering a certain audio frequency segment: 15330, Feb 9 at 1453 with R. Mart?
very strong, and jamming not a problem at the moment. So even when it can
surpass jamming, R. Mart? interferes with itself (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** VENEZUELA [non]. Regular RNV CI program instead of Al?, Presidente: see CUBA

A propaga??o continua ruim, em OT tem havido uma pequena abertura, por?m os
ru?dos desanimam por mais que voc? tente melhorar a antena e etc. Em OT as
emissoras do Norte est?o chegando aqui j? bem cedo ? noitinha. Estou sofrendo
com ru?dos provenientes da rede el?trica, como aqui est? muito seco os fios da
rede mal emendados provocam fagulhas e consequentemente aquele ru?do

India, 4840, AIR, 0208-0225, Noted a series of music and comments

for the rest of the hour waiting for somekind of ID or even a snippet of

period. No break on the hour, just steady music until after 0300. Signal
was fair however. (Chuck Bolland, February 10, 2009)
**Djibouti,. 4780, Radio Djibouti, 0310-0320, I tuned in late for opening,

was poor. (Chuck Bolland, February 10, 2009)
