** ALBANIA [and non]. 7465, Jan 23 at *0220, R. Tirana IS starts, only S6;
while Tirana`s ex-frequency, 7470, has only a JBA carrier from Kuwait. Tirana`s
ex-ex-frequency, 7425, has an S3 carrier from that Greenville leapfrog mixing
product 7305/7365 (so GB is still operational despite widespread blizzard power
outages in NC) (Glenn Hauser, oK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6870-AM, Jan 23 at 0105, JBA carrier, less than the S7 noise level.
Presumably the semi-harmonic of 13740 RHC, but with the DX-398 tuned to a
better RHC frequency, 11670, I can`t make a // match as the 6870 signal is just
too weak. No luck at more chex the following hour. At 0122, 13740 reads S6-8,
poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEWFOUNDLAND. 2598-USB, Jan 23 at 0101, YL in English with weather, S8-S9.
Canadian CG site shows starting at 0048 is MCTS Placentia / VCP, with
``Radiotelephony --- Technical marine synopsis, forecasts and wave height
forecasts for marine areas 231, 232, 233, 234, 235, 236, 237 and 238. Weather
and Wave height forecasts for marine area 213``. In a few minutes at 0107 it
must cede the frequency to VOK Labrador via St Anthony.

2598-USB, Jan 23 at 0218 UT, barely audible broadcast mostly under line noise
level, 0219 I can tell it`s French, probably by YL. CG schedule shows it`s one
I haven`t logged before: ``MCTS Port aux Basques / VOJ - Broadcasts, 0207,
Stephenville site, 2598J3E, Radiotelephony (English followed by French).
Technical marine synopsis forecasts and wave height forecasts for marine areas
220, 221, 222 and 231. Weather forecast and wave height forecast for marine
areas 215, 217 and 219`` -- Stephenville is on the southwest side, south of
Corner Brook; Port aux Basques is at the SW corner, the ferry terminal from
Sydney NS, which is how I once got to Nfld without flying (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950.0-USB, Jan 23 at 0102, ``M-F`` song at tune-in, and I
don`t mean Medium Frequency or Monday-Friday. Then I log some other pirates,
and licensed pirate station WBCQ where Allan Weiner is urging pirates now to
use AM, NOT SSB (see WBCQ log for more); back to here at 0120 when blues plays,
0123 ``X-L-R-8`` ID and more music. 0157 check, this one is off. Many other
logs here:

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925-AM, Jan 23 at 0103, JBA carrier, jumps around slightly;
At 0117 it`s on 6925.00-AM with music. At 0200, on 6925.07 variable with
announcement, unreadable. Maybe more than one station involved over this
period. These unID logs suggest Liquid Radio and Radio Gaga:
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,25904.0.html
Channel Z was on frequency later before 0300 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6940-USB, Jan 23 at 0118, tune-in to someone saying he is
``firing things up, hope someone is hearing me`` despite ``crappy conditions``.
If so, post on HF Underground. It`s ``Doctor Benway, Undercover Radio,
broadcasting from the Middle of Nowhere``. Says he has a complete new setup;
does it sound OK? No way to patch in music right now, but will in very near
future. 0120 says he`s going to tune back up to XLR8, address
[email protected], and apparently off for the time being, so I also
tune up to 6950 for now.

6960-USB, Jan 23 at 0202, someone is glad to be heard tonight, and now with
music. Sounds like Benway again on a new frequency; 0206 something about ``A-OK
in the mid-Atlantic area`` (presumably referring to blizzard warnings). Now
he`s S7. Refers to heavy-metal songs; 0211 thanks for checking in to Skipmuck
(an HFU regular), John Poet, et al. (I would do so in real time, except for me,
DXing and Computing are mutually exclusive.) Full ID again as above and
address; then ``We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions``. At HF Underground, he
got two posts under 6940
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,25905.0.html
and fifteen under 6960
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,25906.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6935.32-AM, Jan 23 at 0158, very poor S7 pirate signal with
music, announcement. Can`t make out anything further. No logs of this on HFU or
Free Radio Café (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 7530, Jan 23 at 0142, very poor S6 signal with a conversation;
0214 still there but JBA. HFCC shows IBB Iranawila, 250 kW, 334 degrees so also
USward, 01-04 in Pashto (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TAJIKISTAN [and non]. 7480, Jan 23 at 0143, weak talking vs a whine, bad
transmitter or jammed? Evidently the latter, as 01-02 on 7480 is IBB in Uighur
via Dushanbé, irking the ChiCom who think East Turkistan is theirs. At other
times we often hear different jamming here, stray Cuban-type pulsing (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7489.9-AM, UT Sat Jan 23 at 0103, WBCQ with `Allan Weiner Worldwide`
live from Deland, Florida. Launches right into rant about jamming by North
Korea, Cuba. Last Sunday he was trying to hear WBCQ on 7490 when there was
jamming against Radio Martí splattering 20 kc across the band from 7485 [no,
but there is spurious jamming around 7480, not strong here]. Can`t understand
why Cuba is still jamming when now has relations with the USA. Says the State
Department and other USG agencies listen to WBCQ. Hates public radio because it
means the government is involved in broadcasting, including NPR, CPB and VOA
(later his girlfriend calls that CPB gets only 5% of funding from federal
government; but he dismisses this; don`t be naïve --- later warns about
socialism leading to the total control of communism.)

At 0112 he thinx he`s also on 5110 --- but NOT: see separate log. Whoever wins
the next elexion, he`s going to make a serious effort to be appointed to the
Federal Communications Commission, where he will try to make the 6.9-7.0 MHz
area a recognized ``amateur broadcast band``, promote AM band, and OTA TV.
Pirates should ``cut the SSB stuff for AM; WBCQ is the only licensed pirate
station on the air``. [This is on the PL-880; meanwhile I am logging unlicensed
pirates on the 6.9 MHz band via the NRD-545; see NORTH AMERICA logs].

From then on it`s mostly reminiscing about tubes and various equipment, his
pirate activities of a semicentury ago, with J. P. on the phone as usually the
case. 0226, says the date is January 22, the year of our lord 2014 (oops, one
is supposed to say ``2015``). 0233 finishes reading some logs from Free Radio
Weekly, which has evidently just arrived. 0235 he`s reading e-mail prompted
earlier in the sesquihour, and someone refers to Glenn Hauser`s critique of
jamming, that the expense ought to be spent on feeding the Cuban people (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5109.7-CUSB, WBCQ, UT Sat Jan 23 at 0112, someone talking about
AMTOR, plugs `Danny Mac Rant` (?) UT Wednesdays at 00 on RFD. So it`s Ray
Mahorney on Radio Free Dishnuts, which tested here 3 weeks ago. Is this a rerun
or is this now a regular with new episodes? I did not hear enough of the
original 3 hours to know now. Nor does Allan Weiner, at the same time live on
7489.9 who thinx he is also on 5110, prompting me to check this. Well, not on
the 5110 schedule
http://schedule.wbcq.com/main.php?fn=sked&freq=5110
but it`s often incomplete. At 0124, comments on the campaign with clips from
some other show, and claiming that Wall Street gives more money to Democrats
than Republicans. At 0156, hard rock music; at 0226, a national anthem is
playing, outroed as (not?) Australia`s, then explaining the jargon in `Waltzing
Matilda` and playing a version of it with accordion. After 0200 I am not sure
if this is still RFD, or as still on the above schedule, `Grogcast` at 02-03 UT
Sats.

As for 9330v-CUSB, that had Terry Blalock screaming at 01-02, then off rather
than joining AWWW for the rest of it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 3185, 3195, 3215, 5050, 9370, Jan 23 at 0125 check and ditto at 0216
check (when 3215 is overtaken by WWCR), WWRB is missing from all frequencies.
Maybe due to winter storm/power outage? Other middle-Tennessee stations WWCR
and WTWW are still on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9475, Jan 23 at 0148, WTWW-1 is JBA on day frequency, fine with me,
rather than on night frequency 5830, which has come up by next check 0220, now
blasting in (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1020, Jan 23 at 0135 UT, I am checking for 50 kW KCKN Roswell NM,
which I have heard has got its act together, i.e. restoring its null/protexion
toward Pittsburgh (and Perry, almost, and me). I`m afraid not. Maybe it`s a
little better as now it`s not overriding my semi-local KOKP, but with KOKP
nulled, a Spanish station with religious music is clearly audible, making a SAH
of approx. 4 Hz. 0151 UT, ``para la familia de hoy`` and Spanish hymn; 0158 UT
I`m standing by for an ID, but need nothing more than a mention of something
going on in Hackensack, Nueva Jersey, 201 area code, i.e. source station being
(100%?) relayed, WWRV 1330, Radiovisión Cristiana, Nueva York (Glenn Hauser,
Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 1050, Jan 23 at 0133 UT, dominant signal on ALA-330S
antenna oriented E/W has a New Mexico health PSA, Blue Emu ad; no XEG, and even
when switching to N/S antenna, very little from it, maybe just caught in a
fade, but hardly the 100 kW ND you would expect from Monterrey. So this is KTBL
Los Ranchos NM (Albuquerque), 1/1 kW U3 substation of KKOB 770, with pattern
going all direxions except the southern half of the compass (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6220-USB, Jan 23 at 0111, Spanish 2-way with pauses, sounds like
YL, vs JBA AM carrier, the latter being QRM from the WWCR 7520 minus WNQM 1300
spur carrying WMDB 880 programming. The distressed 2-way could be a legal op,
Mexican maritime (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
