La Rosa de Tokio es un programa dedicado a difundir el apasionante mundo de la
radio y del diexismo que se transmite semanalmente desde los estudios de LS11
Radio Provincia de Buenos Aires.
Este fin de semana dedicaremos nuestro programa a hacer una revisi?n historica
de la radiodifusi?n en la ciudad de Santa Fe, capital de la provincia de Santa
Fe

Finally have finished compiling my FM and TV DX during the huge Es opening June
23. Altho this report is about that only, to be consistent as I habitually make
all-band reports circulated to SW-only lists as well, so is this. I beg your
indulgence: delete if you have absolutely no interest in FM/TV DX. The Mexico
part is LONG --- if I find it has been chopped for length somewhere, will
follow-up with further parts. USA logs are in a separate post. Any help with
unIDs, inconsistencies, will be MUCH appreciated!
** MEXICO. After a morning of sporadic-E TVDX on June 23, with the MUF up to at
least channel A5, 76-82 MHz, I keep the ATS-909 on 88.1 waiting for it to reach
the FM band. Finally something starts to show, all times UT:
88.1, at 1747 Spanish adstring overtakes KWOU Woodward OK, which is easy to do,
marginal here, mentions Plaza las Palomas; Suprema Corte PSA (of which many
more would be heard later); 1750 jingle but can`t copy. Plaza las Palomas chex
out as top hit for Zamora, Michoac?n as in log below a few minutes later; tho
there could be others in Mexico.
Logistically, I can`t TV-DX at the same time as FM, as the TV sets are inside
near the noisy computer which puts hash not only on HF but VHF. Tho channels
2-6 are packed mostly with CCI, I will have to miss anything there, as I hasten
out to the hot but shady (~93 degrees) south-facing porch with the PL-880 and
DX-398 using only their whip antennas, which I can manipulate rapidly to
counter QRM from OK and KS stations, and other DX stations. I could do the same
from air-conditioned 2nd floor radio room, but that would increase the
groundwave QRM. One set of headphones, and monitoring two frequencies at once
most of the time. Preferably the DX-398 when there`s enough signal for RDS to
decode; the PL-880 when better selectivity is needed, or fine-tuning.
I have my hands full in a heavy opening, so no accessories, such as recorder or
camera to photo RDS displays (and no post-opening tasks like
recording-reviewing as a result, except this compilation). Not even frequency
lists at hand during most of the opening, accessories only after the fact. All
received in real time by my own ears on my own receivers.
``Double quotation marks`` transcribe what I heard; `single marks` denote
program titles as in all my reports. [anything in brackets, such as call
letters, are not heard but from listings in C:ant? or W:TFDA] {items in braces
are RDS readouts with fields divided by / and not a single one of these was
scrolling. Spaces I sometimes indicate by _ here but just blank-s on the
screen}. Everything seems to be in stereo, (or at last stereo pilot icon even
if mono content, e.g. phoners), sometimes specified as $. If something such as
music were definitely in mono I would specify that. PTA = prime target area.
Altho in chrono order, I`m grouping several items together by frequency when
they are the same station heard at successive times. But not unusual for there
to be two DX stations fighting it out and separating them is not always clear.
Rapidly scribbled notes plus a day or three delay in compiling them can make
for unintended ambiguities. Assume language is Spanish, u.o.s.
90.7, at 1759, some non-Spanish music, frequency ``90.7`` in Spanish. At 1800,
``Red Nacional, Noti-Sistema informa``. 1801, PSA for scooping up your dog`s
poop; CCI. 1803 `Muebles Am?rica` ad = furniture store somewhere in the Western
Hemisphere. 1804 ``Noti-Sistema recomienda`` PSA for something other than dog
poop. 1805 jingle ``Noti-Sistema en Red Nacional``. 1806 full ID including
``desde ? 22-89 [partial street address], 200 mil watts, 90.7, se?al noventa,
XH-- FM, una onda de alegr?a``
[C: XHOY Se?al 90, Guadalajara, Jalisco but only 49,970 watts; I suppose an ERP
of 4x is possible]
88.1, at 1802, full ID mentioning Zamora, Michoac?n, 10,000 watts, Las 40
Principales [XHZN]
92.7, at 1803 algo in Spanish, too strong to be Kansas; 1806 educational
discussion. At 1853, ``Deportes-TV`` promo, CCI music, ``Alternativa FM 92.7``,
Aguascalientes, promo something viernes 11 am, sabado 12 mediod?a, en
``Aguascalientes TV, la se?al de todos``, ``Onda Grupera`` promos, another one
plugging a show on Ags TV. I believe that`s the educational ch 6 I have DXed
before and would probably also be getting right now. But 92.7 is:

At 1912, lo fi politix talk show, $; 1913 mentions Cuernavaca, but no station
there, probably still XHRTA. At 1952, ``noticias con Javier Solosan``, about
Gobierno de Aguascalientes, ``92.7, Alternativa``, ``2 con 52 minutos`` YL
automated timecheck; more TV promos, mentions 87.7 FM; including ``Claudia
Berm?dez, Un Mundo Loco, jueves 9 pm``. RDS icon tries to fire, but no reading.
At 1955, ``Aguascalientes TV, la se?al de todos``, ``en Zacatecas,
Ultra-Noticias, 89.9 y 890, con Javier Solosan``, as he resumes. So one is
relaying the other?
93.1, at 1804, music, ``M?sica Rom?ntica``. At 1911, RDS: {ROMANTIK}, yes with
a K; live DJ, timecheck ``2:10 aqu? en Rom?ntica``

doubt another opening from the west. 1813, still two stations, one with news of
Suprema Corte, other with ads. 1814, ``conociendo a M?xico``, CCI; 1815, Senado

but maybe really something else believes in Mexico?
96.5, at 1834, ad for ``Guadalupe, Zacatecas``

102.1, at 1846, romantic music in Spanish, CCI, $, no RDS.
[W: NO stations in Jal., Gto., or Zac.], so look further afield? But nothing
listed with a rom?ntica slogan or format. Of course, ``romantic`` is a
subjective evaluation of the tune playing at the moment, which could certainly
be on many non-primarily-romantic stations. Perhaps this is closest:

100.1, at 1848, Spanish YL ACI to local KVBN-LP 99.9 requiring off-tuning to

No, there is no 100.1 in Iguala, Guerrero; PTA possibilities in Gro., SLP, Ags.
The one elsewhere in Gro. Being:

been a dead giveaway if only were mentioned which state!

jaliscenses``. At 1859, several refs to ``Seis-Siete Radio`` ?, a strange
slogan, ``630``, ``107.1`` among other frequencies, ``Ciudad Guzm?n``,
``cultura, Jalisco``. So it`s
[C: XEJB, C7 Radio, Guadalajara, 29,720 watts]
C7 Radio is also a strange slogan. Note that this is one of the few ancient FM
stations in Mexico derived from an original XE- AM call, which means you will
miss it searching the WTFDA DB for XH- calls on the frequency, but instead
this:

Going back and searching for XE- calls on 96.3 gets the original:

efectivo``; 1941 ad for Laboratorios Vitala(?) for blood sugar measurement

Diputados (can you imagine the US House or Senate requiring radio stations to

field for quite a while. Ad for tortillas de m?iz; Casa Popular Pio XII; art

which I may have missed earlier: {90.3 FM}; 1946 romantic music and
educational talk, about reforma educativa, mentions Oaxaca, back to someone on
phone. Anyhow, XHQS is per

/ FLLO / XHQS}. I couldn`t figure out this strange ``FLLO``, until it dawned on
me: short for Fresnillo, which has one too-many letters for an RDS field! So
now, what does B-15 refer to? 2026, ``Escuchas Grupo F?rmula; son las 3 con 25
minutos``, into romantic music. Radio F?rmula is a nationwide grupo with a wide
variety of mostly music format formulas
depending on the market, http://www.formula-musica.mx/ but I can`t find a
specific station list on it website, and the name F?rmula does not appear in
either list for any 90.3 station.
87.75, at 1939, Spanish CCI, including news by YL; Aguascalientes?
90.1, at 1949, $, romantic music, RDS: {PSNAME00} static display, i.e. factory
default! Never set up properly. 1952, live DJ, ``m?s m?sica`` sounds ranchera
now, maybe different station? See earlier 90.1 entry
93.5, at 1956, also in Spanish, ACI, CCI; 1957 ``Multimedios Radio, Enlace``,
news about violence in Nuevo Le?n, Saltillo, Coahuila, many other places.
Multimedios not mentioned in either listing for this frequency; group info
often needs to be researched elsewhere; and there are also syndicated news-only
networks. There are two 93.5s in Jalisco, one in Guanajuato as earlier heard,
and also XHQC, Stereo Saltillo. Multimedios, with HQ in Monterrey and most of
its stations are in northern Mexico, http://www.mmradio.com/estaciones.php
including Saltillo on 93.5, but also one in Guadalajara, but it`s on 89.3, so
93.5 must really be:
[C: XHQC Stereo Saltillo, 15,000 watts].
At 2001, ``Est?reo Saltillo`` ID, hosts wrapping up show slightly late until
tomorrow morning.

may be sub-title rather than main station name. It`s also possible this RDS
field may have been picked up on another frequency I previously punched up
which had not been overwritten. W has only one L?der in its entire XH-

97.1, at 2037, Spanish sports talk, mentions Pachuca, ACI from local KQOB 96.9.

** U S A. After some 10 hours of Mexican TV and FM DX, with Mexico still in, I
start to get some American sporadic E DX, which I am compiling here separately.
For description of the setup, etc., see MEXICO. All times UT on June 23, soon
to be 24:
88.3, at 2351, Spanish about ``la palabra Milenio`` en Apocalipsis
(Revelation), and more Bible study. This overt religious broadcasting you don`t
hear much from Mexico where it is officially banned, altho some few stations do
get around it. So suspect I am now getting something from USA. 88.3 is our
lowest most-open FM frequency as long as the F?mily Radio translator in Enid
remains as kaput as Camping. In fact Family Radio is listed on 88.3, KPHF in
Ph?nix AZ, but we know it`s a rare share-timer with the other 88.3 there which
I definitely ID next, while I was getting both of these QRMing each other. KPHF
appears also to share the same transmitter with KNAI, and there is no
indication KPHF is in Spanish. What it really is: see slightly below.
88.3, at 2357, Spanish, address on Camelback, and I-17, CCI to above religious
station. That intersexion is a dead giveaway for Ph?nix AZ; 2358 ad for Harry`s
Bank (? Sounds rather informal --- oh, it`s Harris Bank operating in AZ), 602
area code, and for Jones Law Firm; 2358 ID in English ``nuestra bandera, 88
point 3 FM, La Voz de la ---?, La Campesina``. I also heard if a few years ago
when it was just as blatantly commercial, and traced to founder C?sar Ch?vez.

About my method of DXing and reporting: my objective is not to rack up station
totals; indeed I have no idea what they would be in some 60 years of DXing.
Sorry, but my eyes glaze over seeing long lists of logs, one-liners with no or
minimal details, tho they save a lot of space in printed bulletins. And is it
really of interest to anyone but the logger, whether an item is NEW or not? I
recall that a few of mine this day were logged previously, but don`t keep track
with any tally.
Instead, I enjoy learning more and more about geography, culture, business,
radio station practices, language, etc., etc. ? each log a potential learning
experience; and often the subsequent challenge of figuring out an ID from clues
logged. So the more detail the better. Also, my observations can be added to
database info where lacking.
I long ago quit actively collecting QSLs, so these details are not to convince
a station I heard them. But SHAME upon anyone who would use my details to
garner undeserved QSLs, pretending they actually DXed the stations. I feel this
is hardly a real problem since most of the stations could be ``pretend-DXed``
on webcasts now anyway, if one is really so dishonest (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX

too much signal on 11780 and defective: June 27 at 11808-11825, 11735-11755,
11704-11717 approx., filthy crackling spur ranges, and the fundamental is also
splattering out to 11767-11795. Can`t detect even a carrier from Argentina on

** CHINA [non?]. JBA carrier on 21550, talk? 0604 June 25, scheduled for IBB

nightmiddle signal on 13m, RFA Tibetan/Chinese. Propagation is still subnormal

off, awaiting parts to fix the transmitter; Colombian music, poor signal, very

one about 9964.8, the other close to 9965.0. Not clear which one is trying to
modulate

on-frequency. You`ll recall we discovered in FCC Query data that XEDP has two
different transmitter sites a considerable distance apart, ergo two different
transmitters, one of which is off-frequency (it would be inconvenient to move
it back and forth every few days). At 0604 I can make out the Mexican NA
playing. Why don`t KCMO and KGNC raise a ruckus about this international

** MEXICO. 1060, June 27 at 0203, tune-in to partial ID ``La Poderosa, 93.9, la
estaci?n de todos``, ranchera music. There are only two or three Mexicans on
1060, and it`s not XEEP, so likely the new XERDO in Reynosa. WTFDA and Cant?
show two Poderosas on 93.9, one in Le?n, the other in the XERDO area, Reynosa
per Cant?, XHRAW but with power ironically missing; per WTFDA it`s in Ciudad
Miguel Alem?n, Tamaulipas with a paltry 2.6 kW on FM which is about right for a
station needing to claim to be ``powerful``. But neither connects XHRAW with
XHRDO. Cant? had XERDO as La Radio in yet another border city, Matamoros, 7/2.5
kW. Could there be a USSS station on 1060 with a 93.9 FM? Doubtful; none known

** OKLAHOMA. 960, KGWA Enid: altho I haven`t kept logs, I think I have checked
just about every night for a week now as of June 26 between 0500 and 0505 UT,
never to find a Fox-hole of dead air any more, sob. So Fox ``news`` is whole
again. There could still be screwups at other times, but this was so reliable
--- once dead air started at 0500, I knew it would stay dead until cut back on
at 0505 by when I would have the volume turned down again (Glenn Hauser, Enid,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA. 1120, June 26 at 1945 UT on caradio, KEOR/KETU is on with usual
regional Mexican music, but by 2020 recheck it`s off. Until now it had been
reliably on whenever checked in daytime for a couple weeks. But NEVER heard
with any announcements, no commercials, no IDs, no ``La Picuda`` network plugs
as was previously the case. I have not yet managed the dedication to listen to
this straight thru for a full hour, like :30 to :30 to confirm there are never
any announcements.
Next check on caradio, 0118 UT June 27 it`s on; by 0132 starting to get SAH
from KMOX; back at shack, I keep monitoring from 0144 UT as official FCC sunset
in Catoosa is supposed to be 0145 UT in June and July (and FCC still thinks
it`s KETU, unlike the station when last heard IDing as KEOR). Keeps on playing
music with a segu?, but chopped off the air mid-tune at 0148:35* (Glenn Hauser,

** OKLAHOMA. Something strange has happened with OETA signals. Ever since it
reverted to RF channel 13 following the temporary DTV transition on RF 32
(which was blocked in Enid by KXOK!), I have not been able to get a usable
signal, first with my C-490 all-channel antenna and then with another one for
channel 7 up, permanently aimed toward OKC. All the OKC UHF full-power stations
come thru fine on either, and usually KOCO-7, but not OETA --- continual
breakups in video and audio. I can get 13.1 OETA, 13.2 OKLA via cable, but the
other two channels are available only over the air.
Yet when I try again on the 7+ antenna, UT Thursday June 25 at 0300, now they
are in solid, not breaking up --- well, almost --- occasional IADs, but
bearable if not during music. This means I can axually watch and hear one of
the few programs on 13.3 Create, which looks appealing on the schedule
(mismanaged that evening showing identical programming on 13.1 and 13.2),
`Music Voyager` --- Afro-Colombian Grooves, from Cartagena.
What has changed? Trees all the way across Enid and surely all the way to OKC
are at their DTV-signal-absorbing leafiest, and my 7+ antenna, tho higher than
the C-490, is not very high atop the roof. I have done nothing at this end to
change anything, so has OETA incrementally increased their ERP in this
direxion? They sure need to, or give us a translator, here on the fringe of
coverage from OKC. Reception has continued to be OK the following 48 hours, and
hope it keeps up. Or maybe something in the area causing multipath self-QRM has
moved? But on the C-490, OETA is still breaking up. The other subchannel, 13.4,
is PBS KIDS, useless as far as I am concerned. And 13.1 is full of kidvid all

** U S A. 9330, June 27 at 0146, WBCQ is off; what happened to Good Friends
Radio Network? Did it cut to Allan Weiner Worldwide at 0000 UT Sat? That`s over
