ABC Radio bands with commercials to promote digital

The ABC will officially launch its digital radio stations this week in time for
a nationwide event involving over 40 stations promoting DAB+.Commercial and
public broadcasters alike will host an outside broadcast on 6 August in five
cities called Radio United, though Sydneysiders were close to missing out.
While digital radio in Sydney was due to go online in early June, poor weather
prevented interference testing from being completed and the signal went full
strength on 21 June.

Deutsche Welle, Victers to promote educational programming in India

Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) has signed an agreement
with India's first dedicated educational channel setup on Edusat,
i...@school-victers.

The agreement will offer schools and students across the country an opportunity
to access more than 200 hours of Deutsche Welle's educational television
programmes. These include Mouse TV along with other documentaries and videos
covering science, medicine, waste management, workplace safety, water, world
cultures and the animal kingdom.

Deutsche Welle head - distribution Asia/Australia Angelika Newel says, "This
new partnership offers Deutsche Welle a great platform to reach out to students
in schools in India. We are confident that our brand of edutainment will be a
hit with both students and teachers."

Adds i...@school- Victers executive director Anvar Sadath, "This association
between DW and Victers would provide students in Kerala with the opportunity to
see and understand advanced educational video content of international
standards which would enable them to think beyond the box to analyse what they
learn at school."

Alaska, 7370.00, KNLS, 1059-1115 Noted an interval signal briefly
before a male in Russian language comments. This is fillowed with
music - male singing. After one a female talks in Russian. Signal
has improved from a threshold to a good. (Chuck Bolland,
August 3, 2009)

Taiwan, 7445, Radio Taiwan International, 1108-1120, Noted a
female in English language comments . At 1109 she gives
ID as: "... English language ... brought to you by Radio Taiwan ..."
This is followed by others briefly in English comments. Signal
was poor. No jamming noted, so I guess the Chicoms don't
care what the English hear from Taiwan? (Chuck Bolland, August 3, 2009)

I have been receiving a VOA/HCJB DRM transmission on 9,405 kHz from 0205
tune in. I was re-installing the Dream software on my PC this evening,
and just happened upon this test transmission as I was scanning for a
DRM transmission to test my set up. Not sure which transmitter this one
is originating from.

Programming has been VOA Music Music until 0300, then News followed by
American Gold program, featuring "Rock's First 10 Years, Part One".
Signal quality is very good, and the DRM audio stream is 20.90 kbps
mono. There are also images being sent, VOA and HCJB logos.

Also, DRM listeners beware. Earlier this year I received image files
sent via DRM from a TDF test transmission that contained viruses! My
virus software picked them up as soon as they downloaded, but I was
quite surprised to say the least and contacted TDF to let them know.
They seemed surprised also. Of course, the image files received during
this VOA transmission were clean.
