MONGOLIA 7470 R. Free Asia (via Mongolia) 1229 Chinese Pop-like mx then canned
EG ID by M as "This is R. Free Asia. The following program is in Tibetan", and
pres. pgm promo by W to 1230. Didn't realize RFA was relayed via Mongolia.
Co-channel QRM from another stn of equal strength. Just got an e-mail from
Valerie Johnson at VOA who said to supply my addr for a confirmation. (12 Nov.)
UNID. 7235v Ethiopia?? Signal on the air at 1305:30 on 7234.98, drifted down to
7234.96 in 2 min., then drifted up to 7235 and under VOA by 1310 where it
stabilized for about 8 min. At 1318 it was on the move upward again getting up
to 7235.1 by 1331 and then drifted back down to 7235.05 by 1345. Too close to
VOA and too much QRM from the "Classroom" Ham net. (12 Nov.)
13 NOVEMBER 2012: Decided to see what could be heard in the early afternoon
from the micro-DXpedition QTH. Wanted to get started before 1800 but didn't
make it. Don't think I missed anything. Highlights were Hargeysa, Oman, and
Djibouti. Nice listening with absolutely no local noise.
RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 70°.
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 1805-2105 UTC
Solar Indices: Didn't check, although the Solar Flux quickly shot up from 122
(before I left) to 146 (by 0030 later). And there were R2 radio blackouts all
day.
WX: Mostly cloudy. Chilly, around 32°.
ZANZIBAR 11735 ZBC R. Already getting a fair signal w/strange chanting at 1805.
1945-2040+ long speech w/frequent ments of Zanzibar, and Tanzania. (13 Nov.)
NIGERIA 7254.93 V. O. Nigeria Nothing at 1806. Tlk by W w/what sounded like a
remote rpt, so prob. nx. Getting pounded by Hams though. Strong at 1950 w/EG
feature. (13 Nov.)
IRAN 6205 V.O. Islamic Rep. of Iran 1807 tlk by W in lang. Somber piano mx 1827
and off. (13 Nov.)
Getting audible signals on 5955 V.O. Vietnam via Austria, 5970 CRI via Albania,
5980 V.O. Turkey, 5990 R. Romania Int. and 6039.96 R. Tirana at 1810. (13 Nov.)
BELARUS?? 7255 R. Belarus (tent.) Signal here at 1822. Must be Belarus. This is
the worst part of the band; strongest and most abundant Hams. (13 Nov.)
SOMALIA 7120 R. Hargeysa 1825 mx very weakly. Definite HoA mx at 1831. Took the
amp out at 1832. M anncr at 1833. Stronger and IDable at 1853 w/tlk by 2 men.
Nice ID at 1856.55. 1858 W w/speech excerpts by M w/roomy audio, then 2 men
again. 1900 HoA vcl mx, deadair at 1901, and off at 1901:40. Not all that
surprised that they were coming in at this time!! So, right now Hargeysa is
heard here at 0330, 1300, and 1830!! Amazing. (13 Nov.)
OMAN 15140 R. Sultanate of Oman Very strong at 1852 w/end of call-in pgm,
promo, then AR mx. Nx after ToH to 1912. No doubt the best ever heard here.
Dropped down drastically and was poor by 1959. Strange conditions. (13 Nov.)

SWAZILAND 6130 TWR Swaziland Was getting 2 signals here at 1918, then caught
usual TWR IS at 1921 while the other stn was in tlk, probably V.O. Russia. (13

NIGERIA 6089.86 R. Nigeria, Kaduna Very weak mx at 1923. M anncr at 1929. In
the clear here but not strong enough. (13 Nov.)
IRAN 6085 V.O. Islamic Rep. of Iran 1929 IS, then W w/ID in Italian, and NA.

SAO TOME 4940 VOA relay First signal showing up on 60 meters at 1932 other than

ETHIOPIA 6110 R. Fana Getting HoA mx at 1947. 2038 usual call-in pgm at this

DJIBOUTI 4780 RTV Djibouti Getting mx at 2030. Lively HoA mx at 2041. Long tlk
by M in Afars and more mx. 2100 closing anmnt, then played only about the last
2 bars of the NA, and off at 2103:03. (13 Nov.)
