** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Aug 31 at 1447 tune-in via Argentine
remote, my usual Wednesday check for LRA36: just a few seconds of
shouting, then nothing, but it seemed to sound as if on the signature
off-frequency and maybe a bit of music, so suspect RNASG had been on
for a bit, but caught just as it fracassed! Let Kiwi run another hour
until timeout, and never anything more. Standard remark about maybe
make-good on Friday circa 15 or 18, or more successful Saturday when
they would be replaying Wednesday show anyway. Meanwhile, I need to
start monitoring earlier, NLT 1430ish (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CONGO. 6115, Aug 30 at 0500-0506+, NO signal from R. Congo into the
only RSA KiwiSDR. Then checked direct on this side of the terminator:
0512 & 0533 nothing; 0623 France DRM noise S9+10. At 0615 RSA not
hearing DRM either, but it`s too far, too day.

I am doing this because Manuel Méndez, Spain, has been hearing
presumed Brazzaville reactivated in the evenings. WOR iog posts:

``Manuel: CONGO, 6115, Radio Congo, Brazzaville (presumed),
1824-1843*, 28-08, French, comments, advertisements, some African
songs. Transmission cut off abruptly at 1843. SINPO 15421 to 25422. I
was not able to hear a positive identification, but the program format
coincides with the one I heard so many times from Radio Congo. The
closing time and the abruptly cut off transmission also coincides with
Radio Congo``

Aug 30: ``Dear Manuel, I confirm from my side reception of Radio Congo
here in the South of Italy although I was not able to hear a clear ID
on 28 August around 1800 UT. I posted a 3.20 minute video on DX
Fanzine Facebook page for my reception of Radio Congo. In the next
days I'll check if the broadcast in French (at 1800 they air a long
news bulletin) on 6115 kHz matches with Radio Congo which I can
receive here by satellite. My log will appear in DX Fanzine No. 108
(the shortwave bulletin for which I am the editor) which will be sent
out in a couple of days. Regards. Antonello Napolitano``

``Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain: Radio Congo 6115, on air right now,
1810, 30-08, French, very weak here in Reinante, NW of Spain. Signal
cut off abruptly at 1824``

``Hear if it`s on in the morning. WRTH 2022 said 6115 50 kW 0500-1900
(irreg.); National Network on FM, 0430-2300 with English news at 1900
(approx.) Nikkei Japan should not be propagating that early. France in
DRM after 0600. Glenn``

``Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain: Hi Glenn, I have been testing early in
the morning for the last three days, from 0445 and later and no
signal, no audio, no carrier at this time. In the past when it was
previously active, I've heard it many times around 0500. Best 73,s``

``Hi Manuel, After seeing your WOR iog timely posting about the
reactivation of Radio Congo, I checked 6115 on Aug 29, between 0515 to
0600 UT, but as you also found, no carrier heard at all. Believe that
last time I heard them, they started about 0520? Brazzaville local
sunrise currently is about 0458 UT. Japan currently is not being heard
on 6115 till much later. Back in 2016, Congo certainly was being heard
in August here in Calif.:

CONGO. 6115, Radio Congo (presumed), 0511-0545, Aug 6, 2016. Thanks
very much to Thorsten Hallmann [I very much miss the "africalist" that
he formerly produced - Ron] for the tip; 0511-0531, with alternating
announcers in what certainly seemed to me to be French; 0518 brief
African music; 0531-0545, switched to African vernacular; poor, with
QRN (static). Brazzaville local sunrise at 0506 UTC. No "RN2" (Japan)
QRM; quickly faded out after 0545. My last reception was back on May
19, so very nice to catch them again. My audio https://goo.gl/IWcp0W
(poor quality) (Ron Howard, San Francisco, CA)``

``Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain: Yes, Ron, you're right, it open around
0515 or a little later. Here are some of my logs, years 2020 and
2021

Year 2020: CONGO, 6115, Radio Congo, Brazzaville, 0559-0605, 03-10,
French, comments. Very weak. 14311. Also heard *0524-0558, 04-10,
French, news, comments, ID “Radio Congo”, African songs. 15321.

Year 2021: CONGO, 6115, Radio Congo, *0515-0533, 30-07, African songs,
French, ID “Radio Congo”, comments. 15321. Also *0522-0533, 26-07,
French, news, comments. 15321. Best 73,s``

``Antonio Napolitano: Yesterday 30 August at 1800 UT I heard Radio
Congo with news in French by satellite. Surprisingly, the latest of
major news was the introduction of a new shortwave transmitter! here
is the short announcement: "Radio Congo partout en ondes courtes: un
nouvel émetteur plus efficace a été mis en service aujourd'hui à la
station de ... ". A 1 minute video with the above mentioned summary of
main news from Radio Congo is available on DX Fanzine (the sw bulletin
for which I am the editor) Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/antonello.napolitano.39/videos/635345928151630
It should be assumed that on 28th August when both Manuel Mèndez and
myself, logged the station on 6115 kHz Radio Congo was testing this
new transmitter`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13680, Aug 30 at 2128, digital blaaps like heard on Spy
Number stations no doubt from same Bauta transmitter, but no numbers,
2129 to dead air. Aoki shows 13680 RHC at 1930-2300 in French,
Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, i.e. Eu/ME beam; but EiBi shows to Eu
1930-2100, one hour break, 2200-2300 Spanish to SAm. Something`s
always wrong at RHC. The Other Side:

``Blackouts in Cuba: A Disaster Waiting to Happen
'Aware of the impossibility of lifting Cuba out of poverty and
maintaining absolute power, Castroism decided to deceive the people'

Rafaela Cruz, La Habana 30 Ago 2022 - 02:01 CEST Blackout. Diario de
Cuba...``
https://diariodecuba.com/economia/1661817708_41898.html

[and non] BTW, EiBi mixes in some utility stuff including this nearby
which I have never noticed:
``13683.6 0000-2400 USA CruiseEmail -CW NAm /CAN-fg`` plus 18 other
entries from several sites, most but not all not mixed with
broadcasters. CAN-fg = not a place name but: ``CFG8525 ON
43N52-79W19`` = close to Toronto, Canada.

Searching finds CruiseEmail in trouble with FCC 12 years ago:
``Notified CruiseEmail of its Apparent Liability for Forfeiture in the
amount of $15,000 for operating stations KDS, WGM, and WHX at
locations other than their licensed locations without prior Commission
authorization``...
https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-10-1047A1_Rcd.pdf
But I digress (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, Aug 31 at 0626, RHC English S9+10/20 only 6 MHz channel
still on, but louder and stronger English still on 5040 instead of
usual Spanish if any, S9/+20. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9440, Aug 30 at 2134, JBA carrier direct from R. Cairo, far
too weak to evaluate modulation quality, but I bet we can guess:
egregious.

9439.994, Aug 31 at 2124, R. Cairo S8/9+5 into Maryland SDR, but JBM
presumed English, with whine; probably was blasting into UTwente
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Aug 31 at 0632, JBA but considerable carrier
has to be R. Kiribati, London; amid 9-kHz-step bandscan of entire MW,
this is the only signal: still too late for Eurafrica and/or no
higher-latitude propagation. WRTH suggests the power of RK is 10 kW.

For this season, I remind everyone that this part of far-flung
Kiribati is so far east that it`s at similar longitude to Hawaii, even
tho local time is UT +14! on the west side of the flexible dateline
instead of UT -10.

https://www.gaisma.com/en/location/london-ki.html
is misleading since ``base`` times are displayed as UT+12, i.e.. the
western part of Kiribati! It shows today`s sunset as 19:33 local,
which would be 0733 UT, instead of 0533! And so close to Equator at 2
degrees N that it varies only 29 minutes over the course of a year
from 19:14 to 19:43. But for ``London`` it shows the long. as
157-46-48 EAST which is way wrong, really per further research:
157-28-30 WEST. Compare to Honolulu: 157-51-29 W.

But above gaisma info is still one hour wrong! Perhaps confused by
non-existent DST. This reference has it right:
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/kiribati/kiritimati
with LSS at 18:33 local minus 14 hours for UT = 0433!!!

846 signal eastward should start propagating somewhat before then.
BTW, I may never have pulled any modulation from this, let alone an
ID. I believe those on west coast who get it even more easily have
noted deficient modulation levels. It would be interesting to sit on
846 and note when carrier first appear.

As sunrises laten in Europe, those could confuse things: except the
greatest European is 3 kW from Ireland per WRTH; beyond that, 100 kW
in RSA, 20 in Saudi, 50 in Iran, 20 in UAE, most likely beyond sunrise
earlier. Later in our nights, of course, there will be plenty of other
Pacificasians propagable on 846, so DXing this ASAP is advisable.

Those capable of DFing, which you can`t do with fixed antennas no
matter how high-gain and fancy, obviously, rather than a plain old
loop or ferrite DX-398, might find 846 more interesting as a pilot to
upcoming DU DX condx. From Enid it`s about 253 degrees at 4500 miles,
while Sydney far beyond is close to same angle, about 250. Thus the
846 signal should null about 163/343. This could also help
differentiate it from any possible Trans-Atlantic signals, and
certainly from east Asians (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA [and non]. 7255-, Aug 31 at 0627, no signal from VON. How
about the evening?

7255.0, Aug 31 at 1755 first check into Canary KiwiSDR, no offset
signal, just something very weak within 2 Hz of accuracy, so must be
something else; also HSNL = high storm noise level. Blitzortung shows
closest little storms in occupied Western Sahara, but mostly across
northern Algeria, bleeding into Morocco and Tunisia.

Before and after 1800, JBA music on 7255.0 sounds vaguely Chinesish,
i.e. occupied TIBET as scheduled until 1805. With offset BFO I`m QRX
for shutoff which does happen at exactly 1805* clinching it, leaving
no Nigeria or anything. Still zilch at 1846. No, VON not on 11770-
either, where it`s supposed to be, evenings (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed Aug 30 at 2200, REE token English on Wednesday,
inbooming direct; features after news: 2206 Amy interviewing an ice?
skating exhibitor from abroad; 2214 Justin interviewing a one-man-band
he encountered. Unfortunately I am mainly attentive to BBC World News
America on PBS/OETA1, RF13 KETA at 2200 M-F (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Aug 31 at 2200 insufficient signal from VOT English
direct; 2250 check is JBM, S4/S9, off circa 2255* (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), Aug 31 circa 0500, UR1 via WRMI with
English, `Ukraine: Security Issue` as copied later via:
http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_30_08_22.mp3
with the best-spoken YL announcer, including; for Aug 30 = day 188 of
U`s heroic resistance to R aggression. U launching offensives near
Kherson, methodically destroying R defense systems. IAEA experts
heading to occupied Zap. power plant, to spend 4 days there from Wed.
Kreml unready to withdraw. NPP completely disconnected from energy
supply network. R wages terror on peaceful settlements. Massive
missile attack on civilian center of Kharkiv, and on Mykolaiv. R
destroys infrastruxure of a village. Half of residents have left.
Invaders razing Donbas to the ground (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2153 monitoring: Confirmed Tuesday August 30
after 2230 on WRMI 9955, S9/+10 atop lite Cuban pulse jamming, which
starts to build up by 2253 prior to R. Libertad, but WOR still
readable to conclusion. We are so proud to be so worthy of ineffective
jamming.

Also confirmed Tuesday August 30 at 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9/+15 into
Maryland SDR, much better than S3/S4 into Georgia.

Also confirmed Wednesday August 30 at 2122 the 2100:21 on WBCQ 7490
minus 71 Hz = 7489.929 into Maryland SDR, S9/+10. Next:

0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

** U S A. 9275, Aug 30 at 2132, NO signal from WMLK, supposedly sked
until 2200; propagation is poor, but neighborly neighbor WINB at a
fraxion of rated power manages S4/S5 on 9265. Something`s broken at
Bethel?

9275, Aug 31 at 1837, WMLK is on, what else? Deceased EJOM yammering
about Yahweh, but only S6/S8 into Maryland SDR, too weak to overcome
the noise level; and remarkably off-frequency for a brand-new
super?power transmitter: plus 9 Hz slightly varying: calibration OK
compared to 7850 CHU, and 10000 WWV tho the latter seems under a local
carrier insertion, while inaudible on 5000, 15000 and 20000 kHz.

9265-, while I`m at it, at 1844 Aug 31, I find even weaker AM WINB
neighbor2 cycling between 11 and 16 Hz low (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5970, Aug 31 at 0646, WEWN Spanish is AWOL again tonight.
Have not checked whether viable earlier in evenings; is it? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1010 kHz, Aug 31 at 0645 UT, OL preaching, sounds like
Mother Angelica, deceased. Is there an EWTN here? Yes, new NRC AM Log
shows WCKW Garyville LA, between NO and BR, U1 500/42 watts, but was
silent as of 8/21. Far more likely my closest which I expected to hear
instead of WJXL or CFRB recently: KDJW, U4 5000/500, ``St Valentine
Catholic Radio`` in Amarillo TX. Wasn`t this originally a rocker? Or
at least secular commercial until a few years ago (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** VANUATU. 11835, Aug 31 at 0627, RV still absent (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
