Season greetings to all of you and a happy 2013 for all of us !

2012 has been an year of disappointment for me in all areas of my life, except
maybe DXing and Aalyiah, and I really hope 2013 is the year where most things
will get to become more stable.

As far as DXing goes though, I found a new way of airchecking music from deep
fringe C-Quam stereo and other even more entertaining long haul LW, MW and SW
signals... It is called Voice recorder and it is definitively more effective
than I expected at first.

The 2012 fall was mostly dominated by MW Latins including 2 or 3 seldom heard
stations, while the very last few days, with the very low geomagnetic activity,
were mostly dominated by LW Trans-Atlantics, although nothing necessarily
unusual, most of those were really pleasant catches. Talking about Longwave
Broadcast DXing, Iceland-189 is having transmitter issues lately on, with
transmitter popping on and off every few minutes, sometimes every few seconds,
for about 2 seconds at a time.

Enough chatter, into the logs:

Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu, DXing using an AIWA portable with PK loop for
LONGWAVE and an assortmenent of PK MW loop and Select-A-Tenna on the Sony
CFS-3000 for MEDIUMWAVE, also using the Hyunday car radio with it`s antenna on
the back of the window shield for MEDIUMWAVE

Trans-Atlantic DX:

162 FRANCE France Inter, Allouis DEC 7 around 0100 - with a talkshow about
ships and about the importance of ships. Huge, strongest TA on band !
(Chiochiu*Verdun-QC)

171 MOROCCO Medi 1, Nador JAN 2 0124 - Woman hosting a show of eclectic
Arabic mx, both Middle Eastern and North African music, ranging from Rhythmic
CHR to traditionnal plaintive religious Arabic vocals. Huge at this time,
though with LONG and deep fades (like a LONGwave signal) and sometimes with
some slight nulled hum, apparently coming from a powerline radiating something
odd at such a low frequency. (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

183 GERMANY Europe 1, Felsberg DEC 28 0610 - with a news item about Fran?ois
Hollande. Sometimes huge, though with deep fadings ! (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

189 ICELAND Rikisutvarpid / RUV 4, Gufuskalar JAN 1 2100 - slowly fading in
at this VERY early time with a jazz concert, BUT every few minutes and
sometimes EVERY few seconds, it stopped broadcasting for 2 or 3 seconds, before
resuming the transmission. Is it a transmitter failure ? I have made a few
recordings with a Voice Recorder, but I`m not sure how conclusive they are,
though maybe they are worth sharing. (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

198 UNITED KINGDOM BBC Radio 4, Droitwich - very weak under 2 different NDBs
at all the times tried. They are strong everywhere on this side of the pond,
but in the Montreal area they get seldom too strong, I think even Morocco-171
is stronger than them. Anyway, maybe I just didn`t try enough.
(Chiochiu*Verdun-QC / Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

Pan-American DX:

600 CUBA CMKV, Radio Rebelde, Urbano Norr?s (Holgu?n area) DEC 30 around 2400
- playing dark-edged Cuban salsa show until DEC 31st 0000 GMT, then
propagandistic talk. //710 and 1180. I thought //560 was up for a check, but it
was clock-jammed with domestic QRM, so couldn`t be really sure. Anyway, have
not heard this for a while, but it used to be very regular the last season.
Maybe they finaly improved their supposedly 150 kW rig. Heard near the Fairview
parking lot ! (Chiochiu*Pointe-Clerc-QC)

640 VENEZUELA YVQO, Union Radio, Puerto La Cruz, Anzo?tegui NOV 10 0130 -
with a baseball fame promoting the Caribes of the Aragua state (the Villa Cura
area) against the Magallanes of Caracas. Floating above the 640 domestics at
this time, with Cuban Progreso not much in evidence. After it being an almost
nighttime occurance during the 2002-2003 season and even before, it is now
seldom heard. Probably running lower power than it did 10 years ago, perhaps
due to the fuel availability as suggested by nuestro compa?ero DXista Jorge
Garc?a Rangel in Barinas, Barinas, YV land. (Chiochiu*Verdun-QC)

750 VENEZUELA YVKS, RCR, Caracas, Distrito Federal NOV 9 2320 - speaking
during a talkshow with persons that were apparently hold ``sequestrados`` by
bad weather or such, followed at 0000 NOV 10 UTC by the same baseball game as
carried on YVQO-640, except the Magallanes of Caracas where the leading team.
Very, very commun reception everywhere, even easier than Radio Coro.
(Chiochiu*Verdun-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM Radio Coro, Coro, Falc?n JAN 1 0438 - dude inviting his
listeners to call him to greet the radio stations ! Excellent signal at times,
though quite often in slop from local-like WABC-770 on the low side and from
real local CJAD-800 on the high side. In general, Latin American MW signals not
too impressive lately. (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

900 VENEZUELA YVMD, Mara Ritmo 900 / CRV, Maracaibo, Zulia OCT 31 0005 -
``h?ra Venezuela`` grabbled ID, heavy interference from Radio Progreso and
CHML. Tentatively NEW, as there is no other YV on 900 kHz ! ? Segunda vez que
estoy llegando hacia el estado Zulia ! (Chiochiu*Verdun-QC)

900 CUBA CMKP, Radio Progreso, Cacocum JAN 1 0314 - woman announcer just told
her listeners they were about to keep the party going on until 3 AM, for the
New Year`s Day. Good, but fadey and impossible to keep a solid null on CHML
Hamilton, Ontario, even by using 2 loops besides the radio`s ferrite bar
antenna; the very low geomagnetic activity must have been for something.
(Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

1130 VENEZUELA YVRL, Radio Ideal, Macuto, Distrito Federal OCT 31 0006 -
Apparent Spanish music way under semi-aurorally subdued WBBR. Tentative log
based on having it IDed last March during a more severe geomagnetic storm.
(Chiochiu*Verdun-QC).

Bogdan speaks: They were other Latins, particularly on 910, but with WLAT often
using day power at night with a Spanish tropical format, it is hard to
distiniguish RQ-910 or Radio Cadena Agramonte from their contagious tropical
fare. Bits and pieces of broadcast audio was heard on longwave ABOVE 200 kHz,
but never good enough for listening efforts to be done. Most of the interesting
channels remain between 153 and 198 kHz, no matter what, at least on longwave.

I also did some AM stereo listening, but nothing special, so I didn`t bother to
include those listening experiences there, at least not in this report.

I hope most of you had a nice Xmas and I wish anyone a good year of 2013 !
May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Chiochiu
Btw.: Sound bites of distant receptions are coming, to those of you that are
interested.

Hi Walt,

Nobody knows exactly the LATEST shortwave schedule of Voice of Russia,
started now from 2nd January. The website of Moscow in all languages ??is
the most terrible thing that's I've seen in 40 years doing DX editing.

No broadcasting schedules in French, German, Portuguese and Spanish can be
found at all, not to mention of Chinese and other exotic languages.

The journalists at Radio Moscow broadcasting house don't have understood at
all, that their station activity was once again made smaller by at least 80
percent.

But we are used that method since Soviet times. There is no wheel turn in
the USSR or Russia era, the Orthodox holidays until 6 January stop damps
each activity.

I had assumed "Someone from the DX community" worldwide would help me in the
24 Hours investigation job. Unfortunately negative.

Tomorrow when I have leisure time again, I'll put an actual VoRUS plan
together of 24hrs in Russian, and another different for the foreign
languages??. Now I go to bed. Good night.

regards de wolfy df5sx
