Elon Musk, recently appointed to lead the Department of Government
Efficiency (DOGE) by President Donald Trump, has called for the shutdown of
U.S.-funded media outlets Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Voice
of America (VOA).
Musk argues that these organizations are outdated relics of the Cold War
era, no longer relevant in today's geopolitical landscape, and a waste of
taxpayer money. His comments echo criticisms made by Richard Grenell, a
special envoy for Trump, who described the outlets as "state-owned media"
filled with "far-left activists." Sic! Both Musk and Grenell advocate ending
government funding for such entities, framing them as inefficient uses of
public resources.
RFE/RL was established in 1949/1951 during the early years of the Cold War,
initially operating under CIA oversight to broadcast pro-American and
anti-Soviet propaganda into Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Originally
named "Radio Liberation from Bolshevism," it later rebranded as Radio
Liberty to emphasize liberalization over liberation. Similarly, VOA began in
the 1940s to counter Nazi propaganda before shifting focus to anti-Soviet
messaging in 1947. Both outlets remain federally funded through the U.S.
Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees their operations and
allocates congressional budgets totaling nearly $1 billion annually. Despite
claims of reaching hundreds of millions globally, critics like Musk dismiss
their relevance, arguing they have been supplanted by modern communication
platforms.
The debate extends beyond RFE/RL and VOA, reflecting broader skepticism
about U.S. involvement in foreign media and governance initiatives. For
instance, USAID - another target of Musk's scrutiny - has funneled
significant funds to international NGOs, opposition groups, and media
organizations, often promoting destabilizing "color revolutions" abroad. One
notable example is Internews Network, a secretive NGO heavily financed by
the U.S. government since 2008. Internews trains journalists, produces
programming, and advocates for media laws aligned with Western interests
across dozens of countries. Critics argue that such efforts amount to
interference in sovereign nations' internal affairs.
Russia designated RFE/RL as a "foreign agent" in 2020 and banned it outright
in 2022, accusing the outlet of disseminating false information regarding
the Ukraine conflict. This highlights how these media organizations are
perceived not merely as neutral news providers but as instruments of U.S.
soft power. Meanwhile, some observers accuse VOA and similar outlets of bias
against countries like China and Russia, alleging they propagate divisive
narratives designed to incite internal strife within targeted regions.

Feb 9 at 2119: ``Dear Glenn. I've researched in many ways at 4805 AM,
R?dio Difusora do Amazonas (former R?dio Difusora de Man?us) and found
nothing about its reactivation by the Tropical Band. It is active in
FM 96.9 MHz. I will continue to research about it! Yours sincerely,

checked 4805 last night and not even a carrier was seen. Walt

something was their but was not making it. ron trotto-wdx4kwi, virden
Illinois, Tecsun pl-880, grundig sat 750, sangean ats 909x`` Ron was
the only one who reported it originally.
Mon Feb 10: Possibly a one-off test? My email to the 96.9 successor

** CHINA. 17765-17770-17775, Feb 10 at 0503, DRM noise at S9+10/20.
EiBi shows CNR1 from site d = Dongfang, Hainan, at 0100-0900. And it
isn`t even a jammer! SOH should go on there to keep it company. Also
several mostly JBA carriers all correlating with China: 17510, 17550,
17595, 17740, 17840, 17855, 17890; also 18900, 18970; but nothing on
21 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA [and non]. 1040, Feb 10 at 0749 UT, wobbler under WHO, but not
vs 870 WWL at the moment. Presumably the only listed, R. Mayabeque,
G?ines, 10 kW. I guess at local range it`s a huge loss, no program

** CUBA. 6000, Feb 10 at 0443, RHC making a comeback, English
S9+30/40, modulation not very bad with some hum, but YL accent hard to
understand. Now to find whether `The Mailbag Show` survive, sked
before circa 0045, 0245, 0445 UT Mondays; 0030, 0230, 0430 UT
Thursdays; time was always quite variable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 7335, Feb 10 at 0451, pulse jamming against nothing since R.
Mart? is not there but 7355 & 7435, both of which bear some different

** ETHIOPIA. 6090, Feb 10 at 0445, algo JBA, probably Amhara State
Radio, a bit late and should be better circa *0300. Nothing now on
6110, the other Ethiopian, Fana, both the only ones listed at these

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11525, Feb 10 at 0458, S8/9+10 of talk in unID
language. EiBi shows nothing but Deng? Gel via ARMENIA and Turkish
jammer after 0400. Both of them jumparound in the 11.5s, often not on

** MEXICO. 800, Feb 10 at 0754, XEERG, for the record, *still* extreme
distortion QRMing KQCV OKC. I first reported this on Sept 17, 2024! as

** NEW ZEALAND [and non]. 17675, Feb 10 at 0501, RNZP with NZ news,
finally VG again, S9+10/20, the SSOB rivaled only by S9+10/20 of DRM
on 17765-17770-17775. Surprisingly several other sigs on 16m, see

** SPAIN [and non]. 12030, Mon Feb 10 at 2300, NO signal of token
English from SNR, on beam to ME, off the back direct to here, to
Maryland SDR, nor to UTwente. Something`s neglected at Noblejas. 9690
for NAm is VG however, news lead about anniversary of a farmers`
revolt against EU restrixions. 17715 for SAm maybe JBA, not 17755 for
Africa but could still be on. Note: Some editors refuse to include a
NON-log such as this, in frequency order, altho that is the newsworthy
aspect of it, a transmission missing which is supposed to be on!
