Peru, 4775, Radio Tarma, 1015-1030, Have been scanning the
4 and 6 meg bands for a half an hour and this is the first Peruvian
station I've heard. Noted music first, but at 1018 brief Spanish
comments were heard. Ofcourse, this is under a heavy CODAR
signal that is directly over Radio Tarma. Radio Tarma is threshold
unfortunately. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

Bolivia, 4716.70, Radio Yura, 1022-1030, This is a very weak
signal here. Noted just music, but only partially since the signal
is threshold. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

Bolivia, 4796.39, Radio Lipez, (pres), 1026-1035, Can just barely hear
music here. The signal is very threshold. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

Peru, 5039.20, Radio Libertad, 1036-1045, Noted a male in Spanish
language comments at tune in. At 1039 music presented. Male back
with comments at 1041. Signal was poor. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

Bolivia, 6155.23, Radio Fides, 1045-1055, At tune in noted a male in
Spanish language comments conversing with a female. This was
another threshold signal. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

Indonesia, 9524.89, Voice of Indonesia, 1049-1100, Noted muisc
at tune in which sound like a local melody. After the tune a female
comments in what sounds like English briefly, then more music.
Signal was poor. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

Indonesia, 9680, RRI Jakarta, 1052-1100, Canned announcements and promos
noted here in Indonesian language which are followed with live comment from
a
male. Overall, the signal was good. (Chuck Bolland, July 28, 2009)

*** COMMENTS **

On Wednesday (15 JUL) after work, I brought the 'mobile DX shack' to
the Rowley, MA salt-marsh site to try out a few antenna ideas and scoop
up some sunset-period DX scans on the Perseus + netbook combo.

It should have occurred to me to bring some insect repellent. The "no
see 'ems" (midges / gnats) at the site were particularly aggressive and
numerous, so I tried to minimize time outside the car. Thanks to all
the recent rain, tall grass had grown along the edges of the dirt
parking area, actually consuming a couple of the spaces. Between the
bugs and weeds, I was reminded of the phrase in a Talking Heads song:
"If this is paradise, I need a lawnmower."

I did get to try a phased vertical set-up (spacing 30 m / 100 ft.) to
see how broadband the null could be, but with the arrangement used, the
cardioid null in a given direction (towards NYC in this case) only held
up over about 200 kHz. A null on 660 had effectivity at 570, 710, and
770, but was starting to tail off by 880 and was basically not there by
1010, 1050, and 1130. For nulls at those other frequencies,
adjustments to level balance, phase / delay, or both were required. I
think I can do better if I re-engineer the phaser set-up or use two
balanced antennas (a la Wellbrook, Lankford, etc.) instead.

So, for now, the rooftop Micro-SuperLoop still comes out the
car-DXpedition leader in broadbandedness of null. I do want to extend
the horizontal size of that to something like 3 or 4 m (keeping the
vertical dimension 2 m) by the time of the BADX "Clams" get-together at
Granite Pier on 30 JUL. Since a 3 m to 4 m long base board will not
fit in the car as a single piece, it will have to be two wooden boards
with a joiner piece in the middle. Wingnuts will be used for attach /
detach, just as presently on the angle brackets attached to the two
vertical end boards.

The horizontal to vertical ratio of something in the 1.5:1 to 2:1 range
should provide superior back-end nulling with front-to-back coming in
around 25-30 dB, or about 10 dB better than what I get now with the 2 m
by 2 m Micro-SuperLoop.

As typical in early / mid summer, DX started off slowly just a bit
before sunset. It was clearly the western Mediterranean, northwest
Africa, and Canary Islands zone that had the early jump. Besides that
area, the Saudi on 1521 got massive while the sun was still above the
horizon. It was the overall loudest TA by a wide margin. No surprise
there. As it got darker, northern European signals, especially UK,
started getting into the mix. BBC 909 was especially good. For some
reason WAEI - 910 ME wasn't noted. Have they changed power or pattern
(or gone dark) ? 910 was basically a weak YVRQ / WLAT mix: weaker than
909 !

Latin Americans were coming in too, though not as abundantly as on the
previous two shore outings.

The MSI Wind U100 netbook still had two hours of battery life per its
status indicator after about two hours of non-stop Perseus DXing that
included periods of live use without capture as well as 6 spectrum
capture sessions of about 4 minutes each. This is excellent, far
better battery life than on a larger laptop used previously. I don't
think I have to worry about external laptop power for these 2 to 3 hour
DX sessions, though a spare charged-up battery for the netbook wouldn't
be a bad idea.

The car DC adaptor I made for the Perseus worked fine. It is somewhat
based on a Guy Atkins design (link:
http://perseus-sdr.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html) except that it
has a 7808 regulator to get the car DC down to 8 volts ahead of the
BA50JC5T (5 volt) regulator. This way heat dissipation is spread over
two regulators so the box doesn't get quite as hot.

Administrative actions against 50 radio stations in Venezuela
http://english.eluniversal.com/2009/07/27/en_pol_esp_administrative-
actio_27A2548883.shtml
Diosdado Cabello, the Venezuelan Minister of Public Works and Housing
and director of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel),
said that so far about 50 radio stations have been advised that
administrative proceedings have been filed against them.

He added that the owners of the stations will be entitled to the right to
defense, depending on their offenses.

"How can the people who illegally used a radio frequency or a frequency not
licensed by the State defend themselves? They are infringing the law; let us
see how they can defend themselves, as they can hardly argue any
defense," said Cabello.

Subject: [HCDX] Congo suspends Radio France International frequency
Message-ID: <[email protected]>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

http://www.reuters.com/article/industryNews/idUSTRE56Q55R20090727
KINSHASA (Reuters) - The Democratic Republic of Congo has suspended
transmission of French broadcaster Radio France International (RFI), a
government spokesman said on Monday.

Information Minister Lambert Mende said transmission of RFI had been
stopped across the central African nation Sunday, but declined to give
further details.

"Yes, the signal was cut off," Mende told Reuters, adding a news conference
would be held Tuesday to explain the decision.

The government shut down one of RFI's six frequencies in May, accusing a
reporter of inciting unrest, and had said it may extend the ban further.

RFI reported earlier this month that the National Congress for the Defense
of the People (CNDP), a former rebel group, had stopped participating in the
implementation of a peace agreement in the troubled North Kivu province.

The government has denied the report and CNDP secretary general
Kambasu Ngeve told Reuters his party was still involved in the
implementation of a peace deal.

The government has long criticized RFI's coverage of Congo and expelled
its reporter from the country during the campaign leading up to presidential
elections in 2006 -- the nation's first democratic polls in over four decades
--
which confirmed Joseph Kabila as president.

However, RFI continues to report on Congo from its headquarters in Paris.

** ALASKA. KNLS IS on both 9780 and 9795, July 28 at 1301, introducing Chinese
hour, with as usual Chinese radio war QRM on the former (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA [non]. Still no CFRX audible here on 6070, tho it may be on QRP, July
28 at 1235, just the North Korean roar (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake check July 28: at 1247 on 8400 and better on // 9000. At
1308 poor on 14430, better on 13970, best on 15150. At 1311 on 17470 about
equal to 15150. At 1315 also good on 11300 // 15150 and still at 1354. 11300 is
more erratic, but when it`s on must wreak havoc on East African aero
communications, including probably Chinese planes trying to contact ATC, but
it`s far more important to the ChiCom that Sound of Hope be jammed, than
aeronautical safety be enhanced. At 1358 Firedrake fair on 13500, another
non-daily one; and believe I heard a brief snatch of FD around 15412 but went
off at 1359 before I could downpin it; there was a het, and previously has
blocked V. of Tibet varying around here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 9525-, chalk up another Tuesday for VOI`s long-running Exotic
Indonesia series with RRI Banjarmasin, July 28 at 1319 ending news, march music
bit, VOI ID with usual three frequencies, 67 percent of which are always
incorrect, URL, banter with Banjarmasin guy giving his FM frequency, back to
Jak for Today in History feature, starting with July 28, 1794, something about
the French Revolution, and later Jackie Kennedy`s birthday. 1326 Focus on the
rice forecast for 2010y (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Some more sporadic E TVDX on July 28: 1812 UT on channel 3, Canal 5
promo with 5 logo in upper right, and animation set in Northern Australia,
could not detect any Oz accent in the dubbed Spanish. At 1821 also was getting
Canal 5 promo on channel 5, first audio, then video too. And unIDs on 2 and 4
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. RRI, 15435, July 28 at 1314, fair with Romanian folk music, Chinese
announcements mentioning Romania more than once (or however you spell that in
Chinese, let alone English). This is 67 degrees from Tiganeshti at 1300-1330.
No jamming audible: how about that! One country with the blessing of SAFRT.
Does that mean Bucharest never reports any news offensive to the ChiCom? RRI on
25m has not been making it much lately, tho there was some sign of Romanian on
11920 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SERBIA [non]. The uncertain future of International Radio Serbia on SW led
us to recheck their English to NAm; it was still there on 9675, July 28 at 0037
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WEWN missing again from all three transmitters, July 28 at 0519,
nothing on 7555, 11520 or 11870. Even the higher ones are normally audible here
in the nightmiddle.

But it was temporary, as a few hours later, 1246, back on 7555 with mass; at
1305 on 11530, 11550 and 12050 as usual (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WINB still carrying `Tony Alamo`, easily recognizable conversing with
a female, his very late wife Susan? July 28 at 1248, mentioning that Catholix
``don`t know The Lord``. Trouble is, The Overcomer is still scheduled during
this hour, not Al?mo. In Al?mo`s former WWCR slot, again July 28 at 1307 black
gospel music instead (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WWCR again missing from 13845, July 28 at 1307, tho very good on
15825, superstrong as usual on 9980, and audible on 7490. So the DGS/PMS
University Network is outletless in the USA, but still available from Anguilla
on 11775. I suppose same WWCR transmitter is missing from 5935 at night, tho
unchecked (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. As expected, the YFR tests via Ascension are no longer heard on
9835, but instead on 7235 July 28 at 0037, Harold Droning. Also no longer heard
on 9935 which was via Guiana French (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

the Colombo premises. Main Engineer of the SLBC Wimal Priyadarshana says
this heighten the listening quality of national radio. New digital archives
has also been set up in order to conserve old and important tapes and
records of the national radio. SLBC archives is the leading electronic media
archives in the Asian Region.

Meanwhile SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe says media can achieve an
enormous task in enhancing relationship between the Sinhalese and Tamil
communities. National radio has started several projects in order to achieve
this responsibility. MR.Samarasinghe revealed these facts at a media
briefing held Colombo to introduce the latest radio drama series produced by
Young Asia Television Company. These dramas will be broadcast on Wednesdays

Bhutan Broadcasting Service on 6035 is running on low power using the old
transmitter as the new transmitter was giving some problem & is currently
off air. Weak signals noted this morning.
