Subject: [HCDX] A NEW DXER'S TOOL - A UNIVERSAL TRANSLATOR ? LA STAR
        TREK!

A NEW DXER'S TOOL - A UNIVERSAL TRANSLATOR ? LA STAR TREK!

Although not perfect, Google's Voice Translator tool can be a great
addition to a DXer's tool box. (Emphasis on CAN BE.)

It is NOT perfect but it works very well, if the languages in question
are in the database and if the audio is clear enough. I have used it to
identify stations I have heard and? figure out the content of a program
to gather program details for reception reports.

There are some quirks in using it that can be annoying. But there are
workarounds.

Basically, it listens to the audio through the computer's microphone and
takes the speaker's words and types them on the screen in the speaker's
language. Google's translator instantaneously translate the words in the
target language. Besides using it live, I have recorded the audio of my
DX catches and played the recordings back through the computer that way.

It is fairly simple to use. You just figure out the language of the
speaker and put it in the left hand side, and enter the target language
on the right hand side. Then just click on the microphone on the left box.

I have not figured out a way to do this without using the computer's
microphone (i.e. line-out to line-in, or in the computer internally.)? I
imagine that someone could experiment and figure out ways to do this.
Also, I have found it does not work at all with Firefox, but it does
work with Chrome and Microsoft Edge.? I imagine there is some
proprietary business going on,

REMEMBER, this is not a panacea, nor does it work in ALL instances, but
it works well in enough cases to be another tool in a DXer's Tool Box.
And while not as efficient as the Universal Translator in the Star Trek
Canon, it is one like the one used there albeit at an embryonic stage.

Below is an example of how this works.? Of course, the translation is
not perfect, but there are enough clues to let you know that this is
likely from Family Radio and there are some reception details that you
can dig out to use for a reception report.? I have used it with Spanish,
Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and a
few others with good success. (I would advise cautionl when writing
reception reports with this, because the translations are not 100%
accurate. To be as sure as possible with what you put in your reception
report, remember that web searches such as DuckGoDuck, Bing, and Google
are your friends.)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, April 23 at 1457, NO LRA36 signal into
four Brasil SDRs, another Saturday absent as in all of April. Still no
reply to my fourth email inquiry, which did not bounce (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL [and non]. 28394 USB, April 22 at 2220, PU2WDX S?o Paulo in
contact with 6Y5CR in Jamaica, both audible in quick check of 10mb.

28420 USB, April 22 at 22232, VK3CWB in NW Victoria contacting Bill in
Florida, and lots more signals. First time Australia heard in long
time and simul with Brasil and Jamaica (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, April 23 at 1605-1630, V of Martyrs Korea,
usual sermon in English, S9/+20 into new Coimbatore, India KiwiSDR,
closing ID and off in time for *1630 Vatican Arabic with much weaker
signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA [non]. 9450 & 9890, April 23 at 1900-1909, NO signals into
Kuwait or South African SDRs, checking for R. Ominira Yoruba as in
last report, which was unheard on 9450 April 21, to which these
replies; from Wolfgang Bueschel:

``only Sat/Sun service? this read on Nagoya Japanese userlist1 data
file of PERSEUS SDR software file accessories:
A22 Shortwave Frequency List April 21 2022, 1000 UTC:
http://www1.s2.starcat.ne.jp/ndxc/pc/us/nda/userlist1.txt
9890 kHz 1900-2400 G Radio Ominira Yoruba Yor Woofferton 17
73 wb df5sx`` --- the 17 means Sunday & Saturday

And from Kai Ludwig April 22: ``9890 kHz was the frequency where these
broadcasts appeared in June 2021. They were supposed to run either Sat
and Sun or perhaps Fri, Sat, Sun. First transmission was on June 6,
and on June 18 the whole thing was already cancelled again, with no
further explanations being given.

So this Perseus software entry is a karteileiche and 9450 kHz rather
the frequency now reserved for attempts to sell this airtime. It would
of course not hurt to check if anything appears tonight or tomorrow,
but I would not be surprised if this turns out to be as substantial as
the wishlist registrations for BBC Russian and 16 hours of English to
eastern Europe...`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** RUSSIA [non]. 9370, Apr 23 at 1912, R. Svoboda in Russian VG into
Khimki, Russia SDR, S9+15/35 with no jamming audible; the crowd-funded
`Shortwaves for Freedom` relay via secret site believed to be ARMENIA;
just checking, still going strong; altho slightly distorted modulation
and crackle (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, April 23 at 0500-0507, UR1 via WRMI. This time
only a brief UU language announcement before switch to English,
`Ukraine: Security Issue`. It always includes a website in .ua, but
the word for `dot` is a lot more complex I have yet to fathom (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2135 monitoring: confirmed Friday
April 22 at 1815 on IRRS SW via BULGARIA, 7290; despite `SW Report`
having started at 1811, but that 30-minute show chopped off at 1815
for IRRS ID & WOR. S9/+10 on 7290 into UTwente; also via AM Italia,
1323 kHz into nearby Noale SDR, but nothing on 918 or 207 kHz. Some
QRMusic under and at 1825 that overcomes in German talk from Romania
minority service. Nothing audible on 14580 = 2 x 7290 into UTwente,
except for RTTY warble on the USB.

Also confirmed Friday Apr 22 at 2030.4 on AM Italia, now both 1323 at
S9+10 and 918 kHz S9+18, no QRM. There was music fill at 2025, 2030
IRRS canned ID asking for reports to the Milano PO box, despite Ron
Norton online publicity denying that postal mail is accepted!

Missed checking UT Sat Apr 23 at 0130 on WRMI 9395; anyone hear it?

Confirmed UT Saturday April 23 from 0359.7 on R. Angela WBCQ 4790,
sufficient into Maryland SDR, as I note the exact times of 1-second
noise burst QRM, or `uteblaaps`. This time exactly 3:00 minutes apart
at 2 seconds past: 0400, 0403, 0406 ... 0427. And an interspersed
3:00-minute cycle at 43 seconds past: 0401, 0404 ... 0428. Timings
correlated with WWV 5000 into same SDR.

Also confirmed Sat Apr 23 at 1600 on WRN N America webcast. Next:

1930 UT Saturday WRMI 15770 to NE
1930vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM

** U S A. (7490v), UT Sat Apr 23 at 0000, WBCQ webcast with `AAAWWW`.
After WTO theme, immediately into a country gospel tune as a request
from someone in Nyack. Allan says he likes Earth Day; the 81 million
who voted for [Biden] are idiots. Rest of first half railing against
the ``war on gender``, [which the Far Right has just made up], causing
him ``disgustment``. Criminals are running the country now. 0032 says
trimulcasting on 7490, 6160, 4790 from Studio 9 in Fla, but never gets
around to a YOOLF datestamp; but we know it`s live and current since
refers to Easter last Sunday. Keeps apologizing for being so
political, 0036 switching to radio stuff. R. Angela may be expanded to
an hour earlier 9-10 pm Eastern [= 01-02 UT]. Reads article about a
longtime pirate on 87.9 on north side of Chicago [we had this weeks
ago]. 0050 bit of a Radio World story about R. Nova, Dublin. 0053
email. 0058 insists that Angela deliver prayer. 0101 JIP Hal Turner
late as usual. Standard disclaimer (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9525.5 USB, April 23 at 0633, JBA 2-way INTRUDERS, can`t
tell if Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
