73, (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** AUSTRALIA [and non]. Drastic cuts are underway at Radio Australia.
9965, Jan 13 at 1358, no signal any more from the PALAU relay which had been
scheduled at 1300-1430. In BDXC-UK yg, Mike German had heard it as recently as
Jan 11 at 1353. But in the January issue of BDXC-UK Communication we see this:
``The ABC has announced major cuts to Radio Australia shortwave transmissions.
>From 1 January all overseas relays (via Dhabaya, Kranji and Palau) will end..
>From 1 January all shortwave transmissions to Asia will cease.
>From 31 January the Brandon shortwave site will close.
>From 31 January output from Shepparton will be reduced from six full time
>transmitters to only three transmitters, all operating 24 hours per day with
>the following schedule:
0900-2100 on 6080 6150 9580
2100-0900 on 15240 15415 17840
(Radio Australia via WRTH via Jan BDXC-UK Communication via DXLD)``
So the date for closing Palau relay must have slipped, but note what`s coming
at monthend if that stix: We will no longer have numerous other RA frequencies,
such as 19000, 15300, 13630, 12065. Best of the lot remaining, if still on same
azimuths toward N America, should be 9580 and 17840.
Jan 13 at 1356 I am still hearing RA on 5940, 5995-Brandon, 9475 [WTWW silent],
9580, 12065. I think I heard 12085 recently too, which was for Asia, so that
also lasted past Jan 1 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CHINA. 15745, Jan 12 at 1445, CNR1 jammer, poor-fair: vs. VOA Tibetan via
Thailand during this hour only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 11860, Jan 13 at 1508, open carrier/dead air from RHC, while still
modulating on 11760, and 11950 is already off. At 1509, 11860 is turned off too
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** FRANCE. 7390, Jan 13 at 0648, once again RFI in French is beneath a stronger
unmodulated carrier far enough away to cause a fast SAH. Is it another Issoudun
transmitter? Albania fired up early? Or maybe a closer utility in what is
really a fixed band? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GREECE. 9415, Jan 13 at 0641, ERTOpen in Greek, good with flutter, // 9935,
poor with flutter. The Avlis SW facility could be in danger. Christos Rigas,
Chicago, forwarded this to the DXLD yg:
Most powerful Greek Radio transmitter looted by burglars after having been
abandoned
Destruction of the allegedly most powerful medium wave transmitter of the Greek
public broadcasting Service was reported during the Christmas holidays, few
days after the power disruption ordered by the administrators of the estate of
former ERT who reside in Athens. As reported by the local press, the burglars
took advantage of the interruption of transmitions, invaded the transmitter
facilities in Kalithea Rhodes [1260 kHz, only 100 kW per WRTH 2015] and took
loot. They stole all precious metal of the transmitter and its facilities, the
cost of which exceeds EUR 100,000.``
[. . .] read the rest!
Source: http://www.thegreekradio.com/node/9756
``Apart from the Rhodes transmitter, the mediumwave transmitters of ERA Sport
and Filia Radio in Megara and other regional facilities were lost after having
been looted in a similar way, whereas the Ministry attempted to sell the metal
of the Avlida shortwave transmitter for recycling`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDIA. 13640, Jan 13 at 1511, 1 kHz tone, poor signal, 1513 AIR IS starts
before the 1515-1600 Gujarati service, 500 kW, 240 degrees from Bengaluru (and
per Aoki to be followed by Persian, Arabic, French until 2030, but colliding
with Iran in English on same at 1920-2020). Music still audible with flutter
during Persian at 1714 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** ISRAEL [non]. (9395), Jan 13 at 0530 check of Global 24 Radio webcast,
Israel Radio is still being relayed from WRN for morning newscast until 0545,
despite not appearing on the G24 program schedule. Evidently daily except Sat
instead of NHK for a full hour. As long as it last, this puts Israel back on
the SW map but how many listings will note it?
BTW, Keith Perron says he is pulling all PCJ Radio programming off Global 24 as
of Jan 12, for lack of contact with the management (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH [non]. 5910, Tue Jan 13 at 1355, Shiokaze fair with Chinese,
piano, still here from JSR Tokyo (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OMAN. 15140, Jan 13 at 1430, very poor signal, YL talking maybe in English
news as scheduled from RSO; 1448 back to music, now only poor. Ivo Ivanov had
noted this frequency missing Jan 8 and 9 at least (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1755 monitoring: confirmed Monday Jan 12 at 2201 on
Global 24 via WRMI 9395. Next:
Wed 0401 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
Wed 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
Wed 1415 on WRMI 9955
Wed 2200 on WBCQ 7490v
Wed 2201 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also ISRAEL [non]
** U S A. 17775, Jan 13 at 1434, JBA carrier, maybe KVOH; next check at 1447
it`s inbooming. One of these mornings I may monitor continuously to hear the
MUF shoot up, if that`s what`s happening over this sun-rising path (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 5085, Jan 13 at 0650, WTWW-2 is off. It had been running 24h(?) with
rock music. Tuning up to 5830 for WTWW-1, that cuts off SFAW at 0650* just as I
tune in! Next check at 1357, all WTWW transmitters off --- no 5085, 5830, 9475,
9930 (and at this hour 12105 would not be on anyway). Still nothing on any of
them at 1435, 1449, 1506 rechex.
Another check at 1715, all still seem off --- but wait, 9475 is on with PPPP
but very poor signal, must be only a few kW, e.g. compared to 9980 WWCR
blasting in. R. Australia is also on 9475 allegedly until 1900, for now, so at
1728 I rerecheck to be positive which one I`m hearing: yep, no possible
confusion between the preposterous proclamations of pass? PPP, and what would
be rational talk from RA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 920, Jan 12 at 0643 UT, `Coast to Coast AM` interview about Bigfoot,
loops NW/SE --- strangely, no sign of KYFR in IA, Family Radio with Harold
Camping or religious music which usually dominates from the NE. Searching C2C
station list, only fit is KVEL in Vernal UT; others on 920 in MI, OH, RI, CA.
KVEL night pattern is supposed to head NE with 1 kW, but must be on day pattern
of 5 kW ND. I`ve heard it several times before (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** U S A. 1150, Jan 13 at 1343 UT, ``11-50 Oldies Radio`` and PSA with 915 AC,
then Beatles` ``Can`t Buy Me Love`` from E/W. So it is of course KHRO El Paso
TX again, 5000/380 watts U1 but it`s still before sunrise. Dominating rather
than KSAL from the north (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
