22 FEBRUARY 2009: The PNGs were OK, not great. Conditions were very fady.
I was going to leave at 1130 but decided to stick it out until the 1200
s/off. Unfortunately the batteries died in the Eton!!

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3385 R. East New Britain 0957-1000 Pop song, M anncr at
1000 w/brief anmnt including NBC ID, singing ad, then M returned w/ID, date,
ment of pgm, and listeners. (22 Feb.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3905 R. New Ireland 1009 M w/pgm rundown ".to sundown"
and ment of NBC, then greetings and messages. Canned M anmnt w/ment of New
Ireland, Papua New Guinea. 1037 nice voice-over ID anmnt over native flute
mx w/ID and ment of khz, then singing by M briefly, and studio M returned
w/ment of New Ireland. Just fair w/heavy fading. (22 Feb.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3325 R. Bougainville Tlk by W at 1049 while RRI
Palangkaraya in Koran. Both mixing about equally. (22 Feb.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3335 R. East Sepik Apparent impassioned rel. speech by M
in vern. Squeezed between CHU and Honduras. Ments of God, Jesus Christ,
Sunday. 1117 studio M w/ment of 10 o'clock nx. 1155 EG rel. song, then
deadair. Was hoping to get a nice recording of s/off anmnts but the E1
batteries died just as the M anncr started at 1159!! The timing couldn't
have been any worse!! (22 Feb.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3345 R. Northern?? Was getting a carrier here at 1116.
Sounded like tlk and mx at 1130. Definitely mx at 1148. (22 Feb.)

All 3 Aussie 120mb outlets excellent at 1144. (22 Feb.)

Back at home:

ECUADOR 3279.91 LV del Napo Carrier already on at 0951 t/in, then 1000 HC
mx w/W voice-over ID anmnt in apparent Shuar w/ment of ".14-20 AM y onda
corta 3,290". Rustic mx and same W again w/tlk. Fair but UTE QRM ruined
reception. (22 Feb.)

CHINA 7260 CRI, Xian (pres.) 1240 tlk by W in JP, then high-pitched vcl,
tlk by same W over mx, then Pop song. CH lang lesson at 1250. Good but
Hams on nearby freq were pounding this. (22 Feb.)

DEM. REP. OF THE CONGO Sent an e-mail to R. Kahuzi just on the outside
chance they might respond on 26 Feb. Was surprised to get a response from
Barbara (Smith) the next day saying to send an MP3 and they'd be able to
tell if it was R. Kahuzi I heard. Of course I whipped off a report with MP3
from an 26 Oct. 2007 reception right away!! After a few hours, got another
reply from Barbara at BESI saying that it was indeed R. Kahuzi I
heard/recorded!! Turns out her and brother Richard McDonald and her husband
all grew up in nearby Clearfield county!! Will followup with an e-mail to
Richard and see if I can gather any info. (27 Feb.)

ECUADOR 3279.91 LV del Napo Signed on at 0910 this morning w/beautiful
lcl HC mx. Very noisy from a nearby weather front though. (27 Feb.)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3345 R. Northern 1158 soft Clarinet mx to ToH, M
w/poss. TC, usual NBC native flute/percussion signature and NBC EG nx by M
starting w/ID "The NBC news read by ??". Nx to 1204, studio M anncr, then
Island mx, M returned at 1008 w/long tlk to 1214, then more pleasant Island
mx. Not a bad signal but would have been much much easier if not for the
noise. (27 Feb.)

Aloha and thanks so much for entering the recent Art of Radio Hawaii

China, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Ukraine, Spain, Venezuela,
Canada, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy,
Argentina, Russia, Denmark, Finland, Mexico, Hong Kong and France.

The question was: what is the callsign of the Hawaiian AM radio

Village Hotel in Waikiki.

The answer we wanted was: KHVH and 69% of your entries were
correct! Well done everyone who took the time to visit the on-line

This has been one of our most popular competitions. The Honolulu
Star-Bulletin newspaper in Hawaii ran an article about it in Erika
Engle's The Buzz radio column and a number of people who used to work
at Hawaiian radio stations also took the time to write....

We're celebrating 50 years of Hawaiian statehood right through
2009, and our next competition features a great prize thanks to our
good friends at RadioLogoLand [www.radiologoland.com]...a vintage
KPOI logo t-shirt! They've got a great new website too....

Look out for this new Art of Radio Hawaii Competition coming soon,
and make sure you get your entry in to win this special KPOI t-shirt
prize courtesy of RadioLogoLand! Of course, we've got other
competitions through 2009 as well....so keep watching your inbox for
our mails....

In the meantime, enjoy all our content at www.radioheritage.net,
and also watch out for some great book bargains coming your way
during March as we clear our stock of great radio books and CDs and
give you big savings!
