``Cosmic Lightning
July 9, 2025 | Cosmic Rays, Earth's Atmosphere, Weather and
Atmospheric Phenomena | Physics, Science
https://stardate.org/podcast/2025-07-09?

Thunderstorms generate what may be nature?s most impressive displays:
lightning. And there?s plenty of it; lightning strikes Earth millions
of times every day.

Although lightning is common, it?s also mysterious. The electric
fields inside clouds don?t appear to be strong enough to power
lightning. So for the past 90 years, scientists have pondered whether
it might have a cosmic origin ? cosmic rays ? particles that ram into
Earth?s atmosphere at almost the speed of light. Many of them come
from the Sun. But the most powerful come from exploding stars, the gas
around black holes, and other powerful objects in deep space.

When a cosmic-ray particle hits an atom or molecule in the upper
atmosphere, it creates a shower of other particles. And it?s these
particles that might then zip through clouds, creating lightning.

A study published earlier this year seems to affirm this idea.
Scientists studied a thunderstorm over New Mexico with a sophisticated
array of radio antennas. They traced more than 300 strikes from
beginning to end, at intervals of less than a thousandth of a second.

Among other things, the radio waves revealed that the bolts weren?t
moving the way they should if they?d been sparked by the clouds
themselves. Instead, the lightning seemed to be triggered by something
coming from beyond Earth: cosmic rays.

** ITALY. 918 kHz, July 9 at 2126, -15 Hz into Noale SDR, and S9+22
signal but undermodulated, can`t be sure if it be IRRS SW via AM
Italia, and nothing on 1323 scheduled until 2300* but 918 may have
replaced it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1680 kHz, July 9 at 2010 UT, Virtual DJ Radio still
running and audible almost noise-free peaking around the intersexion
of S Van Buren and W Owen K Garriott in Enid. Is pirate relay of an
internet `station` as explained originally.

95.5 MHz, July 9 at 2015 UT, unID pirate/part 15 very weak signal with
pop music and long pauses, somewhat undermod but $tereo pilot on,
peaking around intersexion of S Cleveland and W OK Garriott in Enid,
still going, even less range than 1680 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 15520, Wed July 9 at 2200, token English from SNR, better
here and 17715 than 15520 for NAm since I am unusually checking via
UTwente, which is offbeam for all of them; also 15390 for Africa. 2207
feature after news is interview about forest fires as the season has
now begun, causes and prevention, someone in English with a heavy
accent (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.004-, July 9 at 2200, VOT English not off the air, VG
S9+50 into UTwente, pretending to open the 1230 on 17620; something`s
always awry at Ankara. 2215 long travelog feature about touring
Istanbul. By finish at 2227 it`s 11785.005+. 2250
``always-by-your-side`` promo. 2251 s/off of 1230 on 17620, awry. 2252
IS to 2253.6* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2302 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke,
Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard?s listening Post, Radio: JRC
NRD-535 HF (30 years of service),? antenna: random long wires in the
trees. World of Radio #2302, WRMI:??
9455 kHz, Static QRN, S7 signal, 2321, 2340, 2345, 2357 (45442), 2358,
July 6 UTC 2025 [Sun]
9395 kHz, empty (35442), below S5, 2359, July 8 UTC 2025 [Tue] (Lemke,
Richard -AB)``

Confirmed Tuesday July 8 at 2330 on SW Gold Radio, Germany, 3975.002+,
S9/+10 into UTwente.

Also confirmed Tuesday July 8 at 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9+10/35 into
Georgia SDR.

Also confirmed new time of UT Wednesday July 9 at 0030 on WRMI 9395.

Also confirmed Wednesday July 9 at 1931 on SW Gold Radio, Germany,
6160, VG into UTwente by recording, presumably also on 3975.?

Also confirmed Wednesday July 9 at 2120 the 2100 on WBCQ 7490 -67 Hz =
7489.933, VP S5/7 and noisy into Maryland SDR; less QRM by USB
tuning.?

I see on the WRMI skedgrid, yet another new time, to be confirmed, Wed
2330 on WRMI 9395. Yes! There I am, July 9 at 2339 check on WRMI 9395,
S9+10/20 direct . Next:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S;
1630 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 6160.

Thanks for financial support this week from Peter Robinson, Preston
UK, for a very generous contribution via PayPal, not necessarily in US
funds, to woradio at yahoo.com

One may also contribute by MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WTWW: George McClintock informs me July 9: Overcomer
Ministry has agreed to stay on WTWW, 24 hours, presumably 9930/5920,?
at 70 kW. This may be the only SW coverage. Various repairs continue,?
which hopefully will make 5085 and daytime 9475 more reliable; and he?
says WTWW is open to secular shows such as music buying time?
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WBCQ: Hal turner, the far-right talker on WBCQ has just
belatedly posted on website July 7 that he`s on 5130 instead of 6160:
https://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news-selections/world-news/temporary-frequency-change
And guess what, that is NOT the antenna HT is on, but World`s Last
Chance, only for the SuperStition on 9330. Don`t you believe Hal
Turner. Compare to this view of it;
https://www.radioworld.com/global/wbcq-relies-on-high-power-shortwave-antenna

I already noticed the change two weeks ago:
``U S A. 5129.9, June 24 at 0126 JBA signal vs HSNL must be WBCQ,
which per own websked is not on the air at all on UT Tuesday!! At 0158
I check Maryland SDR, and hear Hal Turner wrapping up with a
gold/silver commercial, whilst 6160- is off the air, but // 7490-. But
by 0200, 5130- is playing the generic WBCQ s/off. Evidently Turner has
been moved from 6160 to 5130. Why doesn`t the sked show this
correctly? Not that I care to hear him anywhere`` (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 12050, July 9 at 1435, no signal direct from WEWN Spanish
RCM; nor at 1538, 1600 into Lima SDR, which is getting Mart?. Nor at
2116 into Maryland SDR. AAMOF, haven`t noticed 12050 in some time,
random daytime and evening tunebys. Totally off? Had heard it near
start and stop of registered span 1400-0600. Now would have no CCI, as
Ndarason quit 12050, and nothing else scheduled (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
